How can we be more mindful when the world is this f*cked up? How to
Stay Human in a F*cked Up World is the fresh, engaging answer to
this important question. If you've tried mindfulness before and
failed, we get it. Likely you were told to sit on a pillow in a
dark room, meditate, or count your breaths. But mindfulness isn't
about separating ourselves from the problems in the world. Instead,
it is about re-learning how to get out there, connect with the
suffering of every living being and in so doing, embrace your own
personal suffering to heal, transform, grow, and finally find
peace. Tim Desmond-an esteemed Buddhist philosopher who has
lectured on psychology at both Harvard and Yale and studied under
Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh-has spent his life cultivating new ways
to bridge the gap between the ancient tradition of mindfulness and
modern life. With How to Stay Human in a F*cked Up World Desmond
gets right to the heart of our collective pain with a life-changing
mindfulness practice for surviving the sometimes-miserable world we
live in, featuring strategies and guidance you can start using to
feel more connected, joyful, and present today.
Let's slow down and ask some basic questions about the whole idea
of a yoga assist - because offering and receiving great assists
depends first on knowing what an assist is. Back in the old days of
yoga assists were called "corrections." The idea was that the
student was doing something wrong and the teacher could manipulate
the wrongness away. Later came the word "adjustment," which is a
little better, conveying the student is on the right track and some
adjustments are needed.
In this book, world renowned Jivamukti Yoga practitioners Sharon
Gannon and David Life use the word "assist" to communicate the idea
that in yoga there are actually two beings interacting together on
various levels of consciousness to foster a decrease in avidya,
"mis-knowing," and an increase in vidya, or the knowing principle.
A yoga assist then, is action taken in a microcosmic relationship
that reveals macrocosmic truths. It is action undertaken in
mutuality with the best of intentions and the blessing of the
teacher's teachers.
The giving of yoga is an art. Yoga assists are not static; they
comprise a flowing dance of body, breath, and energy. They are
based on continuous focus and awareness of the relationship between
partners in the process. It takes two to Tango As in Tango, in each
encounter with yoga student and teacher there is an equation of
reciprocity. Whether we receive or give an assist is an active
process in the resolution of a relationship, a transmission, a
dance. In this sense, the relationship between teacher and student
is a microcosm of the flowing inter-relation among all people, all
species, all living beings.
Through this book, with the "assistance" of Sharon and David,
practitioners will deepen their understanding of the fundamental
principles of yoga assists and apply them in practice and in
service to others.
Yoga is a comprehensive mind-body practice that is particularly
effective for self-regulation, mood management, fostering
resilience, and promotion of wellbeing. Inherently, yoga is a
system for improving mental health and alleviating suffering at the
deepest levels. Consequently, yoga's potential as a key component
of integrative and complementary mental health is now being
recognized internationally. This book serves as a reference, but
also as a bridge between yoga therapy and healthcare, helping to
add to the process of growing integration. It provides a
professional resource for mental health professionals interested in
the potential for yoga interventions that facilitate the
therapeutic process, and who want to learn ways in which yoga can
catalyze and deepen this process across a broad spectrum of mental
health approaches. Similarly for yoga professionals with a focus on
mental health and wellbeing who want to expand their understanding
of how yoga relates to mental health approaches and their knowledge
of best practices The format is designed for consistency and ease
of reading. Chapter 1 introduces the reader to the yogic viewpoint
of mental health and wellbeing, and the psychological and
neurological rationale for yoga's usage in mental health
conditions. Each subsequent chapter is organized into a clinical
overview of mental health conditions, followed by sections on
current research and the rationale for incorporating yoga into the
treatment of the condition, recommended yoga practices, and future
directions.
Work-related stress is an all-too-common part of modern life. The
rise of digital media means that many people never really "switch
off" from work and the culture of presenteeism causes us to spend
more time at work than ever before. Many workers spend a lot of
time either ruminating on past work stress or worrying about future
work-related problems. By applying the principles of mindfulness -
an ancient Buddhist practice - to our working lives, we can become
aware of our habitual negative thoughts and behaviours and learn to
recognise and manage the warning signs of stress. Anna Black
suggests short and simple meditations that can be used throughout
the working day to strengthen focus and concentration, enhance
working relationships and improve empathy - all of which help you
to perform well and keep calm at work, whatever your job. Anna's
suggestions are applicable to both office-based workers and those
who work from home and she covers a range of topics including
working mindfully with others, paying mindful attention in meetings
and using meditation to cope with stressful situations.

program draws on cleansing methods from traditional Chinese
medicine and Ayurveda and has been specifically designed for women
who are trying naturally or with assisted-reproduction plans. Also

of infertility, this important book offers all women a natural,

We live in a world of chronic stress and dis-ease, a world of
rampant anxiety and depression. If we stay locked onto the
horizontal plane of superficial concerns and challenges, we are
doomed to feeling deeply unsettled. However, if we intentionally
shift our awareness to the vertical plane of life -- diving into
spiritual depths and rising to transcendent perspectives -- we
connect with a Spirit that is both beyond and within us. Chapters
Include: Ch. 1 Awaken Ch. 2 Connect Ch. 3 Wonder Ch. 4 Love Ch. 5
Trust Ch. 6 Home Each chapter offers five specific 'sacred pause
practices' to instill a habit of first inviting stillness and then
weaving a fabric of spiritual experiences. Being intentional in
this way, on a daily basis, ultimately makes navigating one's life
a radiant adventure rather than an exhausting race through a dark
world. The Little Book of Spiritual Bliss offers a compendium of
simple spiritual practices to help foster connection with the
Divine, to cultivate sacred wellbeing, and to increase awareness of
being a wave within an ocean of Spirit. Living with this sort of
faith underpinning isn't merely a 'belief', it's an experience.
Reveals how psychedelics can facilitate spiritual development and
direct encounters with the sacred * With contributions by Albert
Hofmann, Huston Smith, Stanislav Grof, Charles Tart, Alexander
"Sasha" Shulgin, Brother David Steindl-Rast, and many others *
Includes personal accounts of Walter Pahnke's Good Friday
Experiment as well as a 25-year follow-up with its participants
Modern organized religion is based predominantly on secondary
religious experience--we read about others' extraordinary spiritual
encounters with God but have no direct experience ourselves. Yet
there exist powerful sacraments to help us directly experience the
sacred, to help us seek out the meaning of being human and our
place in the universe, and to help us see the sacred in the world
that surrounds us. In this book, more than 25 spiritual leaders,
scientists, and psychedelic visionaries examine how we can return
to the primary spiritual encounters at the basis of all religions
through the guided use of psychedelics. With contributions by
Albert Hofmann, Huston Smith, Stanislav Grof, Charles Tart,
Alexander "Sasha" Shulgin, Brother David Steindl-Rast, Myron
Stolaroff, and many others, this book explores protocols for
ceremonial and spiritual use of psychedelics, including LSD,
psilocybin, ayahuasca, and MDMA, and the challenges of transforming
entheogenic insights into enduring change. It examines psychoactive
sacraments in the Bible, myths surrounding the use of LSD, and the
transformative ayahuasca rituals of Santo Daime. The book also
includes personal accounts of Walter Pahnke's Good Friday
Experiment as well as a 25-year follow-up with its participants.

A practice to consciously explore wakefulness, dreaming, deep
sleep, and the very structure of your emotional, mental, and energy
bodies * Details the simple postures of Yoga Nidra, breathing
exercises and guided meditations, and tips for maintaining
awareness in the liminal state that precedes sleep * Includes four
complete sessions as well as pointers for creating your own
sessions Known as the "yoga of conscious sleep," Yoga Nidra is an
ancient Indian practice that allows you to consciously explore the
states of wakefulness, dream, and deep sleep as well as your own
psyche by combining deep relaxation with attentive awareness.
Through Yoga Nidra you can directly observe and understand specific
physiological, emotional, and mental processes within yourself as
well as experience moments of great inner tranquility, joy, and
well-being. Providing a step-by-step guide to Yoga Nidra, Pierre
Bonnasse details the simple postures of Yoga Nidra and includes
preparatory techniques that work with breath and guided meditations
to help you become an attuned observer of your inner world.
Offering tips for withdrawing the senses and maintaining awareness
in the liminal state that precedes sleep, the author explores how
all practices in this discipline begin with a phase of relaxation
and observation of breathing, followed by immersion into a very
subtle awareness of the physical, energy, and mental bodies. The
higher states of more advanced sessions focus on the energy body
and its components: the chakras, nadis, and pranavayu, the vital
breath and autonomic functions of the body. Including four complete
sessions as well as pointers for creating your own, Bonnasse shows
how Yoga Nidra offers stabilizing, and therapeutic effects for the
body, emotions, and thoughts. Connecting Indian and Western
philosophical ideas, the author shows how sleep can be an
opportunity to practice a form of yoga that changes not only our
nights but every minute of our days.
