Less than thirty years after Lewis and Clark completed their epic journey, Prince Maximilian of Wied--a German naturalist--and his entourage set off on their own daring expedition across North America. Accompanying the prince on this 1832-34 voyage was Swiss artist Karl Bodmer, whose drawings and watercolors--designed to illustrate Maximilian's journals--now rank among the great treasures of nineteenth-century American art. This lavishly illustrated book juxtaposes Bodmer's landscape images with modern-day photographs of the same views, allowing readers to see what has changed, and what seems unchanged, since the time Maximilian and Bodmer made their storied trip up the Missouri River.
To discover how the areas Bodmer depicted have changed over time, photographer Robert M. Lindholm and anthropologist W. Raymond Wood made several trips over a period of years, from 1985 to 2002, to locate and record the same sites--all the way from Boston Harbor, where Maximilian and Bodmer began their journey, to Fort McKenzie, in modern-day western Montana. Pairing sixty-seven Bodmer works side by side with Lindholm's photographs of the same sites, this volume uses the comparison of old and new images to reveal alterations through time--and the encroachment of a built environment--across diverse landscapes.

Published to coincide with a major exhibition at Sir John Soane's Museum, London from October 25th 2013 - January 25th 2014, touring to The Beecroft Art Gallery, Westcliff-on-Sea, England and the British School at Rome. Alan Sorrell attended the Royal College of Art in the mid-1920s in a period that saw the emergence of Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious, John Piper, Henry Moore and Barnett Freedman. From 1928 to 1932 he was a student at The British School at Rome, Italy; from the 1930s Sorrell painted a large cycle of murals including his celebrated Working Boats from Around the British Coast for the Festival of Britain in 1951. As an airman during the Second World War, Sorrell produced a remarkable series of paintings characterized by a new perspective, broad horizons and tilted aerial views which were to become a hallmark of his post-war reconstruction drawings. He is perhaps best remembered for his archeological illustrations for magazines and books and his reconstruction drawings for the Ministry of Works (later English Heritage, UK). Alan Sorrell's vision was born out of the Romantic British tradition exemplified by Blake, Palmer and their 20th-century disciples. This book makes it possible at last to assess the full scope of Sorrell's work and the underlying poetic vision that runs through it. Comprising a series of essays the book sets out to chart Sorrell's life and achievements, as well as illustrating the range and diversity of his talents, most works having never previously been reproduced.

Louisiana is in a desperate battle to save what remains of its coastal wetlands, which are disappearing at the rate of a football field--size area every 38 minutes. Most people are unaware of the devastating transformation of this remote region, though the effects are detrimental for the entire country economically, culturally, and environmentally. Hoping that art will inspire concern where statistics have not, and focusing on the marshlands' beauty rather than their destruction, nature photographer C. C. Lockwood and painter Rhea Gary have joined together in Marsh Mission to show that a picture is worth at least a thousand words. Their rapturous thirty photographs and thirty paintings may well leave one speechless.
For an entire year, C.C. immersed himself in the wetlands, living on a houseboat -- the Wetland Wanderer -- with his wife, Sue, a schoolteacher, who created an interactive classroom from the boat via the Internet. They covered more than 5,000 miles, taking the pulse of their environs and documenting everything from oil rigs to egrets and vivid setting suns. Rhea sometimes joined the Lockwoods and other times ventured out in her own bateau, designed to hold an easel for making oil-on-paper sketches. She produced the final oil paintings on canvas in her studio.

2011 Turner Prize winner Martin Boyce, based in Glasgow, says he tries to capture the beauty in unloved everyday places. This exhibition catalog for the rising-star sculptor shows the powerful atmospheres he creates, transforming galleries into alternative realities filled with objects that are familiar yet skewed. Litter bins are lopsided. Rusting benches take on irregular shapes. Trees are square. Leaves with brutally straightened edges litter the floor. Sharp, haphazard letters of the alphabet cascade down the walls. Boyce says his goal is to look at ''the things that we pass through every day and occasionally catch a glimpse of, and maybe see something that has a meaningful resonance.'' All the highlights of the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition 2019, chosen by this year's co-ordinator, the painter Jock McFadyen RA. The Royal Academy's legendary Summer Exhibition has been an annual event since 1769, making it the longest-running art exhibition of its kind. The exhibition, which includes paintings, prints, drawings, sculpture, architectural design, photography and models, is the largest open-submission show in the UK. First published in the 1870s, the Summer Exhibition Illustrated presents the highlights of each year's selection. The Royal Academicians on the Hanging Committee in 2019 include Stephen Chambers, Anne Desmet, Bob and Roberta Smith and Richard Wilson. Together they will decide which artists - professional and amateur alike - will have the chance to display and to sell their work in the galleries of Burlington House, to be seen by thousands of visitors. The painter Jock McFadyen RA will co-ordinate the Summer Exhibition this year. His essay explains his ideas for the show and provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse into this idiosyncratic fixture of the London calendar.
The work of counterculture artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster, whose art is a complex punk-rock take on modern consumer culture. Enormous neon signs, intricate silhouette portraits constructed of trash heaps, and a work titled Instant Gratification: British artists Tim Noble and Sue Webster thrive on the thrills of illumination, love, language, shadows, garbage, and cash. "British Rubbish" showcases their work in all its splashy glory. Their art evokes both gaudy Vegas culture and down-and-dirty punk rock: a combination of cynical extravagance and a defiant, rebellious sensibility. Extravagant, irreverent, sometimes coarse, and always sharply clever, "British Rubbish" is both a paean to and sly denunciation of conspicuous consumption.
The only comprehensive volume of Homer's magazine illustrations, with extensive scholarly treatment. Winslow Homer (1836-1910), arguably the best-known American artist of the nineteenth century, created three distinctly different bodies of work in the course of his long career: paintings, book illustrations, and illustrations for the pictorial press, the magazine-like illustrated journals of his day. A number of books and exhibition catalogues have dealt with his career as a painter, and historian David Tatham treated all of Homer's work as an illustrator of literature in his Winslow Homer and the Illustrated Book. Now, ten years later, Tatham has completed a full, scholarly account of Homer's work for pictorial magazines such as Harper's Weekly, Appleton's Monthly, and Every Saturday. Homer's work for pictorial magazines is substantial, to say the least. It amounts to some 250 wood-engraved images published between 1857 and 1875. These wood engravings are collected assiduously and are exhibited frequently in museums. They differ from Homer's book illustrations in that they are independent from the texts; Homer chose and treated the great majority of his magazine subjects much as he did his paintings. They are, in essence, original works of graphic art. The illustrations reproduced here cover a remarkable range. They constitute the first substantial body of American art about the life of the city streets, the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, abolition, and the New Woman. They include compelling treatments of the Civil War, rural childhood, and wilderness. They also comprise an essential contribution to the study of one of the masters of American art.
