John Libbey Eurotext continues to publish the proceedings of the gastroenterology seminars taught by leading European specialists and organised by the European Association for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy (EAGE). The aim of the book is to describe major clinical and therapeutic progress observed during 2003.
Every two years, the world's leading specialists meet to exchange information on the most recent advances in understanding metals and the part they play in treating some diseases, especially cancer. Most of the elements in our environment are metals. Some are essential for life, such as copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, nickel and zinc; others are toxic, such as arsenic, cadmium, lead and mercury. This book aims to help advance our knowledge of the role of metal ions in a number of fields in biology and medicine. It reproduces the papers given at the International Symposium on Metal Ions in Biology and Medicine organised in Munich in May 1998.
John Libbey Eurotext is continuing to publish the proceedings of these courses in gastroenterology organised in Europe by the world's leading specialists. The July course will cover bacterial gastrointestinal infections, which doctors are increasingly called upon to treat. For example diarrhoea, the best known of these conditions, is no longer specific to the developing world and many bacterial infections are now appearing in western countries. Biological and clinical data are presented here in a synoptic work for young practitioners, edited by EAGE president Professor Galmiche. Latest knowledge about the mechanisms of these infections, their interactions with other systems and their medium- and long-term treatments has enabled specialists to lay the first foundations for future therapies, in particular treatments for and vaccines against diarrhoea.

8th Conference on Cytochrome P450, Lisbon, Portugal, October 1993. This book aims to promote the new concepts and aspects of cytochrome P450 science more intensively investigated since the previous meetings of the series. It includes original contributions from some of the most distinguished specialists in the area. The first three chapters concern topics on the evolution of cytochrome P450, the diversity of regulatory mechanisms involved in biogenesis and their importance in environment, cancer risk assessment and immunotoxicity. Chapter 4 deals with biotechnology and novel P450 functions, and includes the opening plenary lecture on basic P450 research and applications in drug development. Chapters 5 and 6 present the most recent progress in cytochrome P450 molecular structure and electron flow mechanisms. Finally, chapter 7 is a compilation of selected papers contributed by the participants in the areas of the physico-chemistry and molecular biology of cytochrome P450.
A fuller appreciation of the medical, physical and biological aspects of metals is necessary to advance knowledge about which metals are vital to human health, the treatment of disease, their uses, the environmental problems caused by their use, and their interactions with other chemical and biological products. This book, written by leading world specialists, surveys the latest advances in the understanding of metals, sets out the bases for future research and constitutes a remarkable working tool in the context of international research co-operation. A work that will enthrall specialists in internal medicine and respiratory disease, cancerologists and biologists. 3rd International Symposium on Metal Ions in Biology and Medicine, held in Montreal, Canada, May 1994.
Stemming from research of international experts in demography, epidemiology, gerontology, psychiatry, this book presents: a study of necessary conditions to compare several life expectancy computations in health, because current computation methods are different from one country to another; discussions of methods of interpretation of chronological life expectancy series; a survey of potential uses of life expectancy in health in order to allow sociosanitary planning; how to harmonise information collection and life computations.
Multimodal interface systems make it possible to interact with computers using speech and hearing, touch and gesture. The role of vision in human computer interaction could therefore be brought back to its natural place in communication. In many applications, non-visual presentation methods could be used efficiently to provide more natural human-computer interfaces. This evolution is of particular relevance for the visually handicapped. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete understanding of state-of-the-art research in non-visual human-computer interaction. The book is aimed at all researchers and developers interested in improving the accessibility of software applications, especially for people with disabilities.
This book gives an update on the inhibitory mechanisms involved in the various steps of hematopoietic stem cell proliferation and differentiation. The authors report the latest research advances, factors that control the cell cycle, receptors function, molecular approaches, the in vivo and in vitro effects of several inhibitors, the inhibition of hematopoiesis by viruses, protecting the bone marrow. The book contains the latest results published by the best international specialists and will be fascinating reading for all those interested in this subject.
For the first time, based on an extensive survey conducted across the whole of Europe by the Association Descartes, the details of over 1,000 persons and organisations are now available. The Directory is broken down into 14 sections : the first section is devoted to European institutions; the next twelve cover each EEC country and list the names of persons and organisations involved in bioethics; a complementary listing covers indispensable persons or organisations; A reference work both for researchers and anybody concerned with bioethics.
Reflecting the latest exam developments, this book focuses on providing complete revision coverage for the PACES exam. Get Through MRCP: PACES is laid out into five easy-to-use chapters, each representing a station from the exam, and integrates both the clinical and non-clinical aspects of the exam. A wide range of commonly asked stations are presented with detailed information laid out in a clear, concise manner, aided by photographs and diagrams. Basic exam technique and tips on how to pass the examination are provided. There is also a key focus on history and communication skills since these are the toughest elements of the exam.
The ITI Treatment Guide series is a compendium of evidence-based implant therapy techniques in daily practice. Using an illustrated step-by-step approach, renowned clinicians demonstrate how to manage different clinical situations with an emphasis on sound diagnostics, evidence-based treatment, and predictable outcomes. The sixth volume of the ITI Treatment Guide series provides clinical recommendations for implant-supported prosthodontic treatments in patients with multiple missing adjacent teeth in the esthetic zone. The authors review the current literature before detailing the treatment alternatives and procedures based on the scienti fic and clinical evidence. Special emphasis is given to preoperative evaluation, treatment planning, and assessment of risk factors for the complex indications of the esthetic zone. Descriptions of the surgical and prosthodontic procedures include step-by-step clinical case presentations. Complications of various etiologies are also highlighted with preventive measures as well as clinical cases that document their management.
What useful changes has feminism brought to science? Feminists have enjoyed success in their efforts to open many fields to women as participants. But the effects of feminism have not been restricted to altering employment and professional opportunities for women. The essays in this volume explore how feminist theory has had a direct impact on research in the biological and social sciences, in medicine, and in technology, often providing the impetus for fundamentally changing the theoretical underpinnings and practices of such research. In archaeology, evidence of women's hunting activities suggested by spears found in women's graves is no longer dismissed; computer scientists have used feminist epistemologies for rethinking the human-interface problems of our growing reliance on computers. Attention to women's movements often tends to reinforce a presumption that feminism changes institutions through critique-from-without. This volume reveals the potent but not always visible transformations feminism has brought to science, technology, and medicine from within.
