The Social Work Act of 1968 in Scotland set out to replace Victorian prisons, lunatic asylums and orphanages, and challenge the Poor Law mentalities which had built and sustained them for generations. With the aid of a wide professional career, football tactics, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Marxism, and wit, Alistair Findlay reveals the buzz, vitality and inner dynamic of the frontline of Scottish social work in the first memoir written by someone who works in the service. His poetry collection, Dancing With Big Eunice, also inspired by his social work, was acclaimed by Bob Holman, who said: `He conveys its sweat, its smell, its reality. He understands both its trivia and its enormity.'

This is a collection of interviews with15 South African theatre practitioners who have made their mark on the development of anti-apartheid theatre. The project was launched out of curiosity to find out what kept alternative theatre alive and kicking during the years of repression, and also how these people envisaged the role of theatre in the cultural development of post-apartheid South Africa. The interviews, some of which are also personal testimonies, throw new light on the ways in which theatre was able to get past the censors and through the security meshes of the special Branch, and how it helped conscientise the township youth during the final phase of the struggle. The book also uncovers some of the latent tensions in the wings among some of the practitioners, some of which may still be waiting to be resolved. Interviews were conducted with, amongst others, Zakes Mda, Ronnie Govender, John Kani and Gibson Kente.
In this title examines the grim reality of postliberation southern Africa and also the forms of resistance that the re-subordination of the continent now calls for. In the process he exposes and contests the rhetoric that serves as apologia for the 'Empire of Capital', and shows the linkages between inequalities and injustices reinforced by the 'free' market on the one hand and, on the other, by the assertive religiosity and ethnic messianism that the 'Empire' helps to emerge and then uses as 'justification' for renewed imperialist intervention. His title makes a significant contribution to the discussion on Imperialism and resistance to it in the present day. The author tells this story forcefully with reference to southern Africa and 'its struggle against white colonial overlordship and authoritarian capitalist imposition'. The first part evokes both the decolonization of southern Africa and its grim recolonization. The title then moves on to critique the ideologues of empire and to mark the emergence of new struggles against the new subordination in southern Africa and elsewhere, to discuss their contours and assess their possibilities. The title asserts the relevance of socialism as the only real alternative to the logic of empire and the marketplace.
