This book gathers selected papers from the Hong Kong Association for Educational Communications and Technology 2019 International Conference on the theme of "Shaping the Future of Education, Communication and Technology." It contributes to a scholarly discussion that looks beyond what future media and technology can offer for education, and reflects on best practices and lessons learned from applying new media and technology in a wide range of fields. Scholars from educational technology, communication, and higher education share their research work in various formats such as empirical research, best-practice case studies, literature reviews, etc. The topics of the papers are divided into four main areas, including curriculum, pedagogy and instructional design; teaching and learning experiences with technology; online learning and open education resources; and communication and media. The book's unique quality is its combination of perspectives and research work on communication, education and technology. Thus, it will encourage an interdisciplinary discourse and exchange concerning communication, new media, and educational practices.

Towards Discursive Education - Philosophy, Technology, and Modern Education (Paperback): Christina E. Erneling Towards Discursive Education - Philosophy, Technology, and Modern Education (Paperback)
Christina E. Erneling
R555 Discovery Miles 5 550 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

As technology continues to advance, the use of computers and the Internet in educational environments has immensely increased. But just how effective has their use been in enhancing children's learning? In this thought-provoking book, Christina E. Erneling conducts a thorough investigation of scholarly journal articles on how computers and the Internet affect learning. She critiques the influential pedagogical theories informing the use of computers in schools - in particular those of Jean Piaget and 'theory of mind' psychology. Erneling introduces and argues for a discursive approach to learning based on the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein and the psychology of Lev Vygotsky. This book not only addresses an urgent pedagogical problem in depth, but also challenges dominant assumptions about learning in both developmental psychology and cognitive science.

Universities for years have been the bright spot in our educational system. Today, these institutions are under siege from multiple constituencies including students, parents, legislators, government officials and their own faculties. Education has historically been a way for students to improve their lives and fortunes. However, the rising costs of college are a barrier to access for many students, reducing their chances for upward mobility. Is technology the solution, or is it just another costly problem for universities? The purpose of this book is to explore how new technology has the potential to transform higher education. However, this same technology also has the potential to disrupt universities. Much depends on how administrators, faculty and students apply technologically enhanced learning.Technology and the Disruption of Higher Education presents details on MOOCs, blended, flipped and online classes and their role in transforming higher education based on the author's experiences teaching all of these types of courses. These technology-enabled approaches to teaching and learning offer tremendous opportunities to schools, but they also threaten the traditional university. The book identifies some of these threats and opportunities and offers suggested strategies to take advantage of the technology. Is this technology enough to save the university system? While new ways of teaching and learning are exciting, they are only part of the puzzle. Radical change beyond what happens in the classroom is needed if our higher education system is to continue to flourish and some of these ideas are discussed in the last chapter of the book. The book is a call to action for educators to realize that the technology is both transformational and disruptive, and that some universities are going to fail in the next 15 years.

This work considers the potential of photographs for orienting in a critical direction the scope, questions and interests of the disciplinary conventions of the field of educational inquiry. Visual objects may help illuminate broader socio-historical events and logics that are deeply entwined with education yet remain marginal to or "outside" of what constitutes its domain of study. In this work photographic images are treated as resources for re-visioning the founding disciplinary objects of educational studies by reorienting its proper objects of study, traditional archives, persistent categories, frames of reference, and accepted portals of research and inquiry. A theoretic framing shapes the question taken up in this work, "How might an engagement with photo-archives open new horizons in the study of education from a postfoundationalist, multi-theoretic and cross-disciplinary perspective?" The author constructs a rather unconventional vantage point to explore this question that opens on to the discursive spaces of three photographs made of three women in the years 1897, 1949, and 1966. The photographs are analysed from three theoretic approaches. First, it is indicated how each photographic image not only marks a relationship to the past, the present, and the future but to the rules and conventions of photographic practices. These particular images give an account of what both persists and exceeds the photographic image, and permit to rewrite the bodies and lives pictured. Second, the subject matter of each photographic image while singular and local bears witness to the complex network of racial, patriarchal and colonial logics and their profound imbrication with a "technically mediated inscription." For all their singularity the photographs cannot but evoke their relation to the deeply historical character of photography. Finally, the photographs make possible an account of broader occurrences, subterranean histories, contexts, and differently situated experiences that illuminate, much like the principle of montage, a sequence of overlapping events crosscutting with one another consequently throwing open the possibility of responding to and transforming the histories and archives we are given. This book 'Pedagogies of the Image' is a winner of the 2017 American Educational Studies Association Critics' Choice Award

Robert Vanderplank
R564 Discovery Miles 5 640 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

This book brings together current thinking on informal language learning and the findings of over 30 years of research on captions (same language subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing) to present a new model of language learning from captioned viewing and a future roadmap for research and practice in this field. Language learners may have normal hearing but they are `hard-of-listening' and find it difficult to follow the rapid or unclear speech in many films and TV programmes. Vanderplank considers whether watching with captions not only enables learners to understand and enjoy foreign language television and films but also helps them to improve their foreign language skills. Captioned Media in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching will be of interest to students and researchers involved in second language acquisition teaching and research, as well as practising language teachers and teacher trainers.

This book analyses the classroom blending of face-to-face and online technologies in the teaching and learning of second languages. Its theoretical framework integrates the rapidly changing and developing fields of both applied linguistics and computer-assisted language learning (CALL). It examines such themes as the normalization of the computer and the rise of mobile devices, the development of open educational resources, flipped learning, gamification, and the increased focus on communication and problem-solving tasks in class. The author illustrates how the design or `bricolage' of blended learning is part of a radical shift in our conceptualisation of the learning environment. Building on the framework established in its first edition, this book will appeal to teachers-in-training, scholars and practitioners of second language education.

This book addresses the topic of hyperconnectivity by building on, expanding, and critically examining issues that have to do with information communication technology (ICT) and networked societies. The book explores questions relating to attention and consciousness, techno-capitalism and communicative action taking. Adopting different philosophical angles to assess the challenges we face due to our entanglement with hyperconnected technologies, the book studies performance and performativity in a digitised world by considering the unfolding of our onlife and by looking at what this means to educated future scientists and engineers in a hyperconnected world. The book further discusses digital activities as the new constructs of ourselves and poses questions about how much literacy is needed for us not to be enslaved by those constructs. The book also explores the challenges of hyperconnectivity and the health sector to showcase the vulnerabilities we are increasingly exposed to. It makes clear that - since the boundaries between on- and offline are becoming increasingly blurred - we will require new, flexible frameworks that reconsider what it means to be human in a hyperconnected world.

The FPeLearning System for Education is a student-based creative technology-enhanced educational strategy that addresses all the aforementioned requisites and also encourages forums for critique, aids in the creation of potential digital repositories of knowledge, and may inspire portfolios of presentations designed by the students themselves. "The FPeLearning System for Education: Systematic Research on Creative Technology Integration into Classroom Practice" provides a conceptual overview and developmental "how-to" architecture on this dynamic approach to integrating educational technology into classroom practices. By harnessing the creativity of students, the FPeLearning Systems' design makes use of student-based practices considered beneficial to performance outcomes while promoting skill-sets deemed necessary to potential careers and continuing education. Empowering students with his or her own learning as well as developing necessary skill-sets technologically may represent the paradigm shift that education seeks to fully integrate technology at a student-centric level. The FPeLearning System for education binds education to a "Technological Constructivist" (making mean from technology) method that may provide the proverbial missing link for education when technology is the lens for development.

The ebook version of this title is Open Access, thanks to Knowledge Unlatched funding, and is freely available to read online. This book presents how young children's current practices when playing with tablets inform digital experiences in Denmark and Japan. Through an interdisciplinary lens and a grounded theory approach, Froes identifies and maps these practices, which compose the taxonomy of tablet play and proposes a series of theoretical concepts that complement recent theories related to play and digital literacy studies. Tablet devices bring with them not only a multitude of options, but they also help create notions of digital space and environments defining emerging territories in young children's play experiences. Young children play with these devices and have fun indulging in digital worlds, while discovering and problem-solving with a variety of narratives and interfaces encountered on these digital playgrounds. A set of tablet play characteristics, such as multimodal applications (apps) combined with tablets' physical and digital affordances shape children's digital play. The data collected through observations informed some noteworthy aspects, including how children's hands gain and perform an embodied knowledge of digital spaces. This embodied knowledge develops through digital play interactions, defining what is proposed as digital penmanship. Complementary to the penmanship, several symbols and a range of modes of use shape a rich multimodal semiotic vocabulary in children's digital play experiences. These early digital experiences set the rules for the playgrounds and assert digital tablets as twenty-first-century toys, shaping young children's playful literacy.

Everything you always wanted to know about MOOCs: an account of massive open online courses and what they might mean for the future of higher education. The New York Times declared 2012 to be "The Year of the MOOC" as millions of students enrolled in massive open online courses (known as MOOCs), millions of investment dollars flowed to the companies making them, and the media declared MOOCs to be earth-shaking game-changers in higher education. During the inevitable backlash that followed, critics highlighted MOOCs' high dropout rate, the low chance of earning back initial investments, and the potential for any earth-shaking game change to make things worse instead of better. In this volume in the Essential Knowledge series, Jonathan Haber offers an account of MOOCs that avoids both hype and doomsaying. Instead, he provides an engaging, straightforward explanation of a rare phenomenon: an education innovation that captures the imagination of the public while moving at the speed of an Internet startup. Haber explains the origins of MOOCs, what they consist of, the controversies surrounding them, and their possible future role in education. He proposes a new definition of MOOCs based on the culture of experimentation from which they emerged, and adds a student perspective-missing in most MOOC discussion. Haber's unique Degree of Freedom experiment, during which he attempted to learn the equivalent of a four-year liberal arts degree in one year using only MOOCs and other forms of free education, informs his discussion. Haber urges us to avoid the fallacy of thinking that because MOOCs cannot solve all educational challenges they are not worth pursuing, and he helps us understand what MOOCs-despite their limitations-still offer the world. His book is required reading for anyone trying to sort out the competing claims, aspirations, and accusations that color the MOOC debate.

What do young people really do with digital media? Young People's Literacies in the Digital Age aims to debunk the common myths and assumptions that are associated with young people's relationship with digital media. In contrast to widespread notions of the empowered and enabled 'digital native', the book presents a more complex picture of young people's digital lives. Focusing on the notion of 'critical digital literacies' this book tackles a number of pressing questions that are often ignored in media hype and political panics over young people's digital media use, including: In what ways can digital media enhance, shape or constrain identity representation and communication? How do digital experiences map onto young people's everyday lives? What are young people's critical understandings of digital media and how did they develop these? What are the dominant understandings young people have of digital media and in whose interests do they work? These questions are addressed through the findings of a year of fieldwork with groups of young people aged 14 to 19 years. Over the course of eight chapters, the experiences and views of these young people are explored with reference to various academic literatures, such as digital literacies, media and communication studies, critical theory and youth studies. Starting with their early socialisation into the digital context, the book traces the continuities, contradictions and conflicts they encounter as part of their practices. Written in a detailed but accessible manner, this book develops a unique perspective on young people's digital lives.

With the technical advancement of digital media and the medium of communication in recent years, there is a widespread interest in digital entertainment. An emerging te- nical research area edutainment, or educational entertainment, has been accepted as education using digital entertainment. Edutainment has been recognized as an eff- tive way of learning using modern digital media tools, like computers, games, mobile phones, televisions, or other virtual reality applications, which emphasizes the use of entertainment with application to the education domain. The Edutainment conference series was established in 2006 and subsequently - ganized as a special event for researchers working in this new interest area of e-learning and digital entertainment. The main purpose of Edutainment conferences is to facilitate the discussion, presentation, and information exchange of the scientific and technological development in the new community. The Edutainment conference series becomes a valuable opportunity for researchers, engineers, and graduate s- dents to communicate at these international annual events. The conference series - cludes plenary invited talks, workshops, tutorials, paper presentation tracks, and panel discussions.
