Delicious - The Evolution of Flavor and How It Made Us Human (Hardcover): Rob Dunn, Monica Sanchez Delicious - The Evolution of Flavor and How It Made Us Human (Hardcover)
Rob Dunn, Monica Sanchez
R461 Discovery Miles 4 610 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

A savory account of how the pursuit of delicious foods shaped human evolution Nature, it has been said, invites us to eat by appetite and rewards by flavor. But what exactly are flavors? Why are some so pleasing while others are not? Delicious is a supremely entertaining foray into the heart of such questions. With generous helpings of warmth and wit, Rob Dunn and Monica Sanchez offer bold new perspectives on why food is enjoyable and how the pursuit of delicious flavors has guided the course of human history. They consider the role that flavor may have played in the invention of the first tools, the extinction of giant mammals, the evolution of the world's most delicious and fatty fruits, the creation of beer, and our own sociality. Along the way, you will learn about the taste receptors you didn't even know you had, the best way to ferment a mastodon, the relationship between Paleolithic art and cheese, and much more. Blending irresistible storytelling with the latest science, Delicious is a deep history of flavor that will transform the way you think about human evolution and the gustatory pleasures of the foods we eat.

Social Policy - A Critical and Intersectional Analysis (Paperback): Fiona Williams Social Policy - A Critical and Intersectional Analysis (Paperback)
Fiona Williams
R519 Discovery Miles 5 190 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Welfare states face profound challenges. Widening economic and social inequalities have been intensified by austerity politics, sharpened by the rise in ethno-nationalism and exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. At the same time, recent decades have seen a resurgence of social justice activism at both the local and the transnational level. Yet the transformative power of feminist, anti-racist and postcolonial/decolonial thinking has become relatively marginal to core social policy theory, while other critical approaches - around disability, sexuality, migration, age and the environment - have found recognition only selectively. This book provides a much needed new analysis of this complex landscape, drawing together critical approaches in social policy with intersectionality and political economy. Fiona Williams contextualizes contemporary social policies not only in the global crisis of finance capitalism but also in the interconnected global crises of care, ecology and racialized borders. These shape and are shaped at national scale by the intersecting dynamics of family, nation, work and nature. Through critical assessment of these realities, the book probes the ethical, prefigurative and transformative possibilities for a future welfare commons. This significant intervention will animate social policy thinking, teaching and research. It will be essential reading for anyone wanting to understand the complexities of social policy for the years ahead.

Jack Challoner
R135 R108 Discovery Miles 1 080 Save R27 (20%) Ships in 5 - 10 working days

Everything in the universe is made up of the elements - including us. Forged in the Big Bang, the elements and their resulting compounds created the solar system, planet Earth, the air we breathe, the water we rely on and the proteins that would become life. In fact, everything in the known Universe is made up of one of the 118 elements of the periodic table - so we really should know something about them! This little book is the perfect guide, listing all the elements' vital stats, and exploring their astonishing histories and usages in an accessible and easy-to-understand way.

Optimization of Ozone Disinfection Systems with Fluorescent-Dyed Microspheres (Paperback): G Tang, B. Marias, S Teefy, R. Sakaji Optimization of Ozone Disinfection Systems with Fluorescent-Dyed Microspheres (Paperback)
G Tang, B. Marias, S Teefy, R. Sakaji
R3,386 Discovery Miles 33 860 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The operation of ozone contactors needs to be optimized to provide adequate disinfection while minimizing the formation of disinfection by-products. However, measuring the actual disinfection efficiency is impractical in a full-scale system. The objective of this project was to demonstrate of the use of polystyrene microspheres to assess and optimize the performance of full-scale ozone disinfection systems. Specifically, the researchers developed and optimized microspheres with laboratory-scale experiments, demonstrated the use of microsphere method with a full-scale ozone contactor, and applied a mathematical model for the prediction of disinfection efficiency and bromate formation in the full-scale ozone contactor. This study has shown that microspheres can be used as a surrogate for assessing the inactivation efficiency of C. parvum oocysts in ozone contactors. It is therefore recommended that water utilities using ozone as disinfectant consider performing such tests. This study has also shown that a mathematical model could be used to predict the performance of the contactor. Mathematical simulation revealed that reducing dispersion would result in more disinfection with minimal effect on bromate formation. Originally published by AwwaRF for its subscribers in 2004.
