In this book the author describes in detail the history, construction, and examination potential of the slit lamp. In particular, however, he presents a new approach - videography - that allows the ophthalmologist to document all eye diseases with the slit lamp and a video camera in a practicable, rapid, and affordable manner. The necessary methods, techniques, and equipment, including converging, diverging, and contact lenses, are clearly explained in the text and four didactic videos. The 20 most important videographic settings are described, and "recipes" for their use are presented, along with diagnostic tips. The accompanying collection of clinical images represents the world's first ever general atlas of ophthalmology from the perspective of the slit lamp. It is the author's hope that this introduction to ophthalmological videography, with its many images never previously produced with a slit lamp, will stimulate others to exploit the approach's potential.

Introductory chapters discuss the anatomy, pathophysiology, and imaging of PEDs, highlighting how especially the increasing use of spectral domain OCT enables even small PEDs to be detected and followed over time. The diverse forms of PED are then described, with explanation of how they may hint at the underlying pathology or even be pathognomonic when considered in conjunction with other clinical features. New insights are provided into the characteristics of the various forms of PED, and predictors of complications - such as rip of the PED - are discussed. It is clearly explained how knowledge of the different types of PED and their underlying diseases can assist in creating an appropriate individualized follow-up and therapy scheme for each patient.

This book explains how to use intravitreal steroids optimally in the management of patients with intraocular inflammation (uveitis) and macular edema. The rationale for this treatment approach is first explained by examining the pathophysiology of these disease entities, with particular attention to the major role of inflammatory processes. Devices for the delivery of steroids to the eye are discussed, and guidance provided on the role of imaging studies before, during, and after steroid therapy. The value of different steroidal approaches is then considered in detail. Other topics addressed include the use of steroids as a surgical adjunct and within a combination strategy. Uveitis and macular edema are common sight-threatening diseases or complications of diabetes and retinal vein occlusion for which no adequate treatment was available until recently. Both trainees and practitioners will find Intravitreal Steroids to be an invaluable aid in combating these blinding diseases.

Sub- or preretinal hemorrhage involving the macula is a typical complication in a variety of ocular diseases, including age-related macular degeneration, arterial macroaneurysm, Valsalva retinopathy, and trauma. However, there is currently no consensus regarding the ideal treatment for macular hemorrhage. The purpose of this book on macular hemorrhage is twofold: it aims both to impart valuable information on pathophysiology, risk factors, diagnostic aspects, and prognostic criteria under different conditions and to provide a systematic overview of therapeutic approaches that cover the most important situations a vitreoretinal surgeon might encounter when treating patients with this disorder. Case presentations, clinical photographs, and an extensive review of the literature supplement the important information on clinical decision making, surgical techniques, and typical pitfalls and invite the reader to explore the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to the management of macular hemorrhage.

The pathobiology of vitreous and vitreoretinal disorders is discussed within the context of derangements of normal biology and of a shared basic pathobiology. With emphasis on therapeutics, this book highlights not only the advances in vitreo-retinal surgery of today with text and video recordings of surgery, but also the non-surgical approaches of the future, namely pharmacologic vitreolysis. Vitreous: In Health and Disease examines such developmental and inherited disorders as dominant exudative vitreoretinopathy and Wagner's disease, connective tissue disorders, including Marfan's syndrome and Stickler syndrome, cellular invasion through trauma, inflammation, and neoplasia, and the effects of surgical intervention through vitrectomy, photocoagulation, cryopexy, and intravitreal injections. Clinicians will be able to use this text as a basic science reference manual and researchers will obtain a better understanding of the problems that confront clinicians, which should help them direct their research to the areas relevant to clinical problems that need development.
