The UK's most downloaded sports title of 2012! The prequel to the Movie Top Dog starring Leo Gregory - Directed by Martin Kemp APPEARANCES CAN BE DECEPTIVE - as As Paul Jarvis of the National Soccer Intelligence Unit is only too well aware. He knows that Billy Evans is no ordinary Cockney lad made good. He's also a thug, a villain and a cop killer. Jarvis just hasn't been able to prove it...Yet. So when Jarvis discovers that Evans is putting together a hooligan 'Super Crew' to follow the England national soccer team to Italy, he feels sure he can finally put Evans behind bars - if only someone can infiltrate the group and get him the proof he needs. But nothing is ever that simple. The Crew believe Evans is just out for a full-on riot. Jarvis thinks he's trafficking drugs. But Billy Evans is always one step ahead. He has another plan. And it will be catastrophic for everyone concerned. EXCEPT HIM.

The Development of Sport in Donegal, 1880-1935 (Hardcover): Conor Curran The Development of Sport in Donegal, 1880-1935 (Hardcover)
Conor Curran
R905 R720 Discovery Miles 7 200 Save R185 (20%) Ships in 7 - 11 working days

During the nineteenth century sport underwent a revolution which was heavily influenced by the social and economic changes brought about by the Industrial Revolution in England. How this sporting 'revolution' affected the development of sport at a micro-level, in a peripheral Irish setting, has received only limited attention. Donegal, a rather isolated county lying in the north-west of Ireland, but at the time part of the United Kingdom and the British Empire, has thus far received little analysis. The development of Gaelic and association football will be given particular emphasis but cricket, hockey and rugby will also be explored in detail. This book is the first comprehensive study of sport in Donegal throughout the period from 1880 until 1935. In assessing developments at a local and national level, it examines how structures for competitions and teams underwent a significant change within the county and throughout Ireland from the late Victorian period until the early years of the Irish Free State.Conor Curran illustrates the incompleteness of the Irish sporting 'revolution' and how the growth of sport in Donegal relied mainly on local individuals' enthusiasm rather than on any national, or even provincial, administrative agencies. Of particular importance in the decision to undertake an examination of sport there is the diversity of the county, socially, culturally and physically, which means that it differed from a number of other Irish counties and many of its clubs lacked a particular unity for the administration of sport to work effectively throughout its area. How the growth of sport in Donegal contrasted with wider developments will be examined in this book, as, despite these failures, by the end of 1934 there were at least sixty-seven Gaelic football teams in operation and at least 103 soccer teams.

The Black Man in Brazilian Soccer (Hardcover): Mario Filho The Black Man in Brazilian Soccer (Hardcover)
Mario Filho; Contributions by Jack A Draper III
R2,111 Discovery Miles 21 110 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

At turns lyrical, ironic, and sympathetic, Mario Filho's chronicle of "the beautiful game" is a classic of Brazilian sports writing. Filho (1908-1966)-a famous Brazilian journalist after whom Rio's Maracana stadium is officially named-tells the Brazilian soccer story as a boundary-busting one of race relations, popular culture, and national identity. Now in English for the first time, the book highlights national debates about the inclusion of African-descended people in the body politic and situates early black footballers as key creators of Brazilian culture. When first introduced to Brazil by British expatriots at the end of the nineteenth century, the game was reserved for elites, excluding poor, working-class, and black Brazilians. Filho, drawing on lively in-depth interviews with coaches, players, and fans, points to the 1920s and 1930s as watershed decades when the gates cracked open. The poor players and players of color entered the game despite virulent discrimination. By the mid-1960s, Brazil had established itself as a global soccer powerhouse, winning two World Cups with the help of star Afro-Brazilians such as Pele and Garrincha. As a story of sport and racism in the world's most popular sport, this book could not be more relevant today.

Sidestepping the inflated egos and scandal that have infiltrated many men's sports, college female softball players exhibit power and grace on the field as well as camaraderie, high achievement and vulnerability off the field. This balance not only makes the game compelling to watch, but it also elevates women's softball as an aspirational model for other sports. Focusing on the 2018 season, this book explores gender performance and sexuality in softball, how the influx of money from the sport's growth has reshaped expectations of success, and traditional media coverage of women's sports.
