Taking the time to get to know your body, treating it with respect and nourishing it with real fresh food is the single most important thing you can do for yourself. Eating mindfully, cutting out processed foods and embracing the foods that fuel you and leave you feeling energised are all part of the journey to finding happiness with food.
The nearly 90 recipes included in this book are packed with nourishment, providing healthy, balanced and easy meals in a bowl. Many of the recipes are vegan or vegetarian, or can easily be adapted to suit either lifestyle choice. But there is plenty for the meat-eater too, with the added bonus that not only does the food look inviting and uplifting for the soul, it’s good for your body too. There are also snippets of information about some of the ingredients to inform your food choices and why eating fresh, whole foods will benefit you.
Melissa Delport is a Cape Town-based food photographer and blogger who loves to travel. Her food career started when she entered a cooking competition in South Africa. Her love of food was born while learning to cook at her mother’s and grandmother’s knees. After years as a fad dieter, Melissa discovered the path to health and wellbeing. Linking this directly to food and working with health coach Nikita Stallbom, Melissa’s new mindset of mindful consumption was integrated into her food philosophy. Learning to release fear around mealtimes, coupled with her knowledge of food and a desire to share this way of eating, the concept of Whole: Bowl Food For Balance was born, Melissa’s first cookbook.

Upon encountering Historian, Laurel Thatcher Ulrich’s quote “Well behaved women seldom make history” – Malebo knew that she was tired of everyone else but herself having a say on who and what she should be. Appropriating this quote, Malebo boldly renounces societal expectations placed on her as a Black woman and shares her journey towards misbehaviour. According to Malebo, it is a norm for a Black woman to live through a society that will prescribe what it means to be a well behaved woman. Acting like this prescribed woman equals good behaviour. But what happens when a black woman decides to live her own life and becomes her own form of who she wants to be? She is often seen as misbehaving.
Miss Behave challenges society’s deep-seated beliefs about what it means to be a well behaved woman. In this book, Malebo tracks her journey on a path towards achieving total autonomy and self-determinism. Miss Behave will challenge, rattle and occasionally cause you to reflect on your own life – asking yourself the question – are you truly living life the way you want to?

A child is a work in progress who thrives when everyday living becomes an interactive game. Play. Learn. Know. is a guide to help Mom and Dad (and, in an ideal world, all caregivers) to shape their child's body, heart and mind with care and thoughtfulness. It gives simple and playful solutions to developing complex skills preparing children for school and life (ages 3 to 7). A child needs to experience life to become part of life. You can help your child to belong by exposing him to everyday life: name the things you touch; explain what happens around him; show him how things work; and allow him the opportunity to discover-learn, to move and ask questions freely. You don't need to know all the answers - teach him from an early age to find answers on his own. This book is not a checklist or a time sheet to tick off or fill in arbitrarily; it is a road map to guide you along the journey of development. It has no age indicators, because every child unfolds developmentally in his own time. Child development is not a race to 'get there first'. It is a journey during which there are skills to be developed, knowledge to be discovered and thousands of experiences to be enjoyed along the way to school readiness.
Across the world, 2 billion experience menstruation, yet menstruation is seen as a mark of shame. We are told not to discuss it in public, that tampons and sanitary pads should be hidden away, the blood rendered invisible. In many parts of the world, poverty, culture and religion collide causing the taboo around menstruation to have grave consequences. Younger people who menstruate are deterred from going to school, adults from work, infections are left untreated. The shame is universal and the silence a global rule.
In It's Only Blood, Anna Dahlqvist tells the shocking but always moving stories of why and how people from Sweden to Bangladesh, from the United States to Uganda, are fighting back against the shame.

Written with self-excoriating candour and the driest humour, comes a book about being a dad from one of our best loved journalists. For Tim Dowling, fatherhood has sometimes felt like two decades of lessons learned through failure. 1. Don't give your children sugary drinks and expect them to be as sweet. You could end up with a chopstick in your earhole. 2. There is no reason holidays should be thought of as relaxing. Consider them an opportunity to be shrieked at in different climates. 3. `Let's not tell mum about this' is not legally binding. It never has been. You're only trying to make yourself feel better. Drawing on what actually feels like two lifetimes of experience, Dad You Suck is a hilarious account of the joy of fatherhood, and the subtle art of transforming your children's insults into a reason for being.
