Co-conspirator for Justice - The Revolutionary Life of Dr. Alan Berkman (Hardcover): Susan M. Reverby Co-conspirator for Justice - The Revolutionary Life of Dr. Alan Berkman (Hardcover)
Susan M. Reverby

Alan Berkman (1945-2009) was no campus radical in the mid-1960s; he was a promising Ivy League student, football player, Eagle Scout, and fraternity president. But when he was a medical student and doctor, his politics began to change, and soon he was providing covert care to members of revolutionary groups like the Weather Underground and becoming increasingly radicalized by his experiences at the Wounded Knee massacre, at the Attica Prison uprising, and at health clinics for the poor. When the government went after him, he went underground and participated in bombings of government buildings. He was eventually captured and served eight years in some of America's worst penitentiaries, barely surviving two rounds of cancer. After his release in 1992, he returned to medical practice and became an HIV/AIDS physician, teacher, and global health activist. In the final years of his life, he successfully worked to change U.S. policy, making AIDS treatment more widely available in the global south and saving millions of lives around the world. Using Berkman's unfinished prison memoir, FBI records, letters, and hundreds of interviews, Susan M. Reverby sheds fascinating light on questions of political violence and revolutionary zeal in her account of Berkman's extraordinary transformation from doctor to co-conspirator for justice.

When Dr Kate McGarry was diagnosed with an advanced cancer of unknown origin she resolved to write a book to chart her experience: as a woman coming to terms with such devastating news and what this meant to her as a wife and a mother but also, crucially, how she experienced cancer and its treatment as a doctor, who had become a patient. As Kate adjusted to living with cancer and underwent treatment, she enlisted the help of her husband, fellow doctor, Finbar to help her write the book but then she sadly passed away on the 5 January 2018. With no writing experience, and wrestling with his own heartache, Finbar set about finishing their story. The result is a touchingly beautiful memoir about love, grief and togetherness.

In this "artful, unfailingly human, and understandable" (Boston Globe) account inspired by his own experiences becoming a doctor, Terrence Holt puts readers on the front lines of the harrowing crucible of a medical residency. A medical classic in the making, hailed by critics as capturing "the feelings of a young doctor's three-year hospital residency . . . better than anything else I have ever read" (Susan Okie, Washington Post), Holt brings a writer's touch and a doctor's eye to nine unforgettable stories where the intricacies of modern medicine confront the mysteries of the human spirit. Internal Medicine captures the "stark moments of success and failure, pride and shame, courage and cowardice, self-reflection and obtuse blindness that mark the years of clinical training" (Jerome Groopman, New York Review of Books), portraying not only a doctor's struggle with sickness and suffering but also the fears and frailties each of us-doctor and patient-bring to the bedside.

Close to Where the Heart Gives Out - A Year in the Life of an Orkney Doctor (Paperback): Malcolm Alexander Close to Where the Heart Gives Out - A Year in the Life of an Orkney Doctor (Paperback)
Malcolm Alexander 1
R266 R194 Discovery Miles 1 940 Save R72 (27%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

An immensely heart-warming story of life on the frontline within extreme circumstances. 'Malcolm Alexander is to GPs what James Herriot is to vets' - Matt Gaw 'An ode to island life in all its glorious foibles' - The Herald In his forties, Malcolm gave up his job in suburban Glasgow when a persistent seed that had been growing inside him started to bloom, disrupting the foundations of his life. When he saw the job advert, 'urgent: island doctor needed', he applied immediately. What he didn't anticipate was how much Orkney would affect his family, for better or worse. In stories that range from the humorous to the deeply moving, Malcolm describes what it's like adjusting to life without modern conveniences and to the extreme - and constantly changing - weather; and what it means to be providing the best medical care to the local population with limited resources. Which often includes the wildlife as well ... Malcolm's journey evokes the awe that the Orkney landscape can inspire, as well as the challenges of island life and the demons that the dark, cold winter months can give birth to. Gripping and beautifully written, Close to Where the Heart Gives Out reminds us of the importance of listening to our heart, as well as to the rhythms of the landscape.

Seven Signs of Life is Abbey’s extraordinary account of what it means to be alive and how it feels to care for a living.
