From 1970 to 2007, hundreds of millions of pounds of pesticides were applied annually to U.S. food crops to protect them from pests. To protect consumers, EPA sets standards -- known as tolerances -- for pesticide residues on foods. FSIS monitors meat, poultry, and processed egg products to ensure they do not violate EPA's tolerances, and FDA monitors other foods, including fruits and vegetables. AMS gathers annual residue data for highly consumed foods, although not for enforcement purposes. Over the last decade there has been an explosion of academic interest in the study of Behavioral Operations (Behavioral Ops). Simultaneous concerns have emerged about the adequacy with which now established Behavioral Ops phenomena are dealt with in degree-granting programs and corporate training agendas. Concerns stem from two points: (1) Pedagogical lessons regarding human behavioral are largely cast in the perspectives and terminology of underlying social/psychological theories. This has traditionally made it difficult for teachers of operations management content to link such knowledge to OM teaching plans and materials. (2) Games are seen as a major contribution to Behavioral Operations education, but experiments as described in literature are usually used for scientific research, and often difficult to replicate in teaching settings due to the use of unique proprietary software or insufficient descriptions of methods and materials used. In 1986 Lon Savage published Thunder in the Mountains: The West Virginia Mine War, 1920-21, a popular history now considered a classic. A history of how India became a major player in the global technology industry, mapping technological, economic, and political transformations. The rise of the Indian information technology industry is a remarkable economic success story. Software and services exports from India amounted to less than $100 million in 1990, and today come close to $100 billion. But, as Dinesh Sharma explains in The Outsourcer, Indian IT's success has a long prehistory; it did not begin with software support, or with American firms' eager recruitment of cheap and plentiful programming labor, or with India's economic liberalization of the 1990s. The foundations of India's IT revolution were laid long ago, even before the country's independence from British rule in 1947, as leading Indian scientists established research institutes that became centers for the development of computer science and technology. The "miracle" of Indian IT is actually a story about the long work of converting skills and knowledge into capital and wealth. With The Outsourcer, Sharma offers the first comprehensive history of the forces that drove India's IT success. This is a life touched by tragedy and deprivation - childhood in her native. Ireland ending with the potato famine, immigration to Canada and then to the United States, marriage followed by the deaths of her husband and four children from yellow fever, and the destruction of her dressmaking business in the great Chicago fire of 1871 - forged the stalwart labor organizer Mary Harris 'Mother' Jones into a force to be reckoned with. Radicalized in a brutal era of repeated violence against hard-working men and women, Mother Jones criss-crossed the country to demand higher wages and safer working conditions. Her activism in support of American workers began after the age of sixty. The grandmotherly persona she projected won the hearts, and her stirring rhetoric the minds, of working people. She made herself into a national symbol of resistance to tyranny. Sometimes exaggerating her own experiences, she fought for justice in mines, factories, and workshops across the nation. For her troubles she was condemned as 'the most dangerous woman in America'. At her death in 1930 at the age of ninety-three, thousands paid tribute at a Washington, D.C., memorial service, and again at her burial in the only union-owned cemetery in America in the small mining town of Mount Olive, Illinois. As noted in ""The New York Times"", the Rev. W. R. McGuire, who conducted her burial, said, 'Wealthy coal operators and capitalists throughout the United States are breathing a sigh of relief while toil-worn men and women are weeping tears of bitter grief'. The courage of Mother Jones is notorious and admired to this day. Cordery effectively recounts her story in this accessible biography, bringing to life an amazing woman and explaining the dramatic times through which she lived and to which she contributed so much.
A History of the Liverpool Waterfront 1850-1890: The Struggle for Organisation is a detailed and comprehensive picture of the port of Liverpool in the nineteenth century.
