Adolescent females experience a variety of blood disorders that are often unique to this patient population. As they go through puberty, they are uniquely poised to encounter various bleeding and thrombotic disorders once they attain menarche, start to have menstrual bleeding, and require hormonal therapy. This may in turn lead to other medical conditions, such as anemia and iron deficiency. Pregnancy encountered by some adolescents can pose hematologic challenges specifically in regards to bleeding and thrombotic disorders. In addition, adolescent females are at risk to develop immune mediated hematologic disorders, such as immune thrombocytopenia, auto-immune hemolytic anemia, and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, as well as vitamin deficiencies due to pernicious anemia. Sickle cell disease, thalassemia and bone marrow failure disorders in the adolescent female poses unique challenges that need to be addressed with special care and attention. Knowledge about these various blood disorders in adolescent females is crucial for the treating physician in order to accurately diagnose and optimally manage these teenagers. Otherwise, it can affect their overall health, causing hematologic and gynecologic issues, poor quality of life, neurocognitive impairments, and poor psycho-social development, all of which can lead to various complications immediately and into adulthood. This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the art overview of blood disorders in female adolescents. The text presents new data about bleeding disorders that affect the female adolescent, including bleeding disorders, thromboembolism, thrombophilia, anemia, sickle cell disease and thalassemia, disorders od hemostasis and thrombosis in pregnancy, immune hematology and bone marrow failure disorders; reviews our current understanding of these disorders; outlines recent research findings; and spotlights multi-disciplinary approaches, evaluation and treatment modalities to combat these blood disorders. Written by experts in the field, Hematology in the Adolescent Female is a valuable resource for clinicians and practitioners who treat and manage female adolescents with blood disorders.

This book describes the pathogenesis and treatment of several representative hematological disorders in children, with a special focus on genetic and molecular aspects. Research on the pathogenesis of hematological disorders in children has made remarkable strides; especially molecular target therapy has shown outstanding effects in refractory and conventional therapies for childhood leukemia. The findings presented in this book will broaden readers' understanding and hopefully spark new discussions leading to the development of new therapies including cell therapy and molecular target therapy, allowing clinicians to use more effective and less toxic approaches in the future. Hematological Disorders in Children will appeal to a wide readership, from medical students and beginning investigators to experienced scholars in the field of pediatric hematology and oncology seeking to broaden their understanding and keep up with the latest developments. It will also be of interest to the parents of pediatric patients, and to co-medical staffs.
This major new comprehensive guide focuses on particular topics in the field of nutritional anemias, with in-depth coverage on each relevant nutrient whose deficiency can cause anemia, their metabolism, dietary requirements and related information. This book presents the unique hematological, and non-hematological, manifestations of each deficiency, the varied settings and causes of deficiency, interactions with other problems, diagnostic approaches and tools, synthesizing the perspectives of epidemiology, public health, and clinical hematology. Covering approaches to medical management in individuals, as well as in susceptible populations such as children, pregnant women and the elderly; and preventive strategies, such as supplementation and fortification, this exceptional text will appeal to a wide audience, from the clinician learning about the epidemiology and public health aspects of food fortification, to the public health practitioner who needs to understand clinical approaches to key nutritional anemia issues.
Sickle cell and thalassaemia are among the world's most common genetic conditions. They are especially common in Africa, Brazil, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Asia. They affect all ethnic groups but they particularly impact on minority ethnic groups in North America, Europe and Australasia. Much research has focused on clinical, laboratory and genetic studies of these conditions. Through a wide-ranging selection of readings based on social scientific research into sickle cell and thalassaemia, this book seeks to redress this imbalance. This is important as, through an examination of the different social, economic and cultural contexts of the lives of people living with sickle cell or thalassaemia, the contributors demonstrate that people are more than the sum of their genes and that their life experiences are rarely derived solely from the clinical severity of their condition but depend on the social context of their lives. Genetics and Global Public Health presents a new concluding chapter which highlights the critical nature of social science research for sickle cell and thalassaemia communities, providing key insights into the social contexts of human behaviour and analysing how societal arrangements could change to assist people living with either condition. It will be of great interest to postgraduate and research students as well as professionals working in the field of public health. This book was originally published as a special issue of the journal Ethnicity and Health.
