Gordel (Afrikaans, Paperback): Adriaan Coetzee Gordel (Afrikaans, Paperback)
Adriaan Coetzee
R143 Discovery Miles 1 430 Shipped within 10 - 15 working days

Onder Die Appelboom (Afrikaans, Paperback): Rutger Kopland Onder Die Appelboom (Afrikaans, Paperback)
Rutger Kopland; Translated by Daniel Hugo
R143 Discovery Miles 1 430 Shipped within 10 - 15 working days

In her first collection of poems, Abigail Cloud draws inspiration from nineteenth-century European Romantic ballets, which often portrayed scorned females as mystical spirits such as sylphs, shades, and wilis. Some of these creatures seduced men into dancing until they died -- punishment for inconstancy or lured them into love. For Cloud, the dark gravity that holds these enchanters to the earth is the same as our own and thus these demons are as everyday as air.

Sylph filters our world through the lenses of dance, folklore, and history, revealing our contemporary lives to be dreamlike and prismatic. "In the blink the mouse spent to disappear, I loved you," avows the sylph. The cost of her ascension -- and ours -- is steep: "our price speech, our forgetting breath." Such are the stakes in this complex, seductive, and stunning debut.

Gathering the best of her first five collections, a 'sexy, cerebral and romantic' introduction to one of the US's most charismatic and original poets Loose-limbed, freewheeling and conversational yet musically taut, Maureen N. McLane's poetry has been described as having 'a tonal register somewhere between teenage fangirl and Wordsworth professor' (London Review of Books). What I'm Looking For gathers selections from her first five books of poetry, from the mixture of love poems and breezy skewerings of Great Literature that characterize her debut, Same Life, to the later collections' shadowing of a mind roaming wittily through nature, philosophy, music and sex, and the bravura life-story-in-episodes of Mz N: the serial. Brainy, funny, passionate, uncool and always utterly charming, these 'sexy, cerebral and romantic' poems (The New York Times Book Review) will make you 'laugh, cry and think in quick succession, or all at once' (Sarah Howe).

Lady Anne (1989) is one of Krog’s most acclaimed poetry collections. In an attempt to make sense of her own existence, Krog compares her own life in the midst of a world of racial injustice to that of the life and times of Lady Anne Barnard, of Scottish descent, during her stay in the Cape Colony in the late eighteenth century. Gradually the two voices intertwine and merge, highlighting the complexity of marriage but ultimately also that of a colonial legacy – still relevant 28 years later.

So much soul. So much intelligence in how Parker folds in cultural references and the experiences of black womanhood. Every poem will get its hooks into you. And of course, the poems about Beyonce are the greatest because Beyonce is our queen.' Roxane Gay 'I can and have read Morgan Parker's poems over and over . . . She writes history and pleasure and kitsch and abstraction, then vanishes like a god in about 13 inches.' Eileen Myles 'Morgan Parker has a mind like wildfire and these pages are lit. I can't recall being this enthralled, entertained, and made alert by a book in a very long time.' Jami Attenberg The only thing more beautiful than Beyonce is God, and God is a black woman sipping rose and drawing a lavender bath, texting her mom, belly-laughing in the therapist's office, feeling unloved, being on display, daring to survive. Morgan Parker stands at the intersections of vulnerability and performance, of desire and disgust, of tragedy and excellence. Unrelentingly feminist, tender, ruthless and sequinned, these poems are an altar to the complexities of black American womanhood in an age of non-indictments and deja vu, and a time of wars over bodies and power. These poems celebrate and mourn. They are a chorus chanting: You're gonna give us the love we need.

A revelatory work in the tradition of Claudia Rankine's Citizen, DaMaris Hill's searing and powerful narrative-in-verse bears witness to American women of color burdened by incarceration.

"It is costly to stay free and appear / sane."

From Harriet Tubman to Assata Shakur, Ida B. Wells to Sandra Bland and Black Lives Matter, black women freedom fighters have braved violence, scorn, despair, and isolation in order to lodge their protests. In A Bound Woman Is a Dangerous Thing, DaMaris Hill honors their experiences with at times harrowing, at times hopeful responses to her heroes, illustrated with black-and-white photographs throughout.

For black American women, the experience of being bound has taken many forms: from the bondage of slavery to the Reconstruction-era criminalization of women; from the brutal constraints of Jim Crow to our own era's prison industrial complex, where between 1980 and 2014, the number of incarcerated women increased by 700%.* For those women who lived and died resisting the dehumanization of confinement--physical, social, intellectual--the threat of being bound was real, constant, and lethal.

In A Bound Woman Is a Dangerous Thing, Hill presents bitter, unflinching history that artfully captures the personas of these captivating, bound yet unbridled African-American women. Hill's passionate odes to Zora Neale Hurston, Lucille Clifton, Fannie Lou Hamer, Grace Jones, Eartha Kitt, and others also celebrate the modern-day inheritors of their load and light, binding history, author, and reader in an essential legacy of struggle.

The definitive collection of works on a subject that inspired and haunted Charles Bukowski for his entire life: alcohol Charles Bukowski turns to the bottle in this revelatory collection of poetry and prose that includes some of the writer's best and most lasting work. A self-proclaimed "dirty old man," Bukowski used alcohol as muse and as fuel, a conflicted relationship responsible for some of his darkest moments as well as some of his most joyful and inspired. In On Drinking, Bukowski expert Abel Debritto has collected the writer's most profound, funny, and memorable work on his ups and downs with the hard stuff-a topic that allowed Bukowski to explore some of life's most pressing questions. Through drink, Bukowski is able to be alone, to be with people, to be a poet, a lover, and a friend-though often at great cost. As Bukowski writes in a poem simply titled "Drinking,": "for me/it was or/is/a manner of/dying/with boots on/and gun/smoking and a/symphony music background." On Drinking is a powerful testament to the pleasures and miseries of a life in drink, and a window into the soul of one of our most beloved and enduring writers.

Universally acclaimed for his dazzling fictions, Jorge Luis Borges always considered himself to be first and foremost a poet. This collection of his poetry, the largest ever to be assembled in English (alongside the original Spanish), includes scores of pieces that have never previously been translated.

Selected from a lifetime's work, the poems explore themes that preoccupied Borges: the enigma of Time and history;
the metaphysics of Schopenhauer and Berkeley;
the cult of his ancestors and his 'mysterious habit called Buenos Aires';
and the imagery of mirrors,
mazes and swords.
The brilliance of the original Spanish is in each case matched by luminous English versions by an impressive array of translators:

In 'n Oomblik (Afrikaans, Paperback): Cas Vos In 'n Oomblik (Afrikaans, Paperback)
Cas Vos
R167 Discovery Miles 1 670 Shipped within 10 - 15 working days

Alles gebeur in 'n oomblik.
