This book describes the current state of the art in cryogenic safety best practice, helping the reader to work with cryogenic systems and materials safely. It brings together information from previous texts, industrial and laboratory safety polices, and recent research papers. Case studies, example problems, and an extensive list of references are included to add to the utility of the text. It describes the unique safety hazards posed by cryogenics in all its guises, including issues associated with the extreme cold of cryogenics, the flammability of some cryogenic fluids, the displacement of oxygen by inert gases boiling off from cryogenic fluids, and the high pressures that can be formed during the volume expansion that occurs when a cryogenic fluid becomes a room temperature gas. A further chapter considers the challenges arising from the behavior of materials at cryogenic temperatures. Many materials are inappropriate for use in cryogenics and can fail, resulting in hazardous conditions. Despite these hazards, work at cryogenic temperatures can be performed safely. The book also discusses broader safety issues such as hazard analysis, establishment of a safe work culture and lessons learned from cryogenic safety in accelerator labs. This book is designed to be useful to everyone affected by cryogenic hazards regardless of their expertise in cryogenics.

A pioneering exploration of olfaction that upsets settled notions of how the brain translates sensory information. Decades of cognition research have shown that external stimuli "spark" neural patterns in particular regions of the brain. This has fostered a view of the brain as a space that we can map: here the brain responds to faces, there it perceives a sensation in your left hand. But it turns out that the sense of smell-only recently attracting broader attention in neuroscience-doesn't work this way. A. S. Barwich asks a deceptively simple question: What does the nose tell the brain, and how does the brain understand it? Barwich interviews experts in neuroscience, psychology, chemistry, and perfumery in an effort to understand the biological mechanics and myriad meanings of odors. She argues that it is time to stop recycling ideas based on the paradigm of vision for the olfactory system. Scents are often fickle and boundless in comparison with visual images, and they do not line up with well-defined neural regions. Although olfaction remains a puzzle, Barwich proposes that what we know suggests the brain acts not only like a map but also as a measuring device, one that senses and processes simple and complex odors. Accounting for the sense of smell upsets theories of perception philosophers have developed. In their place, Smellosophy articulates a new model for understanding how the brain represents sensory information.

Dmitrii Mendeleev (1834-1907) is a name we recognize, but perhaps only as the creator of the periodic table of elements. Generally, little else has been known about him. A Well-Ordered Thing is an authoritative biography of Mendeleev that draws a multifaceted portrait of his life for the first time. As Michael Gordin reveals, Mendeleev was not only a luminary in the history of science, he was also an astonishingly wide-ranging political and cultural figure. From his attack on Spiritualism to his failed voyage to the Arctic and his near-mythical hot-air balloon trip, this is the story of an extraordinary maverick. The ideals that shaped his work outside science also led Mendeleev to order the elements and, eventually, to engineer one of the most fascinating scientific developments of the nineteenth century. A Well-Ordered Thing is a classic work that tells the story of one of the world's most important minds.

It is now possible to enter a chemistry degree course at many UK
universities without any formal maths training beyond age 16.
Addressing this deficiency requires students to take additional
mathematics training when entering university, yet the relevance of
maths to chemistry is often poorly appreciated by chemistry
students. In addition, many service courses are either too
abstract, or aimed at physicists and engineers, for students of
chemistry, who are not inclined to study mathematical techniques
"per se and "do not make the connection between the maths they are
taught and the chemistry they want to study.
Based on the successful "at a Glance" approach, with integrated double page presentations explaining the mathematics required by undergraduate students of chemistry, set in context by detailed chemical examples, this book will be indispensable to all students of chemistry. By bringing the material together in this way the student is shown how to apply the maths and how it relates to familiar concepts in chemistry. By including problems (with answers) on each presentation, the student is encouraged to practice both the mathematical manipulations and the application to problems in chemistry. More detailed chemical problems at the end of each topic illustrate the range of chemistry to which the maths is relevant and help the student acquire sufficient confidence to apply it when necessary.

The alarming level of greenhouse gases in the environment, fast depleting natural resources and the increasing level of industrial effluents, have made every single manufacturing activity come under the scrutiny of sustainability. When all kinds of waste such as clothes, furniture, carpets, televisions, shoes, paper, food wastes etc. end up in the landfill, only a few of them are naturally decomposed and thus a large majority remains as non-biodegradable. It is for this reason, efforts are concentrated to reduce the burden on earth by this waste, and as far as used textile products are concerned, there are now attempts to recycle or up-cycle. This book addresses the role of sustainability by using textile waste in fashion and textiles with respect to manufacturing, materials, as well as the economic and business challenges and opportunities it poses. This wide-ranging book comprises 19 chapters on the various topics including: - Solutions for sustainable fashion and textile industry - Agro and bio waste in the fashion industry - Innovating fashion brands by using textile waste - Waste in handloom textiles - Business paradigm shifting: 21st century fashion from recycling and upcycling - Utilization of natural waste for sustainable textile coloration - Circular economy in fashion and textile from waste - Future pathways of waste utilization for fashion - Sustainable encapsulation of natural dyes from Plant waste for textiles - Agro-waste applications for bio-remediation of textile effluent
Volume 82 describe reactions that involve one of the most common transformations in organic chemistry, namely, the pairwise combination of double bonded functional groups. The importance of this enormous family of reactions is a reflection of the spectacular diversity of precursors and products that can arise from appropriate modulation of reactivity of the partners and especially selection of reagents that dictate the outcome. The first chapter authored by Takeshi Takeda and Akira Tsubouchi describes the combination of carbonyl compounds in the presence of highly reactive, low valent titanium reagents in the classic McMurry reaction. The second chapter concerns the chemistry of highly-reactive, double-bonded functional groups, namely ketenes.
A multidisciplinary reference of engineering measurement tools, techniques, and applications "When you can measure what you are speaking about, and express it in numbers, you know something about it; but when you cannot measure it, when you cannot express it in numbers, your knowledge is of a meager and unsatisfactory kind; it may be the beginning of knowledge, but you have scarcely in your thoughts advanced to the stage of science." Lord Kelvin Measurement is at the heart of any engineering and scientific discipline and job function. Whether engineers and scientists are attempting to state requirements quantitatively and demonstrate compliance; to track progress and predict results; or to analyze costs and benefits, they must use the right tools and techniques to produce meaningful data. The Handbook of Measurement in Science and Engineering is the most comprehensive, up-to-date reference set on engineering and scientific measurements beyond anything on the market today. Encyclopedic in scope, Volume 3 covers measurements in physics, electrical engineering and chemistry: * Laser Measurement Techniques * Magnetic Force Images using Capacitive Coupling Effect * Scanning Tunneling Microscopy * Measurement of Light and Color * The Detection and Measurement of Ionizing Radiation * Measuring Time and Comparing Clocks * Laboratory-Based Gravity Measurement * Cryogenic Measurements * Temperature-Dependent Fluorescence Measurements * Voltage and Current Transducers for Power Systems * Electric Power and Energy Measurement * Chemometrics for the Engineering and Measurement Sciences * Liquid Chromatography * Mass Spectroscopy Measurements of Nitrotyrosine-Containing Proteins * Fluorescence Spectroscopy * X-Ray Absorption Spectroscopy * Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Spectroscopy * Near Infrared (NIR) Spectroscopy * Nanomaterials Properties * Chemical Sensing Vital for engineers, scientists, and technical managers in industry and government, Handbook of Measurement in Science and Engineering will also prove ideal for academics and researchers at universities and laboratories.
This book is dedicated to the description and application of various different theoretical models to identify the near and mid-infrared spectra of symmetric and spherical top molecules in their gaseous form. Theoretical models based on the use of group theory are applied to rigid and non-rigid molecules, characterized by the phenomenon of tunneling and large amplitude motions. The calculation of vibration-rotation energy levels and the analysis of infrared transitions are applied to molecules of ammonia (NH3) and methane (CH4). The applications show how interactions at the molecular scale modify the near and mid-infrared spectra of isolated molecules, under the influence of the pressure of a nano-cage (the substitution site of a rare gas matrix, clathrate, fullerene or zeolite) or a surface, and allow us to identify the characteristics of the perturbing environment. This book provides valuable support for teachers and researchers but is also intended for engineering students, working research engineers and MasterAs and doctorate students.
