What happened to the church that radically changed the world in the first three centuries A.D.? Why does the public at large not want much to do with the church today and why does that church seem to be at war with itself? This book examines what some of the answers might be and places them in the unusual context of witchcraft; not the witchcraft of ritualistic occult practice but a more subtle and pervasive kind that calls for a reassessment of how we lead our communities of faith in order to avoid falling under its influence.

The Servant Organization for Jesus - A Framework for Church Excellence (Paperback): Drexel T. Brunson Phd, Ed Dean The Servant Organization for Jesus - A Framework for Church Excellence (Paperback)
Drexel T. Brunson Phd, Ed Dean
R314 Discovery Miles 3 140 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

This book is not about church doctrine. The purpose of this book is to provide a leadership and management framework which can improve church operations through the implementation of time-tested and proven practices which we call The Servant Organization for Jesus Framework. If you are a pastor, or a deacon, or if you are in some level of church administration, you should read this book. We predict that this book will give the reader insight as to how church organizations can be improved significantly. It is our opinion that church organizations, like all other organizations of human endeavor, experience common organizational problems. However, the church organization experiences unique operational challenges because of their spiritual nature, coupled with the fact that church organizations are volunteer organizations. We also believe church organizations are empowered by the Holy Spirit to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ to a dying world. The Servant Organization for Jesus can be used by the Holy Spirit to better fulfill the Great Commission. All that is needed for positive change to occur in church operational performance is a willingness for church leaders to recognize that there may be a better way to do things. The Four Cornerstones of the foundation which support the Framework for The Servant Organization for Jesus have been successfully used in the private and public sectors. All of the components of the Framework are not only referenced in scripture, they are also referenced in the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award Criteria for Achieving Performance Excellence. It is our humble suggestion that The Servant Organization for Jesus presents a framework to assist church organizations in doing things better. Much, however, is at stake. There are souls to be saved through the preaching of Christ's salvation plan. The Great Commission must be followed. How church organizations can better carry out the Great Commission is the subject of this book.

The Role of the Nun in Nineteenth-Century America - Variations on the International Theme (Paperback): Mary Ewens Ph. D. The Role of the Nun in Nineteenth-Century America - Variations on the International Theme (Paperback)
Mary Ewens Ph. D.
R384 Discovery Miles 3 840 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

The Second Vatican Council (1963-65) asked Catholic sisters to adapt their rules to the needs of modern culture. But how could they know what to keep and what to discard, if they did not understand the origins and functions of their rules? To answer these questions, Sister Ewens studied church laws of the past and their influence on the present, and analyzed sisters' roles in nineteenth-century American society. She wanted to help religious communities, including her own Dominican congregation, (of Sinsinwa, WI) to understand their rules and roles, so as to better discern future directions. Along the way she discovered that many rules dated back to medieval times. She chronicles sisters' struggles to live those obsolete rules in pioneer settings; their contributions to education, nursing and social services; their encounters with bigotry; how they transformed the public perception of Catholicism; the dangers of wearing the habit in public; and much, much more. Vatican officials who question American sisters' roles today could learn from this book why sisters' lives had to evolve in response to the call of the Council.

Filling Empty Pulpits - Developing Homegrown Leaders (Paperback): Norman R. Lindsay Filling Empty Pulpits - Developing Homegrown Leaders (Paperback)

The primary objective of this volume is to convey the research, observations, and recommendations resulting from my doctoral project. The focus is the preparation of pastors for effectual, long-term service in rural churches. The research for this endeavor centered on the churches and ministers of The Assemblies of God. Although the study took place in Alaska, the data suggests the recommended process could be adapted to a wide range of cultural environments. The study involved assessing the effectual development of Alaska Native pastors with the intent of making recommendations based on the data which was collected and analyzed. Inquiry focused on cultural, organizational, delivery system, and curricular factors pertinent to pastoral development in rural Alaska. I examined Alaskan educational institutions and religious organizations for relevant models regarding preparation of pastors in rural Alaska. Data collection included surveys administered to representative rural Alaskan congregations. Additional information came from interviews with Alaska Native pastors, village elders, as well as institutional and denominational educators. The presentation of my findings to denominational leaders provided a foundation for collaboration leading to changes deemed appropriate to the effectual preparation of Native pastors for rural Alaska. The final section of the book reveals my recommendations as well as recent developments reflecting those observations.

The Power of the Ordinary - The Servant Principle (Paperback): Dr Leo Salvador The Power of the Ordinary - The Servant Principle (Paperback)
Dr Leo Salvador
R278 Discovery Miles 2 780 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

Servant leadership, both in biblical example and in today's practice, gives evidence that being a servant does come first. "Servant" does not merely modify leadership, it is the very way to leadership. Serving those you choose to lead is an expression of leadership, not the position you hold, or the title you bear. We'll develop this in several ways, beginning with the concept of Robert Greenleaf: The servant-leader is servant first. It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead. The difference manifests itself in the care taken by the servant-first to make sure that other people's highest priority needs are being served. Think of servant leadership as a two-layered image. On the bottom--the foundation--is the rich presentation of service as described on the previous pages. Laid over the top, in perfect harmony with servanthood, is an almost equally rich portrait of "leadership." Together, they form the servant-leadership principle: a vision of leadership in the pattern of Christ. Without the element of service, leadership would forfeit its Christian mooring. Without the perspective of leadership, servitude loses its direction, its ability to imprint followership, and its potential to fulfill the Christian mission.

English summary: Thomas Forstner sheds light on the remarkable changes that catholic priests had been exposed to during the first half of the 20th century. Forstner describes their every-day life and explores how the modernity shaped the young stuff's recruiting, instruction, and the clergy's social and mental condition. The author focusses on how members of the hierarchy managed with deviant behavior, and on how the clergy managed with the greatest challenge in these times: National Socialism and war.
