In the last 60 years, the use of the notion of category has led to a remarkable unification and simplification of mathematics. Conceptual Mathematics introduces this tool for the learning, development, and use of mathematics, to beginning students and also to practising mathematical scientists. This book provides a skeleton key that makes explicit some concepts and procedures that are common to all branches of pure and applied mathematics. The treatment does not presuppose knowledge of specific fields, but rather develops, from basic definitions, such elementary categories as discrete dynamical systems and directed graphs; the fundamental ideas are then illuminated by examples in these categories. This second edition provides links with more advanced topics of possible study. In the new appendices and annotated bibliography the reader will find concise introductions to adjoint functors and geometrical structures, as well as sketches of relevant historical developments.

Transform your approach to oprisk modelling with a proven, non-statistical methodology Operational Risk Modeling in Financial Services provides risk professionals with a forward-looking approach to risk modelling, based on structured management judgement over obsolete statistical methods. Proven over a decade's use in significant banks and financial services firms in Europe and the US, the Exposure, Occurrence, Impact (XOI) method of operational risk modelling played an instrumental role in reshaping their oprisk modelling approaches; in this book, the expert team that developed this methodology offers practical, in-depth guidance on XOI use and applications for a variety of major risks. The Basel Committee has dismissed statistical approaches to risk modelling, leaving regulators and practitioners searching for the next generation of oprisk quantification. The XOI method is ideally suited to fulfil this need, as a calculated, coordinated, consistent approach designed to bridge the gap between risk quantification and risk management. This book details the XOI framework and provides essential guidance for practitioners looking to change the oprisk modelling paradigm. Survey the range of current practices in operational risk analysis and modelling Track recent regulatory trends including capital modelling, stress testing and more Understand the XOI oprisk modelling method, and transition away from statistical approaches Apply XOI to major operational risks, such as disasters, fraud, conduct, legal and cyber risk The financial services industry is in dire need of a new standard -- a proven, transformational approach to operational risk that eliminates or mitigates the common issues with traditional approaches. Operational Risk Modeling in Financial Services provides practical, real-world guidance toward a more reliable methodology, shifting the conversation toward the future with a new kind of oprisk modelling.

Asymptotics of Random Matrices and Related Models - The Uses of Dyson-Schwinger Equations (Paperback): Alice Guionnet Asymptotics of Random Matrices and Related Models - The Uses of Dyson-Schwinger Equations (Paperback)
Alice Guionnet
R1,208 R1,066 Discovery Miles 10 660 Save R142 (12%) Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Probability theory is based on the notion of independence. The celebrated law of large numbers and the central limit theorem describe the asymptotics of the sum of independent variables. However, there are many models of strongly correlated random variables: for instance, the eigenvalues of random matrices or the tiles in random tilings. Classical tools of probability theory are useless to study such models. These lecture notes describe a general strategy to study the fluctuations of strongly interacting random variables. This strategy is based on the asymptotic analysis of Dyson-Schwinger (or loop) equations: the author will show how these equations are derived, how to obtain the concentration of measure estimates required to study these equations asymptotically, and how to deduce from this analysis the global fluctuations of the model. The author will apply this strategy in different settings: eigenvalues of random matrices, matrix models with one or several cuts, random tilings, and several matrices models.

This book is intended for readers who have had a course in iso-differential calculus and it can be used for a senior undergraduate course. Chapter 1 deals with exact iso-differential equations, while first-order iso-differential equations are studied in Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. Chapter 4 discusses iso-integral inequalities. Many iso-differential equations cannot be solved as finite combinations of elementary functions. Therefore, it is important to know whether a given iso-differential equation has a solution and if it is unique. These aspects of the existence and uniqueness of the solutions for first-order initial value problems are considered in Chapter 5. Iso-differential inequalities are discussed in Chapter 6. Continuity and differentiability of solutions with respect to initial conditions are examined in Chapter 7. Chapter 8 extends existence-uniqueness results and continuous dependence on initial data for linear iso-differential systems. Basic properties of solutions of linear iso-differential systems are given in Chapter 9. Chapter 10 deals with the fundamental matrix solutions. In Chapter 11, necessary and sufficient conditions are provided so that a linear iso-differential system has only periodic solutions. The asymptotic behaviour of the solutions of linear systems is investigated in Chapter 12. Chapters 13 and 14 are devoted to some aspects of the stability of solutions of iso-differential systems. The last major topic covered in this book is that of boundary value problems involving second-order iso-differential equations. After linear boundary value problems are introduced in Chapter 15, Green's function and its construction is discussed in Chapter 16.

An exploration of one of the most celebrated and well-known theorems in mathematics By any measure, the Pythagorean theorem is the most famous statement in all of mathematics. In this book, Eli Maor reveals the full story of this ubiquitous geometric theorem. Although attributed to Pythagoras, the theorem was known to the Babylonians more than a thousand years earlier. Pythagoras may have been the first to prove it, but his proof-if indeed he had one-is lost to us. The theorem itself, however, is central to almost every branch of science, pure or applied. Maor brings to life many of the characters that played a role in its history, providing a fascinating backdrop to perhaps our oldest enduring mathematical legacy.

This unique text for beginning graduate students gives a self-contained introduction to the mathematical properties of stochastics and presents their applications to Markov processes, coding theory, population dynamics, and search engine design. The book is ideal for a newly designed course in an introduction to probability and information theory. Prerequisites include working knowledge of linear algebra, calculus, and probability theory. The first part of the text focuses on the rigorous theory of Markov processes on countable spaces (Markov chains) and provides the basis to developing solid probabilistic intuition without the need for a course in measure theory. The approach taken is gradual beginning with the case of discrete time and moving on to that of continuous time. The second part of this text is more applied; its core introduces various uses of convexity in probability and presents a nice treatment of entropy.

Mathematical Methods for Oscillations and Waves (Hardcover): Joel Franklin Mathematical Methods for Oscillations and Waves (Hardcover)
Joel Franklin
R1,148 Discovery Miles 11 480 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

Anchored in simple and familiar physics problems, the author provides a focused introduction to mathematical methods in a narrative driven and structured manner. Ordinary and partial differential equation solving, linear algebra, vector calculus, complex variables and numerical methods are all introduced and bear relevance to a wide range of physical problems. Expanded and novel applications of these methods highlight their utility in less familiar areas, and advertise those areas that will become more important as students continue. This highlights both the utility of each method in progressing with problems of increasing complexity while also allowing students to see how a simplified problem becomes 're-complexified'. Advanced topics include nonlinear partial differential equations, and relativistic and quantum mechanical variants of problems like the harmonic oscillator. Physics, mathematics and engineering students will find 300 problems treated in a sophisticated manner. The insights emerging from Franklin's treatment make it a valuable teaching resource.

Modern Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces with Mathematica (Hardcover, 3rd New edition): Elsa Abbena, Simon Salamon,... Modern Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces with Mathematica (Hardcover, 3rd New edition)
Elsa Abbena, Simon Salamon, Alfred Gray
R2,217 Discovery Miles 22 170 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Presenting theory while using "Mathematica" in a complementary way, Modern Differential Geometry of Curves and Surfaces with Mathematica, the third edition of Alfred Gray's famous textbook, covers how to define and compute standard geometric functions using "Mathematica" for constructing new curves and surfaces from existing ones. Since Gray's death, authors Abbena and Salamon have stepped in to bring the book up to date. While maintaining Gray's intuitive approach, they reorganized the material to provide a clearer division between the text and the "Mathematica" code and added a "Mathematica" notebook as an appendix to each chapter. They also address important new topics, such as quaternions.

The approach of this book is at times more computational than is usual for a book on the subject. For example, Brioshi's formula for the Gaussian curvature in terms of the first fundamental form can be too complicated for use in hand calculations, but"Mathematica "handles it easily, either through computations or through graphing curvature. Another part of "Mathematica" that can be used effectively in differential geometry is its special function library, where nonstandard spaces of constant curvature can be defined in terms of elliptic functions and then plotted.

Using the techniques described in this book, readers will understand concepts geometrically, plotting curves and surfaces on a monitor and then printing them. Containing more than 300 illustrations, the book demonstrates how to use "Mathematica" to plot many interesting curves and surfaces. Including as many topics of the classical differential geometry and surfaces as possible, it highlights important theorems with many examples. It includes 300 miniprograms for computing and plotting various geometric objects, alleviating the drudgery of computing things such as the curvature and torsion of a curve in space.
