Development NGOs North and South now exist in a global web of relationships. Not only money and people but ideas, information and knowledge move more often and more quickly than ever before around this vast, diverse community. Southern NGOs have many ideas and a great deal of information and knowledge, but often have less power to influence what projects and programmes are undertaken, or even how they are done. Ideas may be drawn from the South, but the way in which they are taken up, changed and then re-disseminated is dominated by northern institutions and agendas and by global waves of development fashion. From field research in Ghana, India, Mexico and Europe, this book explores how southern NGOs can have more of a voice in determining the work they actually do, and how they can get more of their ideas on to the international development agenda.. From the experiences of small and large NGOs, the book reports on their recommendations for overcoming, challenging or bypassing information loops on funding, ideas and networks.

When Ian Fuhr started out as a businessman 40 years ago, the secret of his success was already cemented in two traits - humility and a desire to break the rules. A spirit of fearlessness, fun, honesty and respect has underscored his every venture, which spans the music industry, discount department stores, a labour relations consultancy and, eventually, South Africa's biggest beauty chain, Sorbet. In Get that feeling Ian shares the principles that have guided him over the years and takes the reader through the arduous but fulfilling process of building a pioneering people's brand that was born on a dream and built on a 'feeling'. By emphasising customer service and putting people before profit, his vision holds valuable lessons for entrepreneurs who are keen to make a sustainable contribution to South Africa's economy.
Entrepreneurship is a dynamic process constantly evolving through innovation, in that entrepreneurs devise profitable products and services that did not previously exist. This process requires entrepreneurs to have major skills in different business areas.
The second edition of this book is about entrepreneurship in the South African business environment, and about the entrepreneurial process. It highlights three main aspects, namely: the entrepreneurial part of starting and running a business; the marketing of products and services; and the financial aspects of a profitable and sustainable business.
In a practical and accessible way this book describes how entrepreneurs should arrange resources and activities in order for the potential business to operate as profitably as possible. The two aspects of marketing and finance are the most important functions of business that every entrepreneur needs to know in order to be sustainable both as a start-up enterprise and for long-term sustainability.

Bridge the gap between leadership development and career preparation! This guidebook gives leadership educators the tools they need to help students develop the competencies necessary for their chosen careers and required by their academic programs. It also offers a way to understand and demonstrate the effectiveness of leadership programs. Organized into chapters each focused on one of 60 leadership competencies common across 522 academic degree programs accredited by 97 agencies, each chapter covers: * a definition and description of the competency through the lens of each of four dimensions: knowledge, value, ability, and behavior; * a scenario related to college student leadership that showcases the competency in action; * related competencies to help readers understand how developing one competency may also intentionally or unintentionally develop another; * a correlation of the competency to the Relational Leadership Model, the Social Change Model, the Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership, and/or Emotionally Intelligent Leadership; and * tangible curricular ideas to use with students to help them develop each dimension of the competency.
Public administration comprises two integrated components, namely the political process in terms of which government policy is formulated, and a management process in terms of how this policy must be implemented. The introduction of strategic and performance management systems and procedures in the public sector has become international standard practice, often resulting in a comprehensive redesign of the traditionally bureaucratic legislative framework - strategic management links the government organisation to the community, thus incorporating the actual needs of the community in government's planning, while performance management gears the organisation towards service delivery. Strategic and performance management in the public sector provides an integrated management model for 21st century government organisations. This title is a step-by-step presentation of the strategic and performance management process, starting with government policies and culminating in a comprehensive performance management system. It contains practical examples, activities, relevant legislation boxes and supplementary material for further understanding.

The need for results delivery in private and public sector organisations has increased, with stakeholders putting substantial pressure on organisations to demonstrate good performance in an environment with limited operational resources. In effect, organisations are being expected to deliver better results with fewer resources. By employing the appropriate tools and techniques of monitoring and evaluation, organisations can be better equipped to ensure that "what is planned" becomes "what is achieved". Monitoring and evaluation of policies, programmes and projects explains key concepts and practices involved in performance tracking and assessment. Monitoring and evaluation of policies, programmes and projects has drawn from the diverse experiences and expertise of the authors in public and private sector management of organisations, as well as practical insights gained from practitioners and students at various training courses, nationally and internationally. The balance between the more abstract, theoretical underpinnings of the subject and its practical aspects makes it easy to follow and incorporate. Contents include the following: Conceptual models of the policy process; the fundamentals and practical steps of policy monitoring and evaluation; the result-based management approach; tools and techniques for monitoring and evaluation; the use of research of policies, programmes and projects.

In our typically fast-paced life in the 21st century it is not uncommon for people to feel a loss of direction, purpose and meaning. It would seem that deeper and more fundamental questions about our existence and the significance of our efforts and busy lives are seldom asked and contemplated. In many areas and at different levels there also appears to be a vacuum in inspirational leadership. Instead of waiting and hoping for others to rise to the challenges of our time, however, we can reflect on our own leadership and commit to grow as inspirational leaders ourselves. How well do we lead our own lives, our own families? How do we ensure that our own flame of inspiration remains strong? Do we have the ability to inspire others? Leadership thoughts attempts to open up perspectives, stimulate thinking and inspire attitudes and behaviour that would help to unlock the best in us - especially in the context of the workplace and the challenges that we face as a nation. It will be appreciated by students of life in general, by those who regard themselves as experienced but not complete leaders, as well as aspirant leaders who are eager to lay the right foundations for their leadership challenges in future.
The value chain is a major focus in today's business world, and many companies and managers allocate considerable resources to understanding and analysing their value chain. The main reason for doing this is either to eliminate activities that do not add value, or to improve on activities that do not add sufficient value. In order to ensure optimum customer satisfaction, businesses must integrate the activities of various departments and functions. This demands a sound understanding of the chain of activities and their interrelationship with other business activities. The authors of Business management adopt the value chain as a framework in order to help business students to visualise how the value chain works. New ground is broken in that management is not dealt with merely from a functional perspective. While the goal is to introduce undergraduate learners to the concept of the value chain, it is not, however, to offer a comprehensive directory on the related literature. The book is divided into three parts. Part A introduces the reader to business management, the value chain, the business environment, the entrepreneurial process, and the considerations that need to be taken into account when establishing a business. Part B examines the activities of the value chain, starting with general management and leadership, followed by the primary and support activities that constitute the value chain. In Part C, contemporary management issues are reviewed, including diversity management, business ethics, globalisation, creativity and innovation, environmental issues, corporate governance and black economic empowerment. Business management - a value chain approach covers basic points of theory, but it also has a strong practical approach, and includes self-evaluation exercises, challenging experiential exercises, information about relevant websites, interesting discussion questions and case studies, as well as useful lists of key terms. This revised second edition has been updated in respect of new legislation such as the Companies Act, the Co-operatives Act, the Consumer Protection Act and the National Credit Act. Statistics have also been aligned with Census 2011.
