The CASC Workshops are traditionally held in turn in the Commonwealth of IndependentStates(CIS)andoutsideCIS(Germanyinparticular, but, attimes, also other countries with lively CA communities). The previous CASC Wo- shop was held in Japan, and the 12th workshop was held for the ?rst time in Armenia, which is one of the CIS republics. It should be noted that more than 35 institutes and scienti?c centers function within the National Academy of S- ences of Armenia (further details concerning the structure of the academy can be foundhttp://www. sci. am). These institutions are concerned, in particular, with problems in such branches of natural science as mathematics, informatics, physics, astronomy, biochemistry, etc. It follows from the talks presented at the previous CASC workshops that the methods and systems of computer algebra may be applied successfully in all the above-listed branches of natural sciences. Therefore, the organizers of the 12th CASC Workshop hope that the present workshop will help the Armenian scientists to become even more familiar with the capabilities of advanced computer algebra methods and systems and to get in touch with specialists in computer algebra from other countries. The 11 earlier CASC conferences, CASC 1998, CASC 1999, CASC 2000, CASC 2001, CASC 2002, CASC 2003, CASC 2004, CASC 2005, CASC 2006, CASC 2007, and CASC 2009 were held, respectively, in St. Petersburg (R- sia), Munich (Germany), Samarkand (Uzbekistan), Konstanz (Germany), Yalta (Ukraine), Passau (Germany), St.

On August 28, the attendees moved to Le Clos Luc'e-the last home of Leonardo da Vinci - where the 20th anniversary of the conference was celebrated. Theobjectiveofthe biennialSAB Conferenceis to bringtogether researchers incomputerscience, arti?cialintelligence, arti?ciallife, complexsystems, robotics, neurosciences, ethology, evolutionary biology, and related ?elds so as to further our understanding of the behaviors and underlying mechanisms that allow n- ural and arti?cial animals to adapt and survive in uncertain environments. Adaptive behavior research is distinguished by its focus on the modelling and creation of complete animal-like systems, which - however simple at the moment - may be one of the best routes to understanding intelligence in natural and arti?cial systems. The conference is part of a long series that started with the ?rst SAB Conference held in Paris in September 1990, which was followed by conferences in Honolulu 1992, Brighton 1994, Cape Cod 1996, Zu . .rich 1998, Paris 2000, Edinburgh 2002, Los Angeles 2004, Rome 2006 and Osaka 2008. In 1992, the MIT Press introduced the quarterly journal Adaptive Behavior, now publishedbySAGE Publications. TheestablishmentoftheInternationalSociety forAdaptiveBehavior(ISAB) in1995furtherunderlinedtheemergenceofad- tive behavior as a fully ?edged scienti?c discipline. The present proceedings are a comprehensive and up-to-date resource for the latest progress in this exciting ?eld.

This volume contains the papers selected for presentation at The 2010 Int- national Conference on Brain Informatics (BI 2010) held at York University, Toronto, Canada, during August 28-30, 2010. It was organized by the Web - telligenceConsortium(WIC),theIEEEComputationalIntelligenceSocietyTask Force on Brain Informatics (IEEE-CIS TF-BI), and York University. The c- ference washeld jointly with the 2010InternationalConference on Active Media Technology (AMT 2010). Brain informatics (BI) hasemergedasaninterdisciplinaryresearch?eld that focuses on studying the mechanisms underlying the human information proce- ing system (HIPS). It investigates the essential functions of the brain, ranging from perception to thinking, and encompassing such areas as multi-perception, attention, memory, language, computation, heuristic search, reasoning, pl- ning, decision-making, problem-solving, learning, discovery, and creativity. The goal of BI is to develop and demonstrate a systematic approach to achieving an integrated understanding of both macroscopic and microscopic-level working principles of the brain, by means of experimental, computational, and cognitive neuroscience studies, as well as utilizing advanced Web intelligence (WI)-centric information technologies. BI represents a potentially revolutionary shift in the way that research is undertaken. It attempts to capture new forms of colla- rative and interdisciplinary work. In this vision, new kinds of BI methods and global research communities will emerge, through infrastructure on the wisdom Web and knowledge grids that enable high-speed and distributed, large-scale analysis and computations, and radically new ways of sharing data/knowledge. Welcome to the proceedings of the 4th Workshop on Biomedical Image R- istration (WBIR). Previous WBIRs took place in Bled, Slovenia (1999), at the UniversityofPennsylvania,USA(2003)andinUtrecht,TheNetherlands(2006). This year, WBIR was hosted by the Institute Mathematics and Image Proce- ing and the Fraunhofer Project Group on Image Registration and it was held in Lub eck, Germany. It provided the opportunity to bring together researchers from all over the world to discuss some of the most recent advances in image registration and its applications. We had an excellent collection of papers that were reviewed by at least three reviewers each from a 35-member Program Committee assembled from a wor- wide community of registration experts. This year 17 papers were accepted for oral presentation, while another 7 papers were accepted as poster papers. We believe all of the conference papers were of excellent quality. Registration is a fundamental task in image processing used to match two or more pictures taken, for example, at di?erent times, from di?erent sensors, or from di?erent viewpoints. Establishing the correspondence of structures within medical images is fundamental to diagnosis, treatment planning, and surgical guidance. The conference papers address state-of-the-art techniques for prov- ing reliable and e?cient registration techniques, thereby imposing relationships between speci?c application areas and appropriate registration schemes. We are grateful to all those who contributed to the success of WBIR 2010.

The concept of CAST as Computer Aided Systems Theory was introduced by F. Pichler in the late 1980s to refer to computer theoretical and practical developments as tools for solving problems in system science. It was thought of as the third component (the other two being CAD and CAM) required to complete the path from computer and systems sciences to practical developments in science and engineering. Franz Pichler, of the University of Linz, organized the first CAST workshop in April 1988, which demonstrated the acceptance of the concepts by the scientific and technical community. Next, the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria joined the University of Linz to organize the first international meeting on CAST (Las Palmas, February 1989) under the name EUROCAST'89. This proved to be a very successful gathering of systems theorists, computer scientists and engineers from most European countries, North America and Japan. It was agreed that EUROCAST international conferences would be organized every two years, alternating between Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and a continental European location. From 2001 the conference has been held exclusively in Las Palmas. Thus, successive EUROCAST meetings took place in Krems (1991), Las Palmas (1993), In- bruck (1995), Las Palmas (1997), Vienna (1999), Las Palmas (2001), Las Palmas (2003) Las Palmas (2005) and Las Palmas (2007), in addition to an extra-European CAST c- ference in Ottawa in 1994.

Imagine mathematics, imagine with the help of mathematics, imagine new worlds, new geometries, new forms. Imagine building mathematical models that make it possible to manage our world better, imagine solving great problems, imagine new problems never before thought of, imagine combining music, art, poetry, literature, architecture, theatre and cinema with mathematics. Imagine the unpredictable and sometimes counterintuitive applications of mathematics in all areas of human endeavour. This seventh volume starts with a homage to the Italian artist Mimmo Paladino who created exclusively for the Venice Conference 2019 ten original and unique works of art paper dedicated to the themes of the meeting. A large section is dedicated to the most recent Fields Medals including a Homage to Maryam Mirzakhani including a presentation of the exhibition on soap bubbles in art and science that took place in 2019. A section is dedicated to cinema and theatre including the performances by Claire Bardainne & Adrien Mondot. A part of the conference focused on the community of mathematicians, their role in literature and even in politics with the extraordinary example of Antanas Mockus Major of Bogota. Mathematics in the constructions of bridges, in particular in Italy in the Sixties was presented by Tullia Iori. A very particular contribution on Origami by a mathematician, Marco Abate and an artist, Alessandro Beber. And many other topics. As usual the topics are treated in a way that is rigorous but captivating, detailed and full of evocations. This is an all-embracing look at the world of mathematics and culture. The world, life, culture, everything has changed in a few weeks with the Coronavirus. Culture, science are the main ways to safeguard people's physical and social life. Trust in humanity's creativity and ability. The motto today in Italy is Everything will be fine. This work is addressed to all those who have an interest in Mathematics.

R1,169 Discovery Miles 11 690 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

Modern blockbuster movies seamlessly introduce impossible characters and action into real-world settings using digital visual effects. These effects are made possible by research from the field of computer vision, the study of how to automatically understand images. Computer Vision for Visual Effects will educate students, engineers, and researchers about the fundamental computer vision principles and state-of-the-art algorithms used to create cutting-edge visual effects for movies and television. The author describes classical computer vision algorithms used on a regular basis in Hollywood (such as blue screen matting, structure from motion, optical flow, and feature tracking) and exciting recent developments that form the basis for future effects (such as natural image matting, multi-image compositing, image retargeting, and view synthesis). He also discusses the technologies behind motion capture and three-dimensional data acquisition. More than 200 original images demonstrating principles, algorithms, and results, along with in-depth interviews with Hollywood visual effects artists, tie the mathematical concepts to real-world filmmaking.

Kate Nash
R951 Discovery Miles 9 510 Ships in 10 - 20 work days

Tracing continuities in digital and documentary practices, this book is a study of interactive documentary from the perspective of documentary culture. Exploring the dizzying array of new documentary forms that have emerged in the past ten years, the book is grounded in the analysis of multiple recent examples of digital documentary work, drawing out the key issues that the work raises. These issues provide a starting point for theoretical reflection, with each chapter developing concepts and frameworks to facilitate thinking with and through interactive documentary. The book explores questions of polyvocality, participation, and political voice, as well as the sociality and performativity of digital documentary practice. By thinking deeply and critically about interactive documentary practice, the book charts the many and various ways in which interactive documentaries claim the real - contingently, partially, or, in some cases, collectively. Each chapter draws on a range of examples - from digital games to data visualisations, database documentaries to virtual reality - demonstrating how we might engage with these 'unstable' digital texts. The book will be particularly valuable for students and researchers keen to make connections between documentary and digital media scholarship.
