PanPastel Colours are professional grade soft pastel colours packed in a unique pan format (cake-like) so that they can be mixed and applied like paint. They are very low dust for a cleaner working environment. All 80 PanPastel Colours are made using a unique manufacturing process requiring minimal binder and fillers, resulting in rich, ultra soft and low dust formulations.Only professional artists' grade pigments are used for the most concentrated colours possible. The colours have excellent lightfastness and are fully erasable. Each pan contains 40%* more material than the average pastel stick, and yields approx. 4-5 times more coverage than sticks.
They contain only the purest medium fine ground artists' pigments, which are in the highest possible concentration. Contrastingly, the binding agent content, is kept to a minimum, which ensures a stable compound. In order to guarantee the highest quality it is necessary to manufacture Schmincke pastels using special recipes which avoid the use of machinery during manufacture. 'Worm extruders' form the pre-kneaded dough into round skeins, which are then detached by hand and cut in a wirestrung frame. The damp sticks have to dry for around eight days before they can be labelled and packed by hand. This is a costly and time consuming process, however it is the only way Schmincke can guarantee homogenous quality and smoothness in all the production cycles.

The Sennelier oil pastel is a product that makes use of the components used in all Sennelier colours: top quality pigments, an extremely pure synthetic binding medium and mineral wax. The pigments are ground with an inert, non-siccative binding medium that does not oxidise and that has no effect upon either film stability or surface. This base is then mixed with wax (neutral pH). The balance of this mix provides Sennelier oil pastels with a unique unctuousness and a creamy texture that allows for a great deal of freedom in pictorial expression.

The pastels are made in Northumberland and contain only pure pigments in a cycle of related hues, instead of adding white or black to the colours. The result is intense, vibrant colour not muddied by the blending of colours.

Conte crayons with their 6x6mm cross-section offer a range of 84 colours, 14 tones of which are specifically designed for sketching. The crayons are very soft to use and are manufactured using natural pigments (iron oxide, carbon black, titanium dioxide), clay (kaolin) and a binder (cellulose ether), which are then baked after being extruded and dried. The degree of baking varies the grade (hardness:H/ softness:B) of the black and white crayons.

The exceptional diameter of the Conté à Paris pastel pencil (5 mm) lead gives genuine freedom of creation and has an unrivalled feel. The pastel is a perfect pencil companion to soft pastel because it's lead is slightly harder with less pigment. It is preferable to Conté soft pastels and crayons when detail is required for small and medium sized formats. In contrast with soft pastel, pastel pencil should not be added in successive layers of colours, but used as pure colours laid out in patchwork fashion side by side (so as not to dull the shades).
Rembrandt soft pastels owe their quality to the close collaboration with professional artists, combined with traditional expertise and more than a century of experience in the manufacture of pastels. Each colour is made according to a unique formula and the necessary raw materials go through very strict controls for each new batch. Rembrandt pastels have for many years been the most commonly used pastels in the world, in part due to their unique characteristics. The softness has been chosen so that the pastels can easily transfer their colour while at the same time not fall apart or turn to powder. The Rembrandt pastels owe their very high coloured intensity and colour purity to the superior choice of pigments and the high pigment concentration. Only through a strict selection of the pigments used can the best combination of the characteristics be achieved. No harmful pigments are used. |
