Bobby Denton's career was started by legendary American Bandstand icon Dick Clark. This is a story of tragedy and overcoming by the Alabama Music Hall of Fame singing star and Alabama Senator for 34 years. Bobby Denton began singing and playing the guitar at a very early age. He performed on radio and various musical events around the northwest Alabama area In 1956, a small recording company was organized and a short time later, Tune Records recorded a song called, "A Fallen Star" sung by teenager Bobby Denton. This record is believed to be the first master tape recording from which a commercial record was pressed in the state of Alabama. Although Bobby's recording of the song was the first, it was overshadowed by other artists who recorded the song who were promoted by major record companies. Bobby Denton recorded other songs for Tune Records before joining promoter Judd Phillips. Judd was the brother of Sam Phillips who discovered Elvis Presley and founded Sun Records of Memphis, Tennessee. Bobby recorded four songs for Judd Records that had nationwide distribution. He performed on the Dick Clark Show from New York City and his recordings of "Sweet and Innocent" and "Back to School" were big hits in several areas of the country. He also toured with big named stars around the nation before he left the business in 1960. After almost 40 years of being completely out of the music business, Bobby Denton returned to music in 1997. He recorded a 13-song album of old favorite gospel songs called "My God and I." In 1998, he released another gospel album called Hope, and in 1999 an album called Love Songs was released. His latest release is Amazing Grace. Bobby records and performs his music for personal satisfaction with the intent of providing his audiences with the good feeling of hope and a renewal of faith.

American Ballads - The Photographs of Marty Stuart (Hardcover): Kathryn E. Delmez American Ballads - The Photographs of Marty Stuart (Hardcover)

Although known primarily as a country music star, Marty Stuart has been taking photographs of the people and places surrounding him since he first went on tour with bluegrass performer Lester Flatt at age twelve. His inspirations to do this include his own mother, Hilda Stuart, whom he watched document their family's everyday life in Mississippi, bassist Milt Hinton's photographs of fellow jazz artists, and Edward Curtis's well-known images of Native Americans at the turn of the twentieth century. Stuart's work ranges from intimate and often candid behind-the-scenes depictions of legendary musicians, to images that capture the eccentricities of characters from the back roads of America, to dignified portraits of members of the impoverished Lakota tribe in South Dakota, a people he was introduced to through his former father-in-law, Johnny Cash. Whatever the subject, Stuart is able to sensitively tease out something unexpected or hidden beneath the surface through a skillful awareness of timing and composition as well as a unique relationship with many of the subjects based on years of friendship and trust.

This book will present images from these three bodies of work: "Badlands," on his time with the Lakota; "The Masters," from his work with musicians like Bill Monroe, Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Dolly Parton, George Jones, Kitty Wells, Willie Nelson, and Waylon Jennings; and "Blue Line Hot Shots." As Stuart explains, "The newly built Interstate Highway System was at one time represented on our maps by the color red, while the two-lane highways and back roads of the nation were represented in blue. The back roads are where you'll find some of the people that I admire, respect, and always keep an eye out for. ... They are renegades As Roger Miller once said, 'These people flush to the beat of a different plumber.' "

The photographs are framed by an introduction by Stuart and a context-setting essay by photography historian Susan Edwards, executive director of the First Center for the Visual Arts. The book and accompanying exhibition at the First Center demonstrate that Marty Stuart is a master storyteller not only through his songs but also through his revealing and compelling photographs.

Excerpt
"When I first began traveling I loved the adventure of going from town to town and exploring what each place had to offer. Whenever possible, on the day of the show I walked the streets and back roads, gathering stories and songs from local folks. I studied everything from the different kinds of architecture that surrounded me to the majesty of the sunsets and how they affected the mood of the town I was in. That first season was filled with the joy of a new musical life taking flight. The applause, the spotlight, the sparkle of the fame, the freedom of 'here today, go somewhere else tomorrow' charmed me night after night, day after day, until show business found its mark and became a way of life. I enjoyed every minute of the dance. I still love those things, but most of all it's the people that I've enjoyed along the way, namely the characters. The kind of characters who can be defined as American originals."

The story of a remarkable time and place: Los Angeles from the dawn of the singer-songwriter era in the mid-Sixties to the peak of The Eagles' success in the late Seventies. `Hotel California' is an epic tale of songs and sunshine, drugs and denim, genius and greed, and is the first in-depth account of the LA Canyons scene between 1967 and 1976. Hoskyn's history of this vital period in the development of today's great musical influences spans the rise of Joni Mitchell, Crosby Stills Nash and Young, The Eagles, James Taylor and Jackson Browne, and focuses on the brilliance and determination of David Geffen, the man who linked them all. Covering genius, drug-crazed disintegration, and the myriad relationships between these artists and the songs that issued from them, and drawing on extensive interviews with countless stars, singers, writers, managers, executives and scenesters, `Hotel California' is a pop-culture classic.

Sonic Assassin - A Life (Paperback): Paul Hayles Sonic Assassin - A Life (Paperback)
Paul Hayles

Paul Hayles biography is a fast moving story deeply embedded in the music and entertainment business. With some very famous friends, bands and tours, Paul takes us through what it was like working with the greats and living to tell the tale. Paul Hayles never wanted to be in a cult rock band like Hawkwind and yet there he was, the shy father of two setting out on a journey that would take him away from his young family and make his wildest dreams come true. Paul knew Lemmy Kilmister from way back, both had auditioned for the same band back before Hawkwind came together. Lemmy had just left Hawkwind to form Motorhead, so the band was in a changing phase and so was Paul. Playing in bands had been something Paul chose to do as a hobby to begin with - in addition to his day job of teaching children with behaviour problems. He played in a local band, Ark, and thought it was just his weekly night out away from the restraints of his daily life. But, suddenly, out of the blue, there he was playing in Sonic Assassins, Hawkwind and then on tour in the USA with the Kings of Space Rock. He made the most of it in the world of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll. They traversed America, meeting and hanging out with other bands such as Van Halen and the Blockheads, and even eating and chatting with one of his heroes, David Bowie. His life was far from what he had ever imagined. All things come to and end and Paul moved his family to France, where they rented a small farm and tried the self-sufficiency life before returning to teaching. He continued playing in bands, now with the confidence to compose and sing, and used the Hawkwind connection to get All Area Access entry to concerts by bands such as Pink Floyd and U2 and even got to play with the Topper Headon Band (ex-Clash). So his musical ambitions, although put aside for the sake of his beloved family, were still there under the surface. In the 90's, back in the UK, he returned to the world of boarding schools for extremely difficult youngsters but still played music, even touring with folk-meets-rave band The Cropdusters. But he was good at his day job and was soon promoted to Head Teacher having three such posts before a bout of cancer meant stopping this difficult work. Meantime he worked on an album with Jalal Nurinda of the Last Poets, seminal rap band, and brought out an EP with some top Bristol musicians including Roni Size's drummer, Clive Deamer. Then, out of the blue again, nearly 30 years on, he received an invitation to support Hawkwind on their 2006 British tour. Back on the road, more adventures, more chance meetings, such as Peter Hook of New Order, and would this be the end or another new beginning? Pauls band Lastwind release their new album High on Life with Flicknife Records (SHARPCD19108) on March 29th 2019.

Laurel Canyon in the '60s and early '70s was a magical place where musicians gathered to create much of the soundtrack to those times. The Doors, the Beach Boys, Frank Zappa, James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell and more lived and jammed together here. But the scene had a dark side. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery. Far more integrated into the scene than most would like to admit was Charles Manson and his infamous Family. It also seems these colourful characters all coexisted alongside a covert military installation.

No European jazz musician has so enchanted the word as Django Reinhardt, the gypsy guitarist whose recording with Stephane Grappelly and the Hot Club of France have meant "The Thirties" to several generations of listeners, influencing musicians as far afield as Larry Coryell, Leon Redbone, Eddy Lang, and Charlie Christian. This is the only full-length study of Django ever published in English, an unforgettable portrait of a wild and independent figure who never learned to read or write (friends forged his autographs), exasperated those people who lived by schedules, gambled away a week's salary in a night, but who played the guitar like no one before or since. The distinguished French critic Charles Delaunay, who knows more about Django than anyone alive, here provides not only the familiar outline of a life- the childhood travels in gypsy caravans, the fire that left Django with a crippled hand, the legendary temper and generosity- but he also collected scores of anecdotes about the sensitivity and musical gifts that were the basis for Django's appearance as a character in Jean Cocteau's Les Enfants Terribles. Who else but Django could charm his way out of a jail sentence by serenading the police officer with his guitar? The comprehensive discography at the back of the book completes Delaunay's picture of this "misrepresented and fantastic creature, at once so captivating and so divorced from the contentions of his age."

A Shot in the Dark - Making Records in Nashville, 1945-1955 (Hardcover): Martin Hawkins A Shot in the Dark - Making Records in Nashville, 1945-1955 (Hardcover)
Martin Hawkins

With a "Soundtrack" CD

Before Elvis hit town, back before country music was synonymous with Nashville, a small group of intrepid entrepreneurs--local businessmen looking to make a buck and have some fun--were recording and selling all the local music they could find. From dance bands to gospel, from rhythm & blues to, yes, country music, these men inadvertently documented a wealth of local music as they struggled to run successful recording studios.

Hawkins goes beyond the music to tell the stories of the behind-the-scenes folks responsible for turning Nashville into Music City U.S.A. From Jim Bulleit, who was there at the very beginnings of the music industry, to Bill Beasley, who took on the emerging Music Row 'establishment' and lost, Hawkins guides us through the careers of the folks who defined Nashville's music scene for an exciting, unpredictable decade and traces the rise and fall of local music labels like Bullet, World, Tennessee, Republic and Speed.

Though the focus of the book is on the recording companies, studios, DJs and other music promoters, it also underlines the importance of some of the giants of Nashville music--like Francis Craig, who recorded an international hit by accident, Owen Bradley, who had a hand in many early labels, Del Wood, the surprise star of honky tonk piano, the fabulous blues singer Christine Kittrell, the underrated R&B bandleader Louis Brooks, the ubiquitous gospel promoter, Wally Fowler, the long-established Fairfield Four, and the king of the rude country song, Randy Hughes.

This book builds off of and develops more fully the research Hawkins did for the critically acclaimed Bear Family Records box collections of Nashville recordings during this same time. Full of lush photographs, many being published here for the first time, and accompanied by a twenty-song CD highlighting the wide range of music being made in Nashville at the time, the book immerses readers in the sights, sounds, and stories of this vibrant and influential decade in Nashville music making.

Founded on rock music, celebrity, boom-time economics and fleeting political optimism - this was 'Cool Britannia'. Records sold in their millions, a new celebrity elite emerged and Tony Blair's Labour Party found itself, at long last, returned to government. Like the cowboy, the idea of the rock star lives on in our imaginations. What did we see in them? Swagger. Recklessness. Sexual charisma. Damn-the-torpedoes self-belief. A certain way of carrying themselves. Good hair. Interesting shoes. Talent we wished we had. What did we want of them? To be larger than life but also like us. To live out their songs. To stay young forever. No wonder many didn't stay the course. In Uncommon People, David Hepworth zeroes in on defining moments and turning points in the lives of forty rock stars from 1955 to 1995, taking us on a journey to burst a hundred myths and create a hundred more. Drawing on the collections of the V&A, Glam Rock narrates the story of glam and explores its impact on fashion, theatre and film. In the early 1970s, glam rock changed the face of popular culture in Britain and, against a backdrop of a nation racked by economical and social crises, its flamboyancy and theatricality provided an excuse for a party and an escapist dream for musicians and fans alike. British acts like David Bowie, Roxy Music, T. Rex and Mott the Hoople - together with American fellow-travellers including Lou Reed, Alice Cooper and Sparks - drew on the original blueprint of rock and roll, as well as a host of other traditions, from Hollywood to the music hall, Berlin cabaret and Broadway musicals to science fiction and pop art. The resulting music was a wild blend of camp artifice and avant-garde decadence. By 1975 the era had come to an end, but glam never truly went away. Indeed, its attitudes and aesthetics have shaped much that has followed since, from disco to punk, the new romantics to Britpop, Prince to Lady Gaga.
