The Rock History Reader is an eclectic compilation of readings that tells the history of rock as it has been received and explained as a social and musical practice throughout its six decade history. The readings range from the vivid autobiographical accounts of such rock icons as Ronnie Spector and David Lee Roth to the writings of noted rock critics like Lester Bangs and Chuck Klosterman. It also includes a variety of selections from media critics, musicologists, fanzine writers, legal experts, sociologists and prominent political figures. Many entries also deal specifically with distinctive styles such as Motown, punk, disco, grunge, rap and indie rock. Each entry includes headnotes, which place it in its historical context.

Serge Gainsbourg is synonymous with "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus" on which he and Jane Birkin simulated the sounds of sexual congress. But this 1969 UK no. 1 was but a sideshow in an impressive career as a composer, novelist, film director and actor. The first full biography in English, Alan Clayson's book reveals the entire sordid story. Gainsbourg was an inlikely pop star and an even less likely lover of icons like Birkin, Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve. But from humble beginnings he went on to write songs for Dionne Warwick and Sacha Distel. A natural at courting controversy, his outrages included a scandalous arrangement of "La Marseillaise" among songs on female masturbation, incest, Nazism, and, in 1988, a rapping ode to oral sex. He continued to be newsworthy the world over until his body's final rebellion at the age of 61, after a lifetime of violation.
In 1978 esteemed concert promoter Harvey Goldsmith put on the single biggest, paid one day concert in UK history at the Blackbushe Aerodrome in Surrey with some estimates putting the audience figure at around 250,000. Goldsmith still considers it the high point of his career: "The best event I've been involved in was a performance from Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton at Blackbushe Aerodrome in 1978. It was amazing to see so many people come out to enjoy The Picnic. I think there was around 200,000 people. Even to this day, there's still a buzz about the event, which is extraordinary." Bob Dylan was experiencing a renewed commercial peak and had embarked upon a year-long world tour. The European leg included six nights at London's 17,000 capacity Earl's Court in early June that sold out in hours. Due to demand Goldsmith quickly organised the outdoor show that was dubbed The Picnic At Blackbushe which concluded the European leg of the tour. The line-up was augmented with Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading and New Wave artist Graham Parker & The Rumour plus Lake and Merger. Demand was phenomenal and Dylan was reportedly paid a performance fee of one million. The largest for a single artist at that time and a staggering amount for 1978. With Dylan having not played the UK mainland for twelve years, his return to Britain was the event of the year. Anyone who was anyone made the effort to be there including New Wave artists such as John Cooper Clarke and members of the Clash and other musicians such as Ringo Starr and Barbara Dickson. Many other well-known celebrities of the day also made the trip to Blackbushe including comedian Billy Connolly, actress Jenny Agutter and Bianca Jagger.
