The Vital Psoas Muscle presents an in-depth look at the most important yet abused skeletal muscle in the human body. Located deep within the front hip joint and lower spine, the psoas is critical for optimal postural alignment, movement, and overall well being. Its function and importance extend beyond anatomical mechanics to the nerve complex and energy systems. Taking a uniquely holistic approach, this book explores how the psoas affects the health of the body, mind, and spirit: Physically, as the only muscle that connects the upper and lower body Emotionally, as a messenger to and from the brain and a vessel of deeply rooted feelings Spiritually, as an integrator within the root of the lower chakras, subtly affecting the flow of life energy throughout the body Understanding and working with the psoas can help: Alleviate lower back pain Strengthen the core Correct posture Reduce trauma Open energy channels No matter our level of fitness or flexibility, how we use the psoas and take care of it is crucial to our life experience. With detailed illustrations and key stretching and strengthening exercises, including complete chapters on the role of the psoas in Pilates and yoga, The Vital Psoas shows readers how to release this muscle to create balance, harmony, and freedom of movement.
Exercise has long been touted anecdotally as an effective tool to raise spirits or reduce tension, but only recently has rigorous science caught up with these claims. Now there is overwhelming evidence that regular exercise can help relieve everything from common feelings of stress and anxiety to full-blown depression. With Exercise for Mood and Anxiety, well-known authorities Michael Otto and Jasper Smits bring their clinically tested exercise program to the general public. Written for those who need a more effective way to manage everyday low mood and stress-as well as those diagnosed with more serious mood disorders-this book provides readers with step-by-step guidance on how to start and maintain an exercise program geared towards improving mood. Equally important, the book sheds much light on the all-important issue of motivation. Most Americans quickly fall off the exercise wagon. This book helps demystify the traps of good intentions and the pitfalls that derail exercise attempts. How can you get yourself to exercise when you are tired, distracted, or stressed? What should you pay attention to during a walk or a run? How should you prepare yourself so that getting out for a run is not harder than the run itself? In answering these questions, the authors not only provide readers with effective strategies for adopting a successful program, but also introduce the principles that will help them keep with the program for the long haul. Providing rich examples and practical advice on overcoming the obstacles to a regular exercise program, Exercise for Mood and Anxiety will help readers feel happier and less stressed now-and, as they stay with this program, improve their fitness and health in the future.

Do you suffer from back pain that radiates out into your legs? You are not alone. Traditionally, doctors automatically suspect a slipped disc but intervertebral discs aren't always to blame. In many cases, there is an infection in the piriformis that presses on the sciatic nerve, which is causing the pain. If piriformis syndrome is recognised early, it can be much more precisely and effectively treated than, for instance, a slipped disc. Even simple stretching exercises have proven astonishingly effective. Sports editor Nicolai Napolski, who knows from his own experience how painful piriformis syndrome can be, has collaborated with sports therapist and personal trainer Katharina Brinkmann to write the first guidebook covering this condition in a clear and concise manner. Not only have the authors collected the most important information regarding the background and development of piriformis syndrome, but they have also created their very own training regime that introduces simple and effective techniques which can be used to stretch the shortened muscles, strengthen the pelvic girdle, and correct posture problems. In the expert interview with Dr. Torsten Pfitzer, an osteopath and spine specialist, you can also find out how you can prevent the condition, so that the pain doesn't occur in the first place.

Whilst this second edition has the same page count as the first, the book has been revised to bring it completely up to date. In addition to dozens of minor revisions there are also some valuable major changes. Chapter 17, the 50 page chapter at the heart of the book, has been entirely rewritten to reflect the authors six extra years of additional experience and research. This chapter has a totally different approach, teaching readers how to design their own programs. They are given all the tools and understanding they need in order to be able to put the individual pieces together in custom program designs for each person. Chapter 19 has likewise been rewritten as it relates directly to Chapter 17. Several of the most important sections in Chapter 12, detailing the exercise technique, have also been completely revised. Additionally, I made many changes to various sections throughout the book. In all, about 100 pages were changed. Although the first edition may have been the most complete single book on how people with normal genetics and busy lives can transform their bodies without drugs, the second edition is even better. It will make readers into their own expert personal trainers. This definitive guide is for men and women of all ages. And it's for you if you're a beginner or even if you have years of training experience. You will learn: How to train -- a step-by-step program of just two or three workouts a week; How to master exercise technique -- the most complete descriptions on the market; How to avoid new injuries, and heal old injuries -- a new approach; How to build a stronger heart from just 30 minutes of cardio work per week; How to eat for training success, and health benefits; How to lose bodyfat -- an effective, practical, proven method.

An illustrated manual for using physical movement and alignment to resolve chronic pain and tension and work with the emotions * Includes 62 exercises to work with emotions through the body and support the neck, shoulders, lower back, feet, and overall posture as well as breathing and voice * Draws on Zen shiatsu, Rolfing, yoga, and Gestalt psychotherapy to explain how transformation of physical structure corrects imbalances in the unconscious mind * " Cathy Thompson had the rarest combination of experience, knowledge, and pure instinct. I only had to walk in the door for her to understand where I was at physically, and emotionally. And the results were as unorthodox and surprising as her methods. She was one of a kind." - Hugh Jackman, actor and producer. * "Cathy's extraordinary gift began in her brain, traveled to her heart and continued through the tips of her fingers." - Kathie Lee Gifford, TV personality and author. In this practical manual, Thompson and her protege-daughter Tara Thompson Lewis provide a deep understanding of body mechanics and how to work with emotions through the body. They explore how to listen to the body's signals to discover our physical and emotional blindspots--the weaknesses and misalignments at the root of our discomfort--and explain how transformation of your physical structure can correct imbalances in the unconscious mind caused by repressed memories and emotional traumas. Offering illustrated instructions for 62 corrective alignment exercises, the authors show how to work with the deep postural muscles, and support the neck, shoulders, lower back, and feet to improve singing, dancing, yoga, and posture while sitting at the computer. By recognizing and releasing the deeper emotional triggers beneath our physical complaints, the Thompson Method allows you to resolve chronic pains, increase body awareness and free movement, and create the foundation for good health and well-being.
