Becoming Men - Black Masculinities In A South African Township (Paperback): Malose Langa Becoming Men - Black Masculinities In A South African Township (Paperback)
Malose Langa
R300 R248 Discovery Miles 2 480 Save R52 (17%) In stock

Becoming Men is the story of 32 boys from Alexandra, one of Johannesburg's largest townships, over a period of twelve seminal years in which they negotiate manhood and masculinity. Psychologist and academic Malose Langa documents in close detail what it means to be a young black man in contemporary South Africa.

The boys discuss a range of topics including the impact of absent fathers, relationships with mothers, siblings and girls, school violence, academic performance, homophobia, gangsterism, unemployment and, in one case, prison life. Deep ambivalence, self-doubt and hesitation emerge in their approach to alternative masculinities premised on non-violent, non-sexist and non-risk-taking behaviour. Many of the boys appear simultaneously to comply with and oppose the prevalent norms, thereby exposing the difficulties of negotiating the multiple voices of masculinity.

Providing a rich interpretation of how emotional processes affect black adolescent males, Langa suggests interventions and services to support and assist them, especially in reducing high-risk behaviours generally associated with hegemonic masculinity. This is essential reading for students, researchers and scholars of gender studies who wish to understand manhood and masculinity in South Africa. Psychologists, youth workers, lay counsellors and teachers who work with adolescent boys will also find it invaluable.

***THE FOLLOW UP TO THE AWARD-WINNING AND BESTSELLING STORIES FOR BOYS WHO DARE TO BE DIFFERENT***

Tom Daley, Oliver Sacks, the Jamaican Bobsled team, Amrou Al-Kadhi, Carlos Acosta... all dared to be different.

This is the follow-up to the much loved and hugely successful Stories for Boys Who Dare to be Different, the bestselling book that changed countless boys' lives around the world and gave them the confidence to be themselves.

What have the footballer Kylian Mbappé, the philosopher Socrates and the singer Ed Sheeran all got in common? All three of them defied expectations - going against the grain and pursuing their dreams - despite a seemingly impossible barrage of obstacles and difficulties. Their stories are incredible, as are those of the tap-dancer Evan Ruggiero, the Pokémon creator Satoshi Tajiri, and the other inspirational boys who fill the pages of this extraordinary book.

It's books like these that can make a huge difference to parents and their children's lives. In this day and age, any publication that shows how we can triumph in the face of adversity and prejudice deserves to be read over and over again.

My Last Eight Thousand Days - An American Male in His Seventies (Hardcover): Lee Gutkind My Last Eight Thousand Days - An American Male in His Seventies (Hardcover)

As founding editor of Creative Nonfiction and architect of the genre, Lee Gutkind played a crucial role in establishing literary, narrative nonfiction in the marketplace and in the academy. A longstanding advocate of New Journalism, he has reported on a wide range of issues-robots and artificial intelligence, mental illness, organ transplants, veterinarians and animals, baseball, motorcycle enthusiasts-and explored them all with his unique voice and approach. In My Last Eight Thousand Days, Gutkind turns his notepad and tape recorder inward, using his skills as an immersion journalist to perform a deep dive on himself. Here, he offers a memoir of his life as a journalist, editor, husband, father, and Pittsburgh native, not only recounting his many triumphs, but also exposing his missteps and challenges. The overarching concern that frames these brave, often confessional stories, is his obsession and fascination with aging: how aging provoked anxieties and unearthed long-rooted tensions, and how he came to accept, even enjoy, his mental and physical decline. Gutkind documents the realities of aging with the characteristically blunt, melancholic wit and authenticity that drive the quiet force of all his work.

Recent years have seen a growing world-wide concern about men and boys. Do boys have appropriate role models at home? Are girls outperforming boys at school? Is men's health under undue pressure? The nature of masculinity has been brought into question by a radical reorganisation of gender relations. Indeed, many now speak of a 'crisis in masculinity'. South Africa has made a rapid shift from a male-dominated patriarchal society, to a new social order based on ideals of equality between men and women. How have men responded to these changes? How do men achieve successful masculinity in this new context? These are some of the questions that are explored in this title.

The Future of Men (Paperback): Grace Campbell The Future of Men (Paperback)

Where and who do we want to be? How might we get there? What might happen if we stay on our current course? Comedian, writer and activist Grace Campbell was born into a political environment that suggested only aggressive, dominant men - like her father Alistair Campbell - were allowed power. Seeing this, she decided that if she wanted to be powerful she had to be like him, a decision that baffled the boys she grew up with. In The Future of Men, Grace draws on research, interviews and her own experience to examine how these dynamics and presumptions have shifted in her lifetime, and will continue to change in coming decades. Men have been writing about the future of women since words came into existence - now Grace returns the favour with this sharp, funny and personal essay. This brief but mighty book is one of five that comprise the first set of FUTURES essays. Each standalone book presents the author's original vision of a singular aspect of the future which inspires in them hope or reticence, optimism or fear. Read individually, these essays will inform, entertain and challenge. Together, they form a picture of what might lie ahead, and ask the reader to imagine how we might make the transition from here to there, from now to then.

Addressing the many unique academic challenges that face black males -- from low self-esteem, absenteeism, fatherlessness, and gangs to not accepting middle-class values, the impact of hip-hop culture, and drugs -- this book provides answers and hope to teachers and the afflicted students and their families. With over 75 solutions for educators to implement in their schools, including mentoring programs, rites of passage, internships, motivational speeches, counselling, and co-operative learning, this helpful resource shows how issues of retention, illiteracy, special education, and dropping out are simply symptoms of a much larger disease, and, if left unaddressed, will continue to stunt the education of black students.

Masculine Identity in the Fiction of the Arab East since 1967 (Hardcover): Samira Aghacy Masculine Identity in the Fiction of the Arab East since 1967 (Hardcover)
Samira Aghacy
R790 Discovery Miles 7 900 Ships in 7 - 11 working days

This book offers an exploration of masculinity in the literature of the Arab East (Lebanon, Jordan, Palestine, Syria, and Iraq) in the context of a specific set of anxieties about gender roles and sexuality in Arab societies. While gender studies in the area have focused primarily on the situation of women, the treatment of Arab men as gendered subjects has fallen behind. Samira Aghacy's rich analysis presents gender relations not within a fixed biological mold, but rather as a complex phenomenon fraught with ambivalence and operating within particular historical and geopolitical settings. Through a series of close readings of twenty contemporary Arabic novels, Aghacy presents a mosaic of masculinities that challenges the generally held view of an essentialized archetypal Arab man and mirrors a contested vision of manliness where men figure in diverse sociocultural environments. This groundbreaking work reveals the volatile nature of masculinity and its inextricability from femininity.

Masculinities (Paperback, 2nd Edition): Raewyn W Connell Masculinities (Paperback, 2nd Edition)
Raewyn W Connell
R493 Discovery Miles 4 930 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This is an exciting new edition of R.W. Connella s ground--breaking text, which has become a classic work on the nature and construction of masculine identity. Connell argues that there is not one masculinity, but many different masculinities, each associated with different positions of power. In a world gender order that continues to privilege men over women, but also raises difficult issues for men and boys, his account is more pertinent than ever before. In a substantial new introduction and conclusion, Connell discusses the development of masculinity studies in the ten years since the booka s initial publication. He explores global gender relations, new theories, and practical uses of mascunlinity research. Looking to the future, his new concluding chapter addresses the politics of masculinities, and the implications of masculinity research for understanding current world issues. Against the backdrop of an increasingly divided world, dominated by neo--conservative politics, Connella s account highlights a series of compelling questions about the future of human society. This second edition of Connella s classic book will be essential reading for students taking courses on masculinities and gender studies, and will be of interest to students and scholars across the humanities and social sciences.

Being Young, Male and Saudi - Identity and Politics in a Globalized Kingdom (Paperback): Mark C Thompson Being Young, Male and Saudi - Identity and Politics in a Globalized Kingdom (Paperback)

R604 Discovery Miles 6 040 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Although the position of Saudi women within society draws media attention throughout the world, young Saudi men remain part of a silent mass, their thoughts and views rarely heard outside of the Kingdom. Based on primary research across Saudi Arabia with young men from a diverse range of backgrounds, Mark C. Thompson allows for this distinct group of voices to be heard, revealing their opinions and attitudes towards the societal and economic transformations affecting their lives within a gender-segregated society and examining the challenges and dilemmas facing young Saudi men in the twenty-first century. From ideas and beliefs about, identity, education, employment, marriage prospects and gender segregation, as well as political participation and exclusion, this study in turn invites us to reconsider the future of Saudi Arabia as a globalized kingdom.

While masculinity studies enjoy considerable growth in the West, there is very little analysis of African masculinities. This volume explores what it means for an African to be masculine and how male identity is shaped by cultural forces. The editors believe that to tackle the important questions in Africa - the many forms of violence (wars, genocides, familial violence and crime) and the AIDS pandemic - it is necessary to understand how a combination of a colonial past, patriarchal cultural structures and a variety of religious and knowledge systems creates masculine identities and sexualities. The work done in the book particularly bears in mind how vulnerability and marginalization produce complex forms of male identity. The book is interdisciplinary and is the first in-depth and comprehensive study of African men as a gendered category.

The time has come for Catholic men to take up their God- ordained role as priest, prophet, and king of their families. In The Three Marks of Manhood, author and psychologist G. C. Dilsaver shows you how to do this by wielding the three staffs of patriarchy: the Scepter of authority and self-discipline, the Crosier of spiritual stewardship, and the Cross of redemptive suffering. This familial headship to which God calls Christian patriarchs is not the old pagan notion of brute dominance over wife and children, but rather a loving authority that is unequivocal yet self-sacrificial just like Christ's. Indeed, it is only by imitating Our Lord's headship over His Church that men can lead their families to become what God intended, and empower them to resist the threats of secular culture. The Three Marks of Manhood is a bold and wise book that will show both husbands and wives the way to greater virtue and happiness. Read it and learn how to build a strong and lasting marriage, raise children to become faithful men and women of God, and foster an authentic Catholic culture in your home.
