Originally published in Dutch and translated to Spanish for the fourth centenary celebration of the death of El Greco in 2014, this book is a comprehensive study of the rediscovery of El Greco -- seen as one of the most important events of its kind in art history. The Nationalization of Culture versus the Rise of Modern Art analyses how changes in artistic taste in the second half of the nineteenth century caused a profound revision of the place of El Greco in the artistic canon. As a result, El Greco was transformed from an extravagant outsider and a secondary painter into the founder of the Spanish School and one of the principle predecessors of modern art, increasingly related to that of the Impressionists -- due primarily to the German critic Julius Meier-Graefe's influential History of Modern Art (1914). This shift in artistic preference has been attributed to the rise of modern art but Eric Storm, a cultural historian, shows that in the case of El Greco nationalist motives were even more important. This study examines the work of painters, art critics, writers, scholars and philosophers from France, Germany and Spain, and the role of exhibitions, auctions, monuments and commemorations. Paintings and associated anecdotes are discussed, and historical debates such as El Greco's supposed astigmatism are addressed in a highly readable and engaging style. This book will be of interest to both specialists and the interested art public.

Hokusai: the blue, foam-crested wave rearing above Mount Fuji; the celebrated volcano idealized and reinventedby the artist in every nuance of view, season and painting; extraordinary bridges, the waterfalls of Japan, the contortions, costumes, gestures – the very breath of men, women, peasants, townsmen, warriors, artisans, leaping horses, birds, insects, fish, almost live on the ground on which they are painted – the countless imaginative drawings or the lively sketches done on the spot for the Manga, Hokusai’s record of shapes and forms drawn from life or imagined over time. With a body of work comprising more than 30,000 drawings and paintings, Hokusai (1760–1849) was the most prolific, varied and indisputably the most creative artist of old Japan. A universal genius in everything that constituted drawing and painting in his time, he practised all genres of ukiyo-e, those ‘images of the floating world’, as his contemporaries liked to describe their pleasures and their daily life.

This book traces the career of this child from a working-class district of old Tokyo, then known as Edo, evoking the special atmosphere of this great city and of Japanese life, when Japan – closed to foreigners – developed in a vacuum a powerfully original culture. Hokusai became one of the great masters of the woodcut, this ‘brush gone wild’, as he called himself, being rediscovered by the Impressionists and aesthetes at the end of the 19th century. He remains one of the greatest and – thanks to his personality – one of the most attractive figures of world art.

Lucian Freud was one of the world's greatest realist artists. Working only from life, he once claimed, `I could never put anything into a picture that wasn't there in front of me.' This revelatory publication features a selection of beautifully reproduced images from his sketchbooks. Most of the sketches - which include works in pencil, pastel and watercolour from across the artist's long career - are published here for the first time. These fascinating images extend our understanding of Freud's work and demonstrate the scrutiny he brought to his subjects. The sketchbooks, now in the archive of the National Portrait Gallery, London, include portraits of Freud's family members, friends and lovers. Designs for book covers, images of his beloved dogs and horses, landscapes and interiors appear among nudes, still lifes and several sketches that relate to major works. Around and between the drawings are Freud's annotations and jottings - appointments, racing tips, notes, musings - which, with startling immediacy, provide a glimpse into the working life of one of the twentieth century's most important artists. The book includes an insightful essay by Martin Gayford, who sat for portraits by Freud and knew him well, and an illustrated chronology of the artist's life.

'ON and BY Andy Warhol' is an epic achievement. Gilda Williams has collected what seems like every word ever written about or uttered by the most influential artist of our time to produce a verbal collage portrait that is bold, revealing, multi-dimensional and original. If Andy were alive, he would probably say, "Oh, wow. Why didn't I think of that?" -- Bob Colacello, special correspondent, Vanity Fair. Author of Holy Terror: Andy Warhol Close Up and former Editor, Interview magazine. The impact of Andy Warhol on contemporary culture is incalculable. A pioneer in virtually every media in which he worked, Warhol also had a lesser-known hand in such contemporary staples as reality TV, computer art, and the rock-gig light show. In the wake of dedicated Twitter feeds today that easily adapt his short epithets or 'Warholisms' into 140-character snippets, Andy Warhol's cultural relevance seems only to grow in the 21st century.Edited and introduced by art critic Gilda Williams, ON&BY Andy Warhol brings together generations of notable writers who have examined the influence and legacy of Warhol's life and work: art critics including Douglas Crimp, Thomas Crow, Dave Hickey, Hal Foster and Lucy Lippard; artists Art & Language and Donald Judd; philosophers and cultural theorists including Arthur C. Danto, Fredric Jameson and Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick; and, more recently, novelists such as Saul Anton.Alongside accounts from Factory associates Bob Colacello and Mary Woronov, and recent revelations from Warhol Museum senior archivist Matt Wrbican, are critical assessments by Callie Angell, Rainer Crone, Anthony Huberman, Stephen Koch, Wayne Koestenbaum and Simon Watney amongst others; and further writings by Warhol (and his collaborators) such as THE Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again), Blue Movie, POPism, America, Andy Warhol's Party Book and The Andy Warhol Diaries, as well as interviews with Gretchen Berg and Alfred Hitchcock.

Lord Hastings's journal of his travels from Calcutta to the Punjab in 1814-1815 records the events and views of this journey accompanied by 200 large watercolour illustrations by Sita Ram. This book includes an edited version of the journal charting his passage through the India of the early nineteenth century. Though Sita Ram's picturesque paintings were a sharp departure from the accurate `Company' views of Indian monuments, they nonetheless revealed his eye for architectural detail. Taking the readers along as part of Lord Hastings's party, J. P. Losty brings alive the seventeen- month long expedition in a flotilla of 220 boats from Barrackpore past Patna, Benares, Allahabad and Cawnpore, and then overland to Lucknow, Delhi and the Punjab, through Sita Ram's never-before-published paintings of Colonial India.

Martin Puryear's enduring approach has galvanized his art for more than five decades: issues of democracy, identity, and liberty have long propelled him. Readers of this volume will learn how an artist's handling of a symbolic but vital human subject- namely, liberty-can be best expressed in sculptural form through a visual language of great originality and certitude. Liberty / Liberta, published on the occasion of the artist's exhibition in the United States Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, focuses on significant new work. In addition to extensive illustrations of recent work and new sculptures made for the Biennale, including monumental outdoor sculpture, the book features major texts by Darby English, Tobi Haslett, U.S. Commissioner Brooke Kamin Rapaport, and Anne M. Wagner. With a definitive illustrated chronology of the artist's career over the last fifty years, Liberty / Liberta is an essential study of this esteemed American artist.

The second in a unique series of anthologies which collects key writings by and on the most significant artists in contemporary culture. Influencing a whole generation of artists, musicians and theorists, since the late 1970s Christian Marclay has explored the interplay between sound, audio cultures and art across a diversity of media: performance, sculpture, photography, collage, musical composition, film, video and installation. Born in 1955, Marclay first became internationally known in the 1980s for his sculptures and reassembled readymades generated from evocative materials such as fragmented vinyl records or album covers. His ambitious multi-screen installations such as Video Quartet (2002), Crossfire (2007) and The Clock (2010) have entranced audiences into contemplating the complexities of time and narrative and the role of sound in their experience and representation. Marclay has also collaborated musically with Shelley Hirsch, the Kronos Quartet, Zeena Parkins, Elliott Sharp, Sonic Youth and John Zorn, among many others. Edited by curator and critic Jean-Pierre Criqui, this volume brings together the artist's statements and conversations with Bice Curiger, Jan Estep, Russell Ferguson, Kim Gordon, Douglas Kahn, Frances Richard, Philip Sherburne, Michael Snow, Lars Soederkvist, David Toop and Philip von Zweck. Writings on all aspects of Marclay's work are provided by Clement Cheroux, Dennis Cooper, Christoph Cox, Jean-Pierre Criqui, Noam M. Anselm Kiefer, born in 1945, is one of the most important and controversial artists at work in the world today. Through such diverse mediums as painting, photography, artists books, installations, and sculpture, he has interpreted the great political and cultural issues at the heart of the modern European sensibility: the connections between memory, history, and mythology; war; the Holocaust; and ethnic and national identity. In this extensively illustrated, thoughtful survey of his work, available again in a new and compact format, author Daniel Arasse analyzes Kiefer s education, influences, philosophy, and art, while demonstrating the unity and continuity of his work. Arasse takes as his starting point the 1980 Venice Biennale, a key moment in Kiefer s career that marked the birth of both his international reputation and the controversy over the strong focus on German civilization that characterized much of his work. Equal parts eloquent tribute and respected monograph, Anselm Kiefer is organized both chronologically and to reflect the artist s recurrent motifs, including Nordic and Germanic mythologies, Jewish mysticism, the cosmos, the legends of the ancient world, and many more. Approximately 250 full-color images reproduce his art at the highest possible quality, to trace Kiefer s creative evolution and reveal as fully as possible his works scope and power."

The reader is taken on an exploration of Kiefer's ateliers around the world, from the attic of a former school and a disused brickyard in Germany, via ateliers in the rural south of France and the urban setting of the Marais in Paris, to his current studio in Croissy-Beaubourg on the outskirts of the capital. The first in a unique series of anthologies which collects key writings by and on the most significant artists in contemporary culture. Luc Tuymans is one of the most influential figurative painters working today. Born in 1958 and based in Antwerp, he has exhibited since 1985, emerging internationally in the early 1990s as an artist who has addressed not just the continuation of painting's relevance but subjects as difficult to represent as the long-lasting traumas of war, colonialism and everyday violence. Tuymans has also been a filmmaker, a curator of his own art and its context, an exhibitor of other artists past and present, and an eloquent writer on his work and that of the image-makers, thinkers and authors who affect him. His pictures are ghosted by language, always in a relationship with their precisely considered titles and the constant articulation of reflections on their themes and ideas. Edited by the historian and publisher Peter Ruyffelaere and with an introduction by critic and curator Adrian Searle, this volume collects Tuymans' writings on his own and others' images, from Van Eyck, Velazquez and El Greco to Edouard Manet, Giorgio Morandi, Hans-Jurgen Syberberg, Chris Marker, Neo Rauch, Paul McCarthy and Jeff Wall. It includes dialogues with Tuymans' artist contemporaries Ai Weiwei, Kerry James Marshall and Wilhelm Sasnal, interviews with Daniel Birnbaum, Martin Herbert, Jean-Paul Jungo, Udo Kittelmann, Luk Lambrecht, Wim Peeters, Kara Rooney and Yasmine Chtchourova-Van Pee, and writings on the artist's central works and ideas by Montserrat Albores Gleason, Laura Hoptman, Joseph Leo Koerner, Takashi Murakami, Philippe Pirotte, Adrian Searle and Pablo Sigg.

In 1999, Rick Rohde, a Research Fellow of the Centre of African Studies at the University of Edinburgh, joined a long-term research project in the village of Paulshoek in Namaqualand, the aim of which was to understand and record the socio-economic and environmental history of the area. Some residents of Paulshoek were invited to contribute to the project through a photographic documentation of the life of the village. One of these photographers was Sophia Klaase, whose striking images of her family and friends became the subject of an exhibition fourteen years later.

Klaase’s images stood out for their intense and idiosyncratic representation of life in a materially impoverished community, and for their frank exploration of Klaase’s own relationship to her environment. Her photographs and this book demonstrate the intellectual and aesthetic rewards of true collaboration and sustained investigation, and introduce a new name into the tradition of South African documentary and vernacular photography. Klaase’s work is the cornerstone of this richly layered study of Paulshoek and its environs.

Richard Diebenkorn (1922-1993) is celebrated as an American Master in his native United States, particularly on the West Coast, where he lived and worked for much of his career. Highly sensitive to his environment, Diebenkorn used a palette and colour composition influenced by the light and location of his studios and the geographic environments in which he worked: whether abstract or figurative, his works powerfully evoke the Californian coast from San Francisco to Los Angeles. This volume is a focused exploration of his ever- changing, always compelling career across four decades, and his shifts in style and subject-matter in both painting and works on paper. It covers the three distinct periods of his career, which saw him gain recognition as a leading abstract expressionist in the early 1950s, then turn his attention to figurative painting, before, in 1967, embarking on a long and highly successful period of abstract paintings and drawings, known as the Ocean Park Series.

The first biography of America's greatest twentieth-century sculptor. In this beautifully written, deeply researched book Jed Perl shows how Alexander Calder became an avant-garde artist with enduring appeal. One of our most beloved modern artists, Calder is celebrated above all as the inventor of the mobile. Only now is the full story of his life being told in a gloriously illustrated biography, which features unseen photographs and is based on scores of interviews and unprecedented access to Calder's papers. Born into a family of artists, Calder forged important friendships with a who's who of twentieth-century masters, including Joan Miro, Marcel Duchamp, Georges Braque, and Piet Mondrian. His early years studying engineering were followed by artistic triumphs in Paris in the late 1920s, and his emergence as a leader in the international abstract avant-garde. His marriage in 1931 to Louisa James-- a great-niece of Henry James--is a richly romantic story. This transatlantic life carries readers from New York's Greenwich Village, to the Left Bank of Paris during the Depression, and then to a refugee-filled London just before the War, where Calder's circle of friends included Barbara Hepworth, Ben Nicholson and Kenneth Clark.

A collection of essential quotations and other writings from artist and icon Jean-Michel Basquiat One of the most important artists of the late twentieth century, Jean-Michel Basquiat explored the interplay of words and images throughout his career as a celebrated painter with an instantly recognizable style. In his paintings, notebooks, and interviews, he showed himself to be a powerful and creative writer and speaker as well as image-maker. Basquiat-isms is a collection of essential quotations from this godfather of urban culture. In these brief, compelling, and memorable selections, taken from his interviews as well as his visual and written works, Basquiat writes and speaks about culture, his artistic persona, the art world, artistic influence, race, urban life, and many other subjects. Concise, direct, forceful, poetic, and enigmatic, Basquiat's words, like his art, continue to resonate. Select quotations from the book: "I cross out words so you will see them more; the fact that they are obscured makes you want to read them." "I think there are a lot of people that are neglected in art, I don't know if it's because of who made the paintings or what, but, um . . . black people are never really portrayed realistically or I mean not even portrayed in modern art." "Since I was 17, I thought I might be a star." "The more I paint the more I like everything." "I think I make art for myself, but ultimately I think I make it for the world."

Egon Schiele lived in Vienna during its last years as capital of the declining Habsburg Empire. Rejected by his family and hounded by society for his interest in young girls, he expressed through his art a deep and bewildering loneliness and an obsession with sexuality, death and decay. Schiele died at the age of twenty-eight, yet he left behind him a body of work that sustains a huge public reputation - and myth. This profusely illustrated book delves into both the controversial sexual themes and neglected aspects of Schiele's art, notably his formal experiments and his later expressionist portraits and allegorical paintings - works that reveal much about the importance of his short career.

Like spiral galaxies composed of millions of orbiting stars, the works of New York State-based artist Shinique Smith are graceful yet forceful combinations of many different materials and ideas. The wide range of inspirations that inform her artistic practice includes dance, Eastern spiritual philosophies, fashion, graffiti, music, childhood wonder, Japanese calligraphy, and poetry. Smith makes her sculptures, which hang from the ceiling or sit directly on the floor, by binding together an array of textiles, typically old clothing sourced from multiple locations, with knotted cords and ribbons. Tucked within the folds of fabric are seemingly unimportant items from everyday life such as artificial flowers, butterfly decals, and stuffed animals. In Smith's paintings, these elements intermingle with cloth fragments, bold calligraphic brushwork, and vivid waves of color to create energetic expressions of her personal history as well as a greater sense of cultural concern and cosmic connectivity. In addition to an introduction to Smith's work by Kathryn Delmez, curator of an accompanying exhibition at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the book includes a biography and bibliography of Shinique Smith, a statement by the artist (""Black Wonder and Rainbows""), and an interview with her conducted by Jen Mergel, the Robert L. Beal, Enid L. Beal, and Bruce A. Beal Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
