A one patch quilt is essentially a patchwork quilt made from a single repeating shape. This is the simplest type of quilt you can make, but with carefully chosen coordinating patterns and colours, the results can be stunning. There are very few books on the market devoted entirely to one-patch quilts, so we expect this to be a popular book by a well-known sewing author. Carolyn Forster, who is an expert quilter, provides the inspiration for making these simple quilts, using a range of lovely fabrics. The book contains 20 projects, each using a different-shaped patch; for example, there are rectangles, hexagons, squares, triangles, diamonds, and so on. The quilts range from those based on a random selection of plain and patterned fabrics, to those that use just two or three different-coloured plain fabrics stitched together to form an interesting geometric design. This book will appeal to patch workers, quilters and sewers looking for a source of ideas and inspiration for simple patchwork quilt designs that are quick and satisfying to make, while also being beautiful.
More than 60 stitches and techniques in inspiring combinations. When top artists from various disciplines collaborate, the result is bound to be greater than the sum of the individuals' skills. Having discussed various possibilities of working together, fine artist Monique Day-Wilde and master embroiderers Hazel Blomkamp and Di van Niekerk finally chose mandalas. Using Monique's original hand-drawn mandala designs as their templates, Hazel and Di filled them with creative surface embroidery using a wide range of stitches and techniques in stunning combinations. From simple, monochromatic line designs to colourful and flamboyant bead-and-thread combinations, the embroidered mandalas will inspire and delight everyone from rank beginners to the most experienced. Using different base fabrics, from traditional embroidery linen and dupion silk to shweshwe and mattress ticking to best showcase the various designs, stitches and threads, the authors share loads of ideas and tips and offer instruction with a fresh approach to surface embroidery. Stitches include the old favourites, such as simple back- and chain stitch, as well as more intricate needle lace, trellis couching and weaving. Beads abound to add sparkle and finishing touches, and special effects are created by incorporating the occasional bit of trapunto, ribbon embroidery and applique'. Both line and colour templates of the 25 designs are included, with a detailed stitch diagram and list of threads and materials for every project. Some templates have been given two completely different embroidery treatments to illustrate how versatile the designs are. Each template also has an artist's annotation about the design inspiration and colours used - adding interest and providing practical information for embroiderers who wish to follow their own colouring. Colouring with ink and crayon prior to colouring with thread can add a whole new dimension to your embroidery. Beautiful photographs of the completed embroideries add to the book's visual appeal and for good measure there is a complete stitch gallery with illustrations and instructions for all the stitches and techniques used.

Following the success of Crewel Intentions and Crewel Twists, which introduced embroiderers to needle-lace and loom-weaving techniques in their designs, comes Crewel Creatures, the third title in this series by renowned embroiderer Hazel Blomkamp. Animals and birds are popular subjects in crewel embroidery, and here Hazel introduces needleworkers to the beautiful, exotic creatures found in the African wild. Using the Jacobean embroidery style for which she is well known, and incorporating the subtle influence of the fractal designs found in zentangle art, Hazel also brings beads and other three-dimensional elements into her designs to capture the stunning and colourful art that is traditionally associated with Africa. Those new to Hazels work will find the essential crewel stitches, needle-lace and needle-weaving techniques needed in an easy-to-follow how-to section and stitch gallery inside the book, and all embroiderers will be impressed by the wealth of design ideas and inspiration Crewel Creatures has to offer. With every project, step-by-step instructions and gorgeous photographs are included, along with a template of the design. All the projects are stitched and embellished on natural coloured linen, making them not only perfect for framing for display but also wonderfully economical for embroiderers to work on. For readers looking for something different and new to stitch, and for those keen to challenge themselves with more complex embroidery techniques, this latest addition to Hazel's Crewel series is an absolute must-have.
All of the incredible pieces you see in this book have been made with only a needle, thread, fabric, ribbons and beads. You can even learn to use embroidery to create your own patchwork pieces from scratch. Hazel's comprehensive technique gallery explains more than 160 techniques for bead embroidery, silk ribbon embroidery, needle weaving and tatting as well as free-hand quilting and working from paper templates. There are five projects included, so you can make your own beautiful finished pieces. Be inspired to combine all your needlework skills in new and exciting ways.

This is a unique opportunity to step back in time and learn how to recreate the earliest dated piece of British patchwork - the 1718 coverlet. The coverlet is the earliest known British patchwork that has a date worked into it and forms a benchmark against which all other rare survivors of early 18th century patchwork can be compared. Learn how to piece each of the stunning 69 quilt blocks - this unique book features a block directory and instructions for how to piece each of the blocks using the original mosaic piecing technique, as well as more accessible modern techniques. The traditional technique used to piece the blocks is known as 'Mosaic patchwork' and is a time-consuming method requiring the use of paper for templates. Some of the paper templates still remain in the coverlet and provide tantalising glimpses of printed and hand written text including bills, letters and printed text as well as hand drawn designs for the quilt. Quilt historian, Bridget Long, explores the fascinating history surrounding the coverlet and its discovery by the Quilter's Guild. Experienced quilt author, Susan Briscoe, explores how a replica quilt was painstakingly reproduced using the original mosaic piecing technique. There is information about the original fabrics used to create the coverlet and what kind of modern fabrics lend themselves best to recreating the quilt, using a variety of different techniques. This makes it perfect for the more experienced quilter looking for a challenge, as well as anyone fascinated by the history of this traditional craft.

**SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER** **RADIO 4 BOOK OF THE WEEK** The Hare with Amber Eyes meets The History of the World in 100 Objects: an eloquent history of the language of sewing. For the mothers of the disappeared in 1970s Argentina, protest was difficult. Every Thursday they marched in front of government buildings wearing headscarves embroidered with the names of their lost children. Through sewing, they found a way to campaign. In Tudor England Mary, Queen of Scots was under house arrest and her letters were censored, so she sewed secret treason into her needlework to communicate with the world outside. From the political propaganda of the Bayeux Tapestry and First World War soldiers with PTSD, to the maps sewn by schoolgirls in the New World, Threads of Life stretches from medieval France to contemporary Mexico, from a POW camp in Singapore to a family attic in Scotland. It is a chronicle of identity, protest, memory, power and politics told through the stories of the men and women, over centuries and across continents, who have used the language of sewing to make their voices heard, even in the most desperate of circumstances. In an eloquent blend of history and memoir, Threads of Life is an evocative and moving book about the need we all have to tell our story. 'Threads of Life is a beautifully considered book . . . Clare Hunter mixes the personal with the political with moving results.' TRACY CHEVALIER

Delight a child with a colourful crocheted or knitted Octo. Octos' twisty tentacles are calming and comforting - and they feel a bit like mum's umbilical cord. THE DANISH OCTO BOOK is the official book on the adorable knitted and crocheted octopus puppets that have become a huge phenomenon in Denmark and is now spreading like wildfire across the globe. With tentacles reminding babies and young children of an umbilical cord, what started as a means to soothe and calm premature babies in hospitals has now become a natural presence in lots of Danish homes, and turned into an unstoppable movement with Octo groups forming all over the world. But this is only the beginning. With the octopuses having showed similar effects with older babies, the Octo movement is about to reach a whole new magnitude. It all started with one octopus-obsessed dad who, when his daughter was born premature, got hold of a small octopus-shaped puppet for her. At the hospital, people soon noticed that the little girl was clutching onto the puppet's tentacles, looking calmer and more secure. It didn't take long till two volunteers started crocheting similar puppets for the neonatal units at three hospitals. This is how the Danish Octo Project was born. Today, this association of volunteers has many ambassadors in the country, supplying Octos for babies at every hospital in Denmark. THE DANISH OCTO BOOK tells the story of this fascinating international phenomenon, but also contains lots of cute and inspiring knitting and crocheting patterns to help parents and guardians make their own octopuses. Written in collaboration with The Danish Octo Project, this small, lovely book is the original and official book on this new movement. Combining the Danish way of life with the mindfulness of knitting, this is the ideal book for parents, grandparents, and all those who want to cultivate their meditative passion for knitting, while at the same time creating the ultimate loving gift for a child.
