Epochs of relative spiritual poverty alternate with periods of spiritual prosperity. In each century however there can be found spiritual torch-bearers, who showed the path to their contemporaries, who revealed to them Gods will; through them and around them the Divine, sacred inner of the Church could continue to be built and the Church could continue its creative work. The narrow monastic path of Saint Paissios of Moldavia (Velitchkovski) (1722 - 1794) was for the 18th century a spiritual achievement with the same degree of influence as the ascetic practices of Saint Sergius of Radonezh in the 14th century. Being inspired by the works of the holy Fathers, they, by Gods mercy, accumulated the most elevated personal spiritual experiences and transmitted them to hundreds of disciples. In this way the great saints have changed the spiritual climate of their epochs, filling it with the warmth and fire of the Holy Spirit. Archpriest Serge Chetverikov wrote about Saint Paissios: Even if the entire work of Elder Paissios consisted in just being an example of sanctity, creating a monastic communal brotherhood according to the rules of the holy Fathers and correcting the translations of the works of the holy Fathers, it still would be a great contribution to the Church, monasticism and society. However, Elder Paissios has accomplished much more than that: he created a school of spiritual life, he kindled the hearts of many with love for the spiritual life and he inspired the monks to pursue the inner, monastic, spiritual work. Owing to his influence there have been amongst the Orthodox monks many remarkable ascetics, who fully assimilated the admonitions and the instruction of Elder Paissios. The followers of St. Paissios had much influence not only on their fellow-monks, but also on laymen from all the layers of society, including those highly educated in the cultural, scientific and theological areas. Having started in the second half of the 18th century, this particular spiritual tendency continued its development until the tragic events of the October revolution in Russia at the beginning of the 20th century. The present work is based on several biographies of Elder Paissios, including his autobiography. Most of all the work of Archpriest Serge Chetverikov 'Moldavian Elder Paissios Velichkovski, his life, teaching and his influence on the Orthodox regular clergy' has been used. The issues which are dealt with in the present book are still actual today.

From sermons and clerical reports to personal stories of faith, this book of translated primary documents reveals the lived experience of Orthodox Christianity in 19th- and early 20th-century Russia. These documents allow us to hear the voices of educated and uneducated writers, of clergy and laity, nobles and merchants, workers and peasants, men and women, Russians and Ukrainians. Orthodoxy emerges here as a multidimensional and dynamic faith. Beyond enhancing our understanding of Orthodox Christianity as practiced in Imperial Russia, this thoughtfully edited volume offers broad insights into the relationship between religious narrative and social experience and reveals religion's central place in the formation of world views and narrative traditions.

""You shall be perfect, even as your Father Who is in the heavens is perfect."" (Mt 5:48) These words of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ represent one of the most daunting of the commandments he has given his followers. But how are we to accomplish such a lofty task, living in a world full of turmoil, distractions, and challenges to our spiritual progress? In simple but powerful language, Discussion at a Monastery addresses questions about the meaning of Orthodox Christian monasticism, and of the spiritual life in general, based on the real-life experiences of a contemporary Greek Orthodox monk and his fellow spiritual laborers. Far from being suited only to monastics, however, this profound little book contains deep spiritual insights that will illumine the souls of all readers. At the same time, it will challenge anyone who is interested in developing a clearer understanding of the nature of the spiritual life-which is fundamentally a life of prayer-to first develop a clearer understanding of his or her own inner nature. "Monk Macarius is a monk of the Holy Cenobitic Monastery of the Dormition of the Theotokos in Penteli, Attica, Greece."

Christianity arrived early in Egypt, brought-according to tradition-by Saint Mark the Evangelist, who became the first patriarch of Alexandria. The Coptic Orthodox Church has flourished ever since, with millions of adherents both in Egypt and in Coptic communities around the world. Since its split from the Byzantine Church in 451, the Coptic Church has proudly maintained its early traditions, and influence from outside has been minimal: the liturgy is still sung to unique rhythms in Coptic, a late stage of the same ancient Egyptian language that is inscribed in hieroglyphs on temple walls and papyri. Dr. Otto Meinardus, a leading authority on the history of the Coptic Church, here revises, updates, and combines his renowned studies Christian Egypt, Ancient and Modern (AUC Press, 1965, 1977) and Christian Egypt, Faith and Life (AUC Press, 1970) into a new, definitive, one-volume history, surveying the twenty centuries of existence of one of the oldest churches in the world.

Sociocultural anthropologists have taken increasing interest in the global communities established by Roman Catholic and Protestant churches, but the many streams of Eastern Christianity have so far been neglected. "Eastern Christians in Anthropological Perspective" fills this gap in the literature. The essays in this pioneering collection examine the primary distinguishing features of the Eastern traditions - iconography, hymnology, ritual, and pilgrimage - through meticulous ethnographic analysis. Particular attention is paid to the revitalization of Orthodox and Greek Catholic churches that were repressed under Marxist-Leninist regimes.

Asian Shame and Addiction - Suffering in Silence (Hardcover): Sam Louie Asian Shame and Addiction - Suffering in Silence (Hardcover)
Sam Louie
R583 Discovery Miles 5 830 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

Many Asians are drowning in shame and addictions with no way out. Is this any different from a traditional Westerner? I would say very much so. Shame is embedded in the Asian way of thinking, behaving, and interacting. If you do not understand the cultural history of shame and its underpinnings, then you will have a hard time understanding the mindset of typical Asians, let alone the stranglehold of shame in their midst. This book is geared towards any Christian pastor, leader, or parishioner who has a heart for reaching the Asian community. God's unconditional love is hard for many Asians to understand because of the shame that binds them. This book is to help you get to the heart of Asian Shame and some of the associated behaviors and addictions that result from a culture that inhibits healthy emotional expression. If you want healthy Christianity among Asians, you need to understand how to recognize and break this cultural cycle of shame that has shackled millions of Asians to fall prey to the vices of gambling, infidelity, sex, out-of-control spending, over-eating, and other addictive behaviors.

Ecclesiastic Landscape of North Ethiopia brings together a selection of papers presented at the first International Workshop of the project Ethio-SPaRe: Cultural Heritage of Christian Ethiopia, Salvation, Preservation and Research (2009-2014, 7th Research Framework Programme IDEAS, ERC Starting Grant 240720), held in Hamburg in July 2011. Project members and invited scholars, all with firsthand experience in Ethiopian manuscript studies, explored the spheres of influence in the historical monastic landscape of the North Ethiopian highlands. Case studies dedicated to prominent or little known individual sites completed the programme. The essays in this collection, edited by Denis Nosnitsin, are of great interest to both researchers and students of Ethiopian Studies, African History, Christian Orient and History of Religion.

Voices from Dabra Zamaddo presents three major sources on the history of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church and its monasticism: two hagiographical histories (gadlat), one of Abba Bartalomewos and one of Abba Yohannes, founders of the famous monastery in Lasta, Wallo, and a collection of forty-five miracles of Mary worked in Dabra Zamaddu and the surrounding region. The sources testify to the monasterys spiritual impact on the local population and to its share of the sufferings inflicted by the sixteenth-century revolt and invasion of the Islamic forces of Iman Ahmad from the east, and by the overwhelming Oromo migration from the south. As narrated in the gadlat, the story of how the monasterys manuscripts escaped these devastations despite a lack of protection is a miracle indeed. A number of the miracles of Mary contained here can be traced to other sources or are repeat miracles told in the two gadlat. The majority, however, are unique and of high historical value. Only these miracles contain, for example, the information that the region around the monastery was in total darkness for days due to extraordinarily severe weather during that time. The sources are edited, translated, and commented upon by Getatchew Haile, who has relied on his decades long study of Ge'ez and Amharic manuscripts and the resulting expertise to supply the translations with the necessary annotations.

In the current age where democratic and egalitarian ideals have preeminence, Eastern Orthodox Christianity, among other hierarchically organized religious traditions, faces the challenging questions: "Why is hierarchy maintained as the model of organizing the church, and what are the theological justifications for its persistence?" These questions are especially significant for historically and contemporarily understanding how Orthodox Christians negotiate their spiritual ideals with the challenges of their social and ecclesiastical realities. To critically address these questions, this book offers four case studies of historically disparate Byzantine theologians from the sixth to the fourteenth-centuries-Dionysius the Areopagite, Maximus the Confessor, Niketas Stethatos, and Nicholas Cabasilas-who significantly reflect on the relationship between spiritual authority, power, and hierarchy in theoretical, liturgical, and practical contexts. Although Dionysius the Areopagite has been the subject of much scholarly interest in recent years, the applied theological legacy of his development of "hierarchy" in the Christian East has not before been explored. Relying on a common Dionysian heritage, these Byzantine authors are brought into a common dialogue to reveal a tradition of constructing authentic ecclesiastical hierarchy as foremost that which communicates divinity.

A Small Taste of Jonathan's Corner (Paperback): C.J.S. Hayward A Small Taste of Jonathan's Corner (Paperback)

This book, like many others, is a collection of works the author has written. In other collections, he has tried to give as much as possible about a given topic. "The Best of Jonathan's Corner," available via searching on Amazon, has a collection of favorite works that totals to about 700 pages. (The author is somewhat prolific.) This collection is meant to be the opposite of that encyclopedia approach. It's meant to give a little taste of what, exactly, some people have found interesting. But it is meant not to be a long and daunting read, only short and inviting. A sort of elevator pitch, as far as books go. If you like it, you are welcome to explore more works by the same author; they can be found by searching Amazon for "The Collected Works of C.J.S. Hayward." The author is intentionally not trying to convince you of what so-and-so said about one of works, or what his credentials are, but merely give a tiny slice of carefully chosen works work. If you read these short works and want more, then you will know this without being told. It is hoped that you will like them but that decision remains with you.
