Acts of Possession - Collecting in America (Paperback, New): Leah Dilworth Acts of Possession - Collecting in America (Paperback, New)
Leah Dilworth
R1,046 Discovery Miles 10 460 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

The success of internet auction sites like e-Bay and the cult status of public television's Antiques Roadshow attest to the continued popularity of collecting in American culture. The thriving market for mass-produced collectibles confirms that consumption patterns are imbued with layers of cultural significance-meanings largely determined within the realm of the marketplace. Acts of Possession investigates the ways cultural meanings of collections have evolved and yet remained surprisingly unchanged throughout American history. Drawing upon the body of theoretical work on collecting, the contributors investigate how, what, and why Americans have collected and why they are attracted to certain objects, exploring the inherent meanings behind systems of organization and display. Essays consider the meanings of Thomas Jefferson's Indian Hall at Monticello; the pedagogical theories behind nineteenth-century children's cabinets of curiosities; collections of Native American artifacts; and the ability of the owners of dollhouses to construct meaning within the context of Victorian ideals of domesticity. The authors also consider some darker aspects of collecting-hoarding, fetishism, and compulsive behavior-scrutinizing collections of racist memorabilia and fascist propaganda. The final essay posits the serial killer as a collector, an investigation into the dangerous objectification of humans themselves. Focusing on individual as opposed to museum collections, the contributors employ the methodology of several disciplines, including American studies, history, art history, and museum studies.

The Great Pretender - A Catalogue of Chaos and Creativity (Paperback): Nick Perry The Great Pretender - A Catalogue of Chaos and Creativity (Paperback)
Nick Perry
R242 R195 Discovery Miles 1 950 Save R47 (19%) Ships in 10 - 15 working days

'Give me three years and we'll be millionaires,' Nick challenged his long-suffering family in 1980, when cash was king. 'I've got an idea that's going to take us to the top.' Tinkering with alchemy in an old stable he shared with a Shire horse, Nick discovered how to create the most convincing antique replicas ever made. He started by selling a few of his netsukes on a market stall at the Birmingham Rag Market and met extraordinary and eccentric people, the risk-taking gamblers with fast tongues. Each had their own money-spinning ideas; you name it, he replicated it for the wheeler-dealers chasing the dream. When Nick and his crew reached the rarefied circles of the London art world he realised he could be dangerously out of his depth. This is the unlikely and often hilarious story of where nothing but enthusiasm and self-belief can take you.

Inventing the World - Venice and the Transformation of Western Civilization (Hardcover): Meredith F. Small Inventing the World - Venice and the Transformation of Western Civilization (Hardcover)
Meredith F. Small
R617 R503 Discovery Miles 5 030 Save R114 (18%) Ships in 7 - 11 working days

An epic cultural journey that reveals how Venetian ingenuity and inventions-from sunglasses and forks to bonds and currency-shaped modernity. How did a small, isolated city-with a population that never exceeded 100,000, even in its heyday-come to transform western civilization? Acclaimed anthropologist Meredith Small, the author of the groundbreaking Our Babies, Ourselves examines the the unique Venetian social structure that was key to their explosion of creativity and invention that ranged from the material to social. Whether it was boats or money, medicine or face cream, opera, semicolons, tiramisu or child-labor laws, these all originated in Venice and have shaped contemporary notions of institutions and conventions ever since. The foundation of how we now think about community, health care, money, consumerism, and globalization all sprung forth from the Laguna Veneta. But Venice is far from a historic relic or a life-sized museum. It is a living city that still embraces its innovative roots. As climate change effects sea-level rises, Venice is on the front lines of preserving its legacy and cultural history to inspire a new generation of innovators.

The Steamboat Bertrand and Missouri River Commerce (Paperback): Ronald R. Switzer The Steamboat Bertrand and Missouri River Commerce (Paperback)
Ronald R. Switzer
R810 Discovery Miles 8 100 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

On April 1, 1865, the steamboat Bertrand, a sternwheeler bound from St. Louis to Fort Benton in Montana Territory, hit a snag in the Missouri River and sank twenty miles north of Omaha. The crew removed only a few items before the boat was silted over. For more than a century thereafter, the Bertrand remained buried until it was discovered by treasure hunters, its cargo largely intact. This book categorizes some 300,000 artifacts recovered from the Bertrand in 1968, and also describes the invention, manufacture, marketing, distribution, and sale of these products and traces their route to the frontier mining camps of Montana Territory. The ship and its contents are a time capsule of mid-nineteenth-century America, rich with information about the history of industry, technology, and commerce in the Trans-Missouri West. In addition to enumerating the items the boat was transporting to Montana, and offering a photographic sample of the merchandise, Switzer places the Bertrand itself in historical context, examining its intended use and the technology of light-draft steam-driven river craft. His account of steamboat commerce provides multiple insights into the industrial revolution in the East, the nature and importance of Missouri River commerce in the mid-1800s, and the decline in this trade after the Civil War. Switzer also introduces the people associated with the Bertrand. He has unearthed biographical details illuminating the private and social lives of the officers, crew members, and passengers, as well as the consignees to whom the cargo was being shipped. He offers insight into not only the passengers' reasons for traveling to the frontier mining camps of Montana Territory, but also the careers of some of the entrepreneurs and political movers and shakers of the Upper Missouri in the 1860s. This unique reference for historians of commerce in the American West will also fascinate anyone interested in the technology and history of riverine transport.

What Is a Western? - Region, Genre, Imagination (Paperback): Josh Garrett-Davis What Is a Western? - Region, Genre, Imagination (Paperback)
Josh Garrett-Davis; Foreword by Patricia Nelson Limerick
R696 Discovery Miles 6 960 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

There's "western", and then there's "Western" - and where history becomes myth is an evocative question, one of several questions posed by Josh Garrett-Davis in What Is a Western? Region, Genre, Imagination. Part cultural criticism, part history, and wholly entertaining, this series of essays on specific films, books, music, and other cultural texts brings a fresh perspective to long-studied topics. Under Garrett-Davis's careful observation, cultural objects such as films and literature, art and artifacts, and icons and oddities occupy the terrain of where the West as region meets the Western genre. One crucial through line in the collection is the relationship of regional "western" works to genre "Western" works, and the ways those two categories cannot be cleanly distinguished - most work about the West is tinted by the Western genre, and Westerns depend on the region for their status and power. Garrett-Davis also seeks to answer the question "What is a Western now?" To do so, he brings the Western into dialogue with other frameworks of the "imagined West" such as Indigenous perspectives, the borderlands, and environmental thinking. The book's mosaic of subject matter includes new perspectives on the classic musical film Oklahoma!, a consideration of Native activism at Standing Rock, and surprises like Pee-wee's Big Adventure and Dr. Seuss's The Lorax. The book is influenced by the borderlands theory of Gloria Anzaldua and the work of the indie rock band Calexico, as well as the author's own discipline of western cultural history. Richly illustrated, primarily from the collection of the Autry Museum of the American West, Josh Garrett-Davis's work is as visually interesting as it is enlightening, asking readers to consider the American West in new ways.

Museum expert Rachel Morris had been ignoring the boxes under her bed for decades. When she finally opened them, an entire bohemian family history was laid bare. The experience was revelatory - searching for her absent father in the archives of the Tate; understanding the loss and longings of the grandmother who raised her - and transported her back to the museums that had enriched her lonely childhood. By teasing out the stories of those early museum makers, and the unsung daughters and wives behind them, and seeing the same passions and mistakes reflected in her own family, Morris digs deep into the human instinct for collection and curation. Part memoir, part detective story, part untold history of museums - this is a fascinating and moving family story.

Vintage Home is both a practical collector' s guide - what to look out for - and a celebration of the period. It covers both serious and costly designer creations, which sell in major auction houses worldwide, and cheerful mass-produced kitsch, which you can pick up in car boot sales, charity shops, flea markets and yard sales. It looks at objects from around the world that were made for every taste and budget. Designers in the twentieth century were driven by the possibilities of mass-production and excited by the host of new materials. The period is also infused with the importance of women after the First World War and the emergence of a youth culture, and the new market for modern, fashionable goods from the 1950s onward. Where the older generation were used to ' make do and mend' , the young embraced wholeheartedly the disposable society. They replaced the old with something new and fashionable, a taste epitomised by colourful plastic furniture and paper dresses. The consequence is a fabulous array of every type of object for the collector.
