This one-of-a-kind resource for mental health professionals in multiple settings is a comprehensive guide to treatment issues unique to children and families who have a relationship with the foster care system. With a focus on understanding how to negotiate the child welfare system, the book identifies and addresses mental health and behavioral issues specific to this population and provides proven, effective treatment interventions. It brings together in one place the myriad of current resources available to help such children and families, and addresses situations that span removal from the home to kin or foster care, to reunification, adoption, or other permanent family connections. Broad in scope and depth, the text includes treatment issues not discussed elsewhere, such as how to cope with acting out in the foster home, how to draft a behavior modification plan, and how to maneuver through the court process. It delivers evidence-based guidelines for engaging and collaborating with multiple parties including other professionals, addressing crises, and assisting with transitions. The book covers assessment from the perspectives of the client, caseworker, and therapist, and discusses the use of medications, complications, and barriers to effective treatment. Strategies are also directed at such specific issues as sexual abuse, physical abuse, substance abuse, neglect, trauma, and attachment. Of special interest is a focus on the worldview of the parties involved in the child welfare system, including the child, the family, the birth parent, and the foster parent. Additionally, the text provides behavior modification plans that work and social skills training. Chapters weave case studies, ethical issues, multicultural concerns, and current research into a highly accessible guide.
From reviews: "Being a Nurse is a great resource for anyone starting out in their nursing careers. It offers sensible down to earth advice, drawing on the author's real life experience of what it is like to work as a Registered Nurse for the first time. The author tackles some really challenging topics, such as dealing with difficult situations/people, burnout, having a bad day (and importantly how to get over it!) as well as emphasising the many positives that nursing brings. She takes the new graduate through their nursing journey, from the first day on the job, to developing in confidence and how to work towards revalidation, taking a pragmatic, yet very readable approach. This would make a great gift for any soon to graduate or recently qualified nurse." Liz Williams, Assistant Professor, Year 2 Clinical Skills, University of Nottingham Being a Nurse will help both student nurses and newly qualified nurses in their progression from graduation to revalidation. Packed full of personal accounts, hints and tips, the book provides advice to new starters on dealing with the challenges of being a nurse. It covers important topics such as first-day nerves, the value of teamwork, how to avoid burnout, coping with a bad day and how to know when you're ready to progress. The author takes a jargon-free, supportive approach that aims to help you develop your confidence as a nurse so that you in turn can offer the best care for your patients. Lauren Philpott recently qualified as a registered nurse and has drawn on her own experience to write "the book I wish I'd had". In the words of one reviewer, "it's like she's taking you by the hand and helping you through the transition that she went through herself". It takes a special sort of person to be a nurse and, of course, starting a new career can be a daunting prospect for anyone - this book will prepare you for the transition from student to registered nurse and help you make the most of your time as a newly qualified nurse.

Michelle Williams is young and attractive, she has close family ties as well as a busy social life - but she is far from usual. She is a mortuary technician and her job involves dealing with those things in life that many people do not wish to experience directly. Yet life in the mortuary is neither gruesome nor sad. Told with good humour and common sense, we are introduced to a host of characters - the pathologists, many of them eccentric, some downright mad; the undertakers, the hospital porters and the man from the coroner's office who sings to Michelle every morning. The incidents too ensure that no two days are ever the same. From the tragic to the hilarious they include: The fitness fanatic who was run over as he did pressups in the road on a dark night The decapitated motorcyclist The guide dog who led his owner on to the railway tracks - and left him there The forty stone man for whom an entire refrigerated lorry had to be hired because he wouldn't fit in the mortuary cooler Over the course of her first year Michelle has to deal with situations and emotions that few of us will ever experience, and does so while retaining a sense of humour and a sense of perspective.

This richly illustrated book provides a detailed description of the gross anatomy, light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, and electron microscopy of the adipose organ, which comprises subcutaneous and visceral fat depots. Findings in mice of differing genetic backgrounds (obesity prone and resistant) and maintained in standard and various physiologic and pathologic conditions are presented. The latter conditions include chronic cold exposure, warm exposure, fasting, pregnancy-lactation, and obesity. Features of the fetal adipose organ are described in a separate chapter, and results from transgenic mice are also presented when relevant. The human adipose organ is addressed in several chapters that include magnetic resonance and fetal findings. Most of the results regarding the adipose organ anatomy in different physiologic conditions are new, and the story of pink adipocytes (white-to-pink transdifferentiation) is quite innovative. The concept of using browning of the adipose organ as a therapeutic tool for obesity must take into consideration the anatomic and morphologic aspects described here, and the study of pink adipocytes could lead to a better comprehension of breast cancer tumor biology. This book will be of interest to all scientists who deal with obesity and related disorders.

In the evolution of the nursing profession, the phrases nursing care, therapeutic care, caring for others, and related expressions are used by nurses to describe their professional service to others. Members of our society have different thoughts and role expectations about these phrases in relation to the kind of care they receive from nurses. Furthermore, these expressions hold different meanings for nurses in their various care-giving roles, such as to individual clients, families, and community groups they serve. The concept of care is probably one of the least understood ideas used by professional and non-professional people, yet it is probably one of the most important concepts to be understood by human groups. It is a word with multiple social usages in the American culture, and has other meanings in other world cultures. It is time that we study the implicit and explicit meanings associated with the concepts of care and caring so that we can reduce their ambiguities.
