Ocean Mixing (Hardcover): Michael C. Gregg Ocean Mixing (Hardcover)
Michael C. Gregg
R1,643 Discovery Miles 16 430 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The stratified ocean mixes episodically in small patches where energy is dissipated and density smoothed over scales of centimeters. The net effect of these countless events effects the shape of the ocean's thermocline, how heat is transported from the sea surface to the interior, and how dense bottom water is lifted into the global overturning circulation. This book explores the primary factors affecting mixing, beginning with the thermodynamics of seawater, how they vary in the ocean and how they depend on the physical properties of seawater. Turbulence and double diffusion are then discussed, which determines how mixing evolves and the different impacts it has on velocity, temperature, and salinity. It reviews insights from both laboratory studies and numerical modelling, emphasising the assumptions and limitations of these methods. This is an excellent reference for researchers and graduate students working to advance our understanding of mixing, including oceanographers, atmospheric scientists and limnologists.

Computational Hydraulics (Paperback): Ioana Popescu Computational Hydraulics (Paperback)
Ioana Popescu
R2,493 Discovery Miles 24 930 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Computational Hydraulics introduces the concept of modeling and the contribution of numerical methods and numerical analysis to modeling. It provides a concise and comprehensive description of the basic hydraulic principles, and the problems addressed by these principles in the aquatic environment. The necessary steps for building and applying numerical methods in hydraulics comprise the core of the book and this is followed by a report of different example applications of computational hydraulics: river training effects on flood propagation, water quality modelling of lakes and coastal applications. The theory and exercises included in the book promote learning of concepts within academic environments. Sample codes are made available online for purchasers of the book. Computational Hydraulics is intended for under-graduate and graduate students, researchers, members of governmental and non-governmental agencies and professionals involved in management of the water related problems. Advanced Mechanics of Solids - Analytical and Numerical Solutions with MATLAB (R) (Hardcover): Lester W. Schmerr Jr. Advanced Mechanics of Solids - Analytical and Numerical Solutions with MATLAB (R) (Hardcover)
Lester W. Schmerr Jr.
R1,933 Discovery Miles 19 330 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Build on the foundations of elementary mechanics of materials texts with this modern textbook that covers the analysis of stresses and strains in elastic bodies. Discover how all analyses of stress and strain are based on the four pillars of equilibrium, compatibility, stress-strain relations, and boundary conditions. These four principles are discussed and provide a bridge between elementary analyses and more detailed treatments with the theory of elasticity. Using MATLAB (R) extensively throughout, the author considers three-dimensional stress, strain and stress-strain relations in detail with matrix-vector relations. Based on classroom-proven material, this valuable resource provides a unified approach useful for advanced undergraduate students and graduate students, practicing engineers, and researchers.

Stability and Suppression of Turbulence in Relaxing Molecular Gas Flows (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017): Yurii N. Grigoryev, Igor V.... Stability and Suppression of Turbulence in Relaxing Molecular Gas Flows (Hardcover, 1st ed. 2017)
Yurii N. Grigoryev, Igor V. Ershov
R3,881 Discovery Miles 38 810 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

This book presents an in-depth systematic investigation of a dissipative effect which manifests itself as the growth of hydrodynamic stability and suppression of turbulence in relaxing molecular gas flows. The work describes the theoretical foundations of a new way to control stability and laminar turbulent transitions in aerodynamic flows. It develops hydrodynamic models for describing thermal nonequilibrium gas flows which allow the consideration of suppression of inviscid acoustic waves in 2D shear flows. Then, nonlinear evolution of large-scale vortices and Kelvin-Helmholtz waves in relaxing shear flows are studied. Critical Reynolds numbers in supersonic Couette flows are calculated analytically and numerically within the framework of both linear and nonlinear classical energy hydrodynamic stability theories. The calculations clearly show that the relaxation process can appreciably delay the laminar-turbulent transition. The aim of the book is to show the new dissipative effect, which can be used for flow control and laminarization. This volume will be of interest and useful to mechanical engineers, physicists, and mathematicians who specialize in hydrodynamic stability theory, turbulence, and laminarization of flows.

Thermodynamic and Transport Properties of Fluids (Staple bound, 5th Edition): G.F.C. Rogers, Y.R. Mayhew Thermodynamic and Transport Properties of Fluids (Staple bound, 5th Edition)
G.F.C. Rogers, Y.R. Mayhew
R282 Discovery Miles 2 820 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

The fifth edition of "Thermodynamic and Transport Properties of Fluids" incorporates two new tables: other material is being retained essentially as in the fourth edition, although tables beyond p.11 will be on different pages.

The new tables are as follows: Data of Refrigerant 134a (tetrafluoroethane - CH2F-CF3) are being added because this refrigerant is environmentally more acceptable than Refrigerant 12 which it replaces. The table of R12 is being retained, however, because R12 will survive in much equipment for a long time. At present it is still uncertain whether R134a is a medium-term substitute, or will be used for much longer than a decade.

Figure 15.11 from "Engineering Thermodynamics, Work and Heat Transfer" (Rogers & Mayhew, Longman 1992) is being included. The table contains, for selected substances, molar enthalpies and molar Gibbs functions of formation, and Equilibrium constants of formation, as well as molar heat capacities and absolute entropies.

Ocean Circulation in Three Dimensions (Hardcover): Barry A. Klinger, Thomas W. N. Haine Ocean Circulation in Three Dimensions (Hardcover)
Barry A. Klinger, Thomas W. N. Haine
R1,205 Discovery Miles 12 050 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Notable advances of the last quarter-century have deepened our appreciation of the three-dimensional nature of the ocean's large-scale circulation. This circulation has important implications for ocean chemistry and biology, atmospheric science, and climate. Ocean Circulation in Three Dimensions surveys both observations and theories of the time-mean circulation, enabling readers to see the relevance and limitations of leading theories, as well as the patterns linking the behavior of different oceans. The book covers "classical" topics of horizontal circulation, and expands them to include shallow wind-driven overturning, the deep global "conveyer belt", high latitudes, the role of eddies, and the ocean's role in heat transport. Solutions to exercises are available online for instructor use. This textbook is ideal for students of physical oceanography, chemical oceanography and climate. It is also suitable for readers from related fields as it includes a summary of introductory topics.
