THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE ICE-SKATING DUO WHO BECAME THE NATION'S FAVOURITES - NOW THE SUBJECT OF A MAJOR ITV BIOPIC. When Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean collapsed to the ice at the climax of their routine to Bolero in the 1984 Winter Olympics, the judges could find no fault, awarding them 12 maximum scores of 6.0, while 24 million viewers watching at home in Britain simply looked on in amazement. Suddenly, we were all experts in figure skating, and we wanted to know more about the couple at the heart of it all. Despite intense interest in them, Torvill & Dean kept their lives private, with many still wondering if the pair were really a couple. They turned professional and would eventually spend eight years working on ITV's Dancing on Ice, but still much of their story remained unknown. Now, in Our Life on Ice, Torvill & Dean finally open up about the challenges they have faced and the pressures of life in the public eye: Jayne speaks candidly about her struggle with husband Phil to have children, while Chris reveals the heartache in his family story. And of course, there is the skating, and the stories about what inspired their famous routines, and what the pair hope to achieve in the future as the approach their fortieth anniversary working together. It is the book their millions of fans have been waiting to read.

The previously-untold story of the life and tragic early death of John Curry, one of the most famous ice skaters in history. The book that inspired new film The Ice King, the story of John Curry's life. One winter's night in 1976, over 20 million people in Britain watched John Curry skate to Olympic gold on an ice rink in Austria. Many millions more watched around the world. Overnight he became one of the most famous men on the planet. He was awarded an OBE. He was chosen as BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Curry changed ice skating from marginal sport to high art. And yet the man was a mystery to a world that had been dazzled by his gift. Surely, men's skating was supposed to be Cossack-muscular, not sensual and ambiguous like this? Curry himself was a complex, tortured man. For the first time, Alone untangles the extraordinary web of his toxic, troubled, brilliant and short life. It is a story of childhood nightmares, furious ambition, sporting genius, lifelong rivalries, homophobia, Cold War politics, financial ruin and deep personal tragedy. So much more than a sports biography, Alone reveals the restless, impatient, often dark soul of a man whose words could lacerate, whose skating invariably moved audiences to tears, and who after succumbing to AIDS, as so many of his fellow artists and friends did, died of a heart attack aged just 44.
Though it s graceful and beautiful to watch, don t be fooled. Champion-level figure skaters are some of the strongest, most technically skilled athletes anywhere. Learn about this stylish sport and find out how the pros train Do you think you have what it takes to give it a try?"
Following in the tracks of "Laura Stamm's Power Skating, Third Rdition" - the best selling book of its kind - here comes a revised and fully updated new edition which looks set to overtake the current market leader in style. "Laura Stamm's Power Skating, Fourth Edition" provides all the essential techniques for increasing speed and agility on the ice as well as ensuring that skaters are fully au fait with recent rule changes in the game of ice hockey. With the emphasis on speed and agility now even greater, many new training methods and techniques are being taught to players at a much younger age. However, without due knowledge of the specific safety considerations, coaches risk doing more harm than good to these young skaters. Often the desire to attain speed and agility results in decreased puck control and poor balance. As a highly regarded and active instructor on the professional scene, Laura Stamm's unique power skating programme has evolved with the game. She has developed drills and other techniques to help improve speed, power and agility without neglecting the importance of ice hockey fundamentals. As ever, skills are presented in a progressive format beginning with the most basic drills and gradually increasing to the more complex. Modifications and variations accompany the more advanced drills to allow for safe execution by younger skaters.
Now there's a masterfully written guide that shows beginning and recreational skaters the fundamental skills of ice skating.

Figure skating has always had an important home in Lake Placid. Early on, the Sno Birds popularized this summer retreat, and Melville and Godfrey Dewey won the campaign for the 1932 Winter Olympics. The Skating Club of Lake Placid was formed, and after 1932, famous skaters trained here with legendary coach Gus Lussi. When Lake Placid again hosted the Olympics in 1980, skating dominated, with state-of-the-art facilities that have continued to be used by stars like Dorothy Hamill and Sarah Hughes, and helped give rise to Scott Hamilton's Stars on Ice. For more than one hundred years, the Lake Placid community has worked together to support figure skating and skaters in this quiet Adirondack village. Local expert Christie Sausa tells this exciting story.
