Quite Footsteps explores moral themes relating to political and social change in South Africa. An obscene clamour that the poet sees as eviscerating our country's humanity becomes the catalyst for an excoriating attack on a time that "renders everything as matters of abuse", and a passionate demand that we find in ourselves – for ourselves, and in honour of the spirits of the dead – the capacity for the humane. This major work by one of South Africa's poets will trouble every conscience, even as it revives our faltering hope for a healed nation.

Mark Waldron
R226 R171 Discovery Miles 1 710 Save R55 (24%) Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Sometimes metaphysical, sometimes apparently confessional, sometimes challenging, often hilarious, Mark Waldron's poems take you by the arm and usher you in to a dark/light, funny/sad, silly/serious world which is exactly what the actual world looks like if you creep up on it and take it by surprise. As human beings living in society we're supposed to keep what we really think hidden, but the poems of Sweet, like Rinky-Dink want to look at the absurdity behind our posturing, because in looking at it squarely in the face we might hope to have some freedom from it. Sweet, like Rinky-Dink is Mark Waldron's fourth collection, following Meanwhile, Trees (2016), published by Bloodaxe, The Brand New Dark (2008) and The Itchy Sea (2011), both from Salt.

Eugene N. Marais
R153 Discovery Miles 1 530 Shipped within 10 - 15 working days

R143 Discovery Miles 1 430 Shipped within 10 - 15 working days

Vloeibare middelpunt (Afrikaans, Paperback): Martjie Bosman Vloeibare middelpunt (Afrikaans, Paperback)
Martjie Bosman
R143 Discovery Miles 1 430 Shipped within 10 - 15 working days

Voor-Bode (Afrikaans, Paperback): Cas Vos Voor-Bode (Afrikaans, Paperback)
Cas Vos
R172 Discovery Miles 1 720 Shipped within 10 - 15 working days

No Parole Today (Hardcover): Laura Tohe No Parole Today (Hardcover)
Laura Tohe
R296 Discovery Miles 2 960 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

Poetry and Memoir. In her first collection of poetry and prose memoir, Dine (Navajo) writer Laura Tohe describes her childhood on the reservation in Arizona and New Mexico, the joys and sorrows of boarding school life, and growing up to a wiser maturity, still capable of radiating things of beauty despite the memory of brutality and loss. When the moon died/ she reminded us of/ the earth ripping apart/ violent tremors,/ greasy oceans,/ the panic of steel winds,/ whipping shorelines and/ thirsty fields. I know of no other book that deals more directly with the Indian School experience or does it better. Tohe mourns the losses, yet never loses herself in bitterness ... this (is) a minor classic that should be in every library -- Joseph Bruchac.

Kerry Hardie is one of Ireland's leading poets. Her Selected Poems covers work written over two decades and draws on five collections. Her poetry questions, celebrates and challenges all aspects of life and experience, but ultimately is concerned with the quiet realisation that 'there is nothing to do in the world except live in it'. A number of her poems are narratives or parables in which experience yields a spiritual lesson and consolation; others chart a coming to terms with death or illness and an acceptance of inevitability or flux. Human life quivers in consort with other lives in these seasons of the heart.

Incendiary Art (Paperback): Patricia Smith Incendiary Art (Paperback)

Incendiary Art confronts the tyranny against the black male body and the tenacious grief of the mothers of murdered African American men. Dynamic sequences, including a compelling chronicle of the devastating murder of Emmett Till, serve as a backdrop for present-day racial calamities and calls for resistance. With impassioned eloquence and a sharpened focus on incidents of national mayhem and mourning, Patricia Smith reinvents the role of witness with an incendiary fusion of forms, including prose poems, ghazals, sestinas, and sonnets. This phenomenal, visionary book addresses what is frightening, and what is revelatory, about history now. Winner of the 2018 Kingsley Tufts Poetry Award and 2018 NAACP Image Award, Incendiary Art was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize and 2018 Los Angeles Times Book Prize.

Sylph (Paperback): Abigail Cloud Sylph (Paperback)
Abigail Cloud
R314 R252 Discovery Miles 2 520 Save R62 (20%) Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

In her first collection of poems, Abigail Cloud draws inspiration from nineteenth-century European Romantic ballets, which often portrayed scorned females as mystical spirits such as sylphs, shades, and wilis. Some of these creatures seduced men into dancing until they died -- punishment for inconstancy or lured them into love. For Cloud, the dark gravity that holds these enchanters to the earth is the same as our own and thus these demons are as everyday as air.

Sylph filters our world through the lenses of dance, folklore, and history, revealing our contemporary lives to be dreamlike and prismatic. "In the blink the mouse spent to disappear, I loved you," avows the sylph. The cost of her ascension -- and ours -- is steep: "our price speech, our forgetting breath." Such are the stakes in this complex, seductive, and stunning debut.

Perhaps most famous for UNDER MILK WOOD and his poems 'Do Not Go Gentle into that Good Night', and 'Death Shall have no Dominion', Dylan Thomas was a hugely colourful and iconic poet whose work was greatly admired by contemporaries such as Edith Sitwell and Sylvia Plath. He wrote well over 380 published poems as well as 50 journal-published poems, pastiches, poems from letters and radio plays. This new edition of the author's poems looks at his body of work in a new light, including material that was previously overlooked or excluded from collections, as well as bringing to bear advances in critical theory. Most importantly it emphasises how accessible and immediate his work was, demonstrating its relevance to a contemporary audience.

'Lines off' is a term used for lines spoken from the wings of a theatre, or off-camera in a film. It was while Hugo Williams was out of circulation following transplant surgery that he wrote the poems for this new collection - the first since I Knew the Bride (2014), shortlisted for the Forward and T. S. Eliot prizes. From youthful days 'upside down in the Crazy Room, / rising and falling on the Haunted Swing', he takes us to distant countries, both actual and metaphorical; participates in the 'mortal pantomime' of the hospital ward with humorous frankness; and offers a percipient account of growing older, with all its attendant doubts and disturbances. Autobiographical, psychological, remedial, Lines Off heralds the return of this acclaimed poet, back to the stage of the page, offering us 'the performance of a lifetime'.

Sy was my dogter.

A Poet's notebook... with new poems...obviously... includes not just recent favourites, television and radio commissioned poems, some freshly minted verse written especially for this book but also notes and gives the background on how, why, and where the poems were written. Such documentary reportage and wider contemporary reflection gives a fascinating insight into the genesis, development and presentation of the 30 poems chosen. In effect, the book is part journal, part commentary on the wider implications of 'how did we all end up here'? It addresses the light and shade of our days, the celebrations and catastrophes, and acutely observes the collective state and soul of 'this one life'. Complete with the poet's trademark humour encouraging the reader to practice, once again, child-like glee. These are poems you can whistle, sing, chant... and be silent with.

In her debut poetry collection The Glacier s Wake, Katy Didden attends to the large-scale tectonics of the natural world as she considers the sources and aftershocks of mortality, longing, and loss. A number of the poems in the collection are monologues in recurring voices specifically those of a glacier, a sycamore, and a wasp offering an inventive, prismatic approach to Didden s ambitious subject matter. As poet Scott Cairns says, Didden s is a capacious voice, able at once to deliver both wit and wonder, canny insight and meditative mystery. In The Glacier s Wake, the scientific, the elegiac, and the fantastical intertwine in the service of considering our human place constructive and destructive, powerful and impermanent amidst the massive shiftings that are occurring endlessly all around us.
