'An orchard is not a field. It's not a forest or a copse. It couldn't occur naturally; it's definitely cultivated. But an orchard doesn't override the natural order: it enhances it, dresses it up. It demonstrates that man and nature together can - just occasionally - create something more beautiful and (literally) more fruitful than either could alone. The vivid brightness of the laden trees, studded with jewels, stirs some deep race memory and makes the heart leap. Here is bounty, and excitement.'

Biodynamic, Organic and Natural Winemaking - Sustainable Viticulture and Viniculture (Paperback): Britt Karlsson, Per Karlsson Biodynamic, Organic and Natural Winemaking - Sustainable Viticulture and Viniculture (Paperback)

"We constantly notice when we are out talking to winemakers in different wine regions that more and more producers pay attention to how what they do in the vineyard affects the environment. Many winemakers that we meet start the process of 'converting' to organic farming. There are rules for what that means -- what an organic farmer can do and what is forbidden -- rules that come both from public or government organisations and from private organisations. In addition, people also talk more and more about other related approaches: biodynamic winemaking, natural wines, sustainable farming. In this book we explain them all." Organic farming, biodynamic wine, natural wines, sustainable winemaking: what do all these concepts really mean, and what benefits can they bring to winemakers? This comprehensive book by two renowned wine experts explains the rules, the do's and don't's of organic, biodynamic and natural wine production, both outside in the vineyard and in the wine cellar. It sets out clearly what a winemaker is allowed to do, including processes, additives and chemicals, and looks at the potential long-term benefits of going organic or biodynamic. This is an invaluable introduction to sustainable winemaking for all wine professionals and enthusiasts. Winner of the 'Best Wine Book for Professionals 2012' in Sweden and the 'World's Best Drinks (wine) Education Book', runner-up, 2012.

"A brilliantly readable account of double flowers, exploring everything from their many varieties to their biological development, their long history in our gardens and the powerful emotional responses they elicit. This supremely researched book will leave you appreciating double flowers as never before." - Stephen Blackmore, Queen's Botanist and former Regius Keeper of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh With charms extending from the romantic allure of double roses and the attention-grabbing flamboyance of double tulips to the exquisite perfection of tiny double primroses, double flowers are among the most loved of our garden plants. Double Flowers is the first popular handbook to explore them in depth. Double flowers are simply flowers with a greater than normal number of petals or petal-like structures. They occur spontaneously in the wild and can also be selected and bred. This superbly illustrated guide - begun by bestselling garden writer Nicola Ferguson before her death in 2007, and completed by Charles Quest-Ritson - celebrates some of the many thousands of beautiful double flowers produced throughout history. The book examines how doubles have arisen; how they are constructed; how and where they will flourish; their particular appeal and how best to place them in the garden; and the advantages and disadvantages of such flowers - for gardeners, for flower-arrangers and for wildlife.

The Cadogan Estate in Chelsea is one of the few remaining ancient family estates in London, covering one of the capital's most dynamic, thriving and fashionable districts. The foundations of the Cadogan Estate were established in 1717 when Charles, 2nd Baron Cadogan married the daughter of Sir Hans Sloane, who had purchased the Manor of Chelsea in 1712. This lavish book celebrates the family's 300-year stewardship of the Estate, which continues in the hands of the present Viscount Chelsea who succeeded his father, Earl Cadogan as group chairman in 2012. Beautifully illustrated, this collection of essays by expert commentators looks at the history and lineage of this noble family and the formation of the Estate as we know it today, focusing on the architectural and horticultural heritage that has shaped the built environment of the area, the economic and social impact of the two world wars, twentieth-century arts and culture, pioneering fashion trends and the changing face of retail in Chelsea. Today the Estate is home to London's most glamorous and dynamic locations for retail, fashion and culture attracting a global clientele, yet continuing to invest and promote in local, independent business and culture.

Garden Variety - The American Tomato from Corporate to Heirloom (Hardcover): John Hoenig Garden Variety - The American Tomato from Corporate to Heirloom (Hardcover)

Chopped in salads, scooped up in salsa, slathered on pizza and pasta, squeezed onto burgers and fries, and filling aisles with roma, cherry, beefsteak, on-the-vine, and heirloom: where would American food, fast and slow, high and low, be without the tomato? The tomato is representative of the best and worst of American cuisine: though the plastic-looking corporate tomato is the hallmark of industrial agriculture, the tomato's history also encompasses farmers' markets and home gardens. Garden Variety illuminates American culinary culture from 1800 to the present, challenging a simple story of mass-produced homogeneity and demonstrating the persistence of diverse food cultures throughout modern America. John Hoenig explores the path by which, over the last two centuries, the tomato went from a rare seasonal crop to America's favorite vegetable. He pays particular attention to the noncorporate tomato. During the twentieth century, as food production, processing, and distribution became increasingly centralized, the tomato remained the king of the vegetable garden and, in recent years, has become the centerpiece of alternative food cultures. Reading seed catalogs, menus, and cookbooks, and following the efforts of cooks and housewives to find new ways to prepare and preserve tomatoes, Hoenig challenges the extent to which branding, advertising, and marketing dominated twentieth-century American life. He emphasizes the importance of tomatoes to numerous immigrant groups and their influence on the development of American food cultures. Garden Variety highlights the limits on corporations' ability to shape what we eat, inviting us to rethink the history of our foodways and to take on our opportunity to expand the palate of American cuisine.

Find out more about natural wine-made naturally from organically or biodynamically grown grapes - from leading authority Isabelle Legeron MW. Wine-making has become ever-more unnatural, from the use of blanket crop-spraying in vineyards, to the over-use of sulfites and additives in the cellar, but luckily there is another way, as Master of Wine Isabelle Legeron explains. Isabelle, who campaigns for natural wine around the world and runs the hugely successful RAW wine fairs in London, Berlin and New York, reveals why the finest, most authentic wines are those made naturally. While currently not regulated by an official definition, natural wines are made from sustainably farmed, organic (or biodynamic) grapes, with nothing removed or added during winemaking, bar at most a dash of sulfites. It is good old-fashioned grape juice fermented into wine - just as nature intended. If you care about what's in your glass, want to explore unique flavours, or are keen to support small-scale producers, then you need to know more about natural wine, and where to find it. The second edition of this consumer guide to natural wine has been fully updated, and explains the processes involved, introduces you to some of the growers, and suggests over 140 of the best wines for you to try. "A joyous celebration of all that Legeron believes is good and pure in the world of wine and wine production." TLS Shortlisted for the Andre Simon Food & Drink Awards 2015. the Fortnum and Mason Food & Drink Awards 2014, and the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers Awards 2015.

Welcome to your tour of the wine-growing world. Wine has rolled its barrel from the shores of the Black Sea to the mountains of the Andes, following humans and their dreams. But just how did a Pyrenean grape variety end up in Uruguay? And by what means were grapevines able to reach Japan?

This book goes back through time to retrace the grape s conquest of the world, stopping in each wine-making country, from the oldest (Georgia) to the most recent (Poland), to discover wines past and present, while looking to future producers in places such as Tahiti and Sweden.

The atlas works on a spread-by-spread basis. For each region there is a large-scale, specially drawn map, an overview of the area's history of wine production and a list of its main grape varieties, along with details of its world ranking in production volume, annual production, proportion of black and white grapes produced, month of the grape harvest, date of first viticulture (and which culture brought it) and suggestions of appelations to taste. The end section contains further statistics and information on grape varieties, characteristics and terroirs.

This large-scale publication, encompassing 56 countries, 100 maps and 8,000 years of wine history, is a tour de force in wine publishing.

This book demonstrates that such a spectacular example of catch-up goes beyond simply copying new technologies; it entails creative adaptation and innovation, and introduces a new growth trajectory in which consistent investments in research and science play a key role.
