With 23 years of publishing this guide under their belts, South African Decor & Design 2020 are equally proud of all that has been and excited about all that is still to come. The Guide has grown progressively over the years with the recent launch of their new website, the establishment of their digital platforms, and the ever-popular blog ‘Marcia Loves It’ collectively facilitating positive change through innovation and creativity. Once again they have compiled a remarkable directory of over 3000 key industry players, home décor specialists, interior designers, architects and lifestyle brands.
The Guide continues to facilitate networks between industry players and provide inspiration and valuable information to all their readers. As well as offering the latest trend inspiration, newest product collections and optimal brands, they also strive to be at the forefront of international exhibitions, events and shows, while embracing the rise of the social and digital spheres.
The choice of cover this year was inspired by all that is good about living in South Africa. We so often forget about the beauty of the country and are so inundated daily by all the negatives that go with living here that they wanted to create a shout out for all the reasons why we do live here. Credit goes to photographer extraordinaire DOOK for creating that exact image to portray their theme.

The Real Interior not only allows the reader a behind-the-scenes peek into the glitz and glamour of design and décor, but into a career once never considered an option for a young girl, born in Soweto.
As one of the first black and very recognisable faces of Interior Design in Africa, Nthabi Taukobong was thrust into the limelight from the very start of her profession. Spanning a career of more than 23 years she has worked on esteemed residential and leisure projects for presidents, African royalty, captains of industry and five-star hotels, to name but a few. Through the rough and often very challenging terrain of her chosen career, sprinkled generously with the high-end glamour of prestigious interiors that Nthabi has been privileged to work on, she learned that she, in fact, had to be seated right within her own interior before she could offer anything further to those in search of her creative gift.
And as she searched and explored the greater world of design, trying to grasp what it really took to be an esteemed designer, the journey unexpectedly brought her right back into her own home. Not only Nthabi’s physical home, but also to her inner-home, the place that she refers to as her ‘real interior’. It was in writing a letter one evening, congratulating herself on reaching the milestone of 21 years in her career, that Nthabi discovered she was not only writing to herself, but to every creative.
Her letter ended up being an entire book and Nthabi finally understood how her unique story could inspire and encourage others.
An essential guide for those dealing with the Cape Water Crisis and for general water saving in South and southern Africa, a notoriously water-scarce region.
Three provinces in South Africa have been declared national disaster zones because of drought. The way we think about water needs to change, and fast. This is especially true for those of us who have running water and flush sanitation piped into our homes. For millions of South Africans, water is already a precious resource that costs toil to collect and fuel to heat. Our middle-class expectations that water will gush steaming from our dozens of indoor taps 24/7 are going to look as bizarre to future generations as the spectacle of Cleopatra bathing in asses’ milk. Our Roman-orgy relationship with water is over.
This book will hopefully help to alleviate water panic and distress. A “can-do” compendium, it’s meant to be a guide, not prescriptive – not all solutions or tips are one-size-fits-all. Think of it as an ally in your fight to save water and part of your survival kit, along with the first-aid box; Valium for water-worriers.

The treehouse in its most simple and fundamental form enables us to escape from the everyday pressures of modern life and feel closer to nature. It can also be an architectural wonder, showcasing the most creative of small space design and engineering solutions. This beautiful book shows how the treehouse can be many things: from simple structures based on centuries-old woodworking skills to modern geodesic forms strung high up above the treeline. There is something magical about treehouses - whatever your age. These boltholes perched above the ground appeal to those of us who want to get close to nature without forgoing any creature comforts... there are treehouses with wood-burning stoves, some with copper baths and some with elevated linking walkways obscured by the canopy of trees above. Then there are the handmade simple structures using recycled materials and the branches of the trees for both internal and external support and design. There are also free-standing structures on stilts inspired by the physical tree but not attached in any way. The book offers both visual inspiration from the specially commissioned photography but also the human stories behind the creation and design of these treehouses. The text covers topics such as the plan, structure, materials and decoration, colour palette and texture, and style notes to bring to life the personal and interesting story behind each treehouse featured in the book.

Sheds are no longer neglected buildings at the end of the garden. As shown in this book, they have become an area of our home to be discovered by creative designers who see the garden as an extendable space of the home, whether in the heart of the city or in a larger rural setting. Today's sheds are stylish, innovative and elegant and can be used for a multitude of purposes. They can be artists' studios, writers' retreats, children's playgrounds or teenage dens, entertaining spaces, log cabins or garden rooms, or even just a traditional humble shed used for storage and plants but revamped with more stylish and decorated overtones. Using over 50 real examples from around the world, some simple and modest and some really extravagant, this book helps inspire and instruct the reader on how to create your own special space. The owners themselves describe how they have created their own private hideaways and Jane Field-Lewis provides insightful style notes and comments based on her conversations with the owners, architects and designers. She tells you how to create your shed depending on how you want to use it, and then how to make it stylish as well as useful. An intrinsic part of their charm is that normal decorating rules don't apply and this gives the owners the freedom to express themselves in a different way without necessarily following any fashion or trends. Recycled, vintage and precious items are mixed with new, functional and practical ones. Jane Field-Lewis covers all these aspects in a warm-hearted way. The stunning photographs are accompanied by informative captions to help the reader design and decorate their shed on a more practical level. This is the book to help you create an inspiring space. The powerful aesthetic and philosophical framework that modernism ushered in during the early part of the 20th century revolutionized the built world, transformed our living spaces and lifestyles, and fundamentally changed the way we think about design. As they experimented with new forms, materials and techniques, modernist designers rejected historical precedents to prioritize function over history and tradition. This ambitious survey brings together all facets and all scales of design in a comprehensive volume that presents the vast breadth of both towering and lesserknown figures, revealing unexpected connections and new insights. Through sections on furniture, lighting, glass, ceramics, textiles, industrial and product design, graphic design and posters, architecture and interiors, and through profiles of nearly a hundred influential creators, including iconic figures, such as Bruno Mathsson, Charlotte Perriand and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, as well as architects Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Eliel Saarinen and Walter Gropius, the book's scope is unprecedented. Complete with specially commissioned essays by established academics and subject specialists, and with nearly 650 illustrations, the majority in colour, this book is set to become the definitive reference for a generation, equally indispensible for the designer's studio, the library shelves or the collector's desk.
