The South African economy has a secret weapon: stokvels. If harnessed correctly, investments in stokvels could significantly bolster the economy. The following statistics, provided by the National Stokvel Association of South Africa, are mind-blowing: at present there are 11.4 million South Africans who are members of stokvels; around R44 billion is pooled collectively by ordinary people in stokvels; and it is saved by 820 000 stokvels. A lot of ideas have been put forward on how these monies can be utilised by stokvels, but it is not really clear how these can be practically applied.
This book will appeal to readers who are already in a stokvel, those who want to be in one, and even those who never thought of joining one. It contains all the necessary information you need about this form of investment, including:
Most importantly, it explains how an individual can make money by being part of a stokvel.

In the past few years, so many scandals have rocked corporate South Africa that crises seem to be the norm rather than the exception. In the glare of the public eye, with cameras, microphones and cellphones in their face, many leaders who excel in organisations suddenly become scared, confused and can even appear shady.
When Crisis Strikes looks at a variety of crises in the age of social media in South Africa and abroad, with examples of who got it right, who got it wrong and how they could have done better. The organisations range from schools to local companies to multinationals caught up in state capture claims and giants such as Boeing and BP.
The book provides ten simple and effective rules to help manage crisis situations. The practical advice in each rule is backed up by academic research that draws from public relations, marketing, management, leadership and psychology. It combines insights from a seasoned journalist and an accomplished academic to give you the advice and tools to ward off a crisis before it strikes and, if it’s too late, to resolve a situation quickly and with integrity.

This book is your road map to avoiding the pitfalls, finding the ‘smart-cuts’, and ensuring that your efforts amount to an empire rather than a ruin.

Seeing that this is my third published book, do you think I now qualify to introduce myself as “Author Afrika Mhlophe”? Or, better still, how about the superlative “Major Author”? Somehow I don’t think anyone would be impressed with such self-aggrandizement. Besides, my vocation as a writer is a separate issue from my identity. And the same is true of my roles as a pastor and public speaker. I never mention these roles except when someone prompts me by asking the question, “What do you do?”
The operative word in this question is do. The word refers to that which a person carries out or performs. In my case, I do write for various publications, I do lead a church and I do speak on various platforms. But—and this is a very important “but”—I am not a performer but a person. I am also not a position or a role. For instance, you might refer to South African Olympic gold medalist Wade van Niekerk as an athlete—in acknowledgement of what he does. But you will be conscious that Van Niekerk is a human being and not a human doing.
My involvement in ministry now spans 20 years, but I am always at loss for words when I meet ministers who insist on introducing themselves with their ecclesiastical “titles”. I sometimes wish to blurt out and say, “But ‘apostle’ is not your first name.” There are two things that are wrong with this obsession with titles.

Most people are rich for a single day in their lives: the day they retire and receive their retirement savings. This moment is more critical than many people realise – it marks the change from saving for retirement to drawing an income from savings that will ideally sustain them until they die. All too often, pensioners end up destitute because they make the wrong decisions once they retire.
It is crucial for retirees to apply themselves to securing a sustainable income. This book, co-written by well-known semi-retired journalist Bruce Cameron and respected financial planner Wouter Fourie, provides a straightforward and comprehensive overview of the vital issues that impact on retirement, such as taxation, investments, healthcare, estate planning and where to live when retired. It also identifies warning signs to look out for in order to avoid financial troubles.
This is the ultimate guide to help you achieve a secure and successful retirement. This new edition is based on the 2019 Budget figures.
