The Beatles Are Coming covers the Beatles first visit to the United States and the events leading up to the group's arrival on February 7, 1964. It is the most thorough and accurate book ever published on how Beatlemania evolved in America. The book details why Capitol Records turned down the Beatles four times before finally agreeing to release their records. It tells the stories of two small companies, Vee-Jay and Swan, who issued the group's records without success in 1963. It details the American media coverage of the Beatles in late 1963, when Beatlemania was viewed as a curious fad happening in England that could never catch on in the United States. It explains how the Beatles were booked for The Jack Paar Program and The Ed Sullivan Show, as well as two concerts at Carnegie Hall. The book concludes with stories and pictures of the Beatles historic first U.S. visit in February, 1964. The book contains over 450 images, including many previously unpublished photos of the Beatles. Foreword by Walter Cronkite.

Provincial punk iconoclasts turned pan-global maverick legends of music and art, the Mekons walk tall into their second quarter century - still impossible to pigeonhole, still kicking against the pricks, still burrowing feverishly beneath the soft white belly of the rock beast. Hello Cruel World contains the lyrics to 125 Mekons songs, many of them illustrated by the band in stunning fashion. Also included are numerous handwritten drafts of songs (often very different from the final versions) and a portfolio of candid pictures of the band on the road by photographer Anne L. Lehman. Gleeful and despairing, withering and poetic, sexy and poignant, rollicking and grim, the Mekons' expressive lyrics and art offer rich insights into the band's collective creative alchemy, fierce humor, and caustic world view.

`If it's me and your granny on bongos, it's The Fall.' As legendary frontman of post-punk outfit The Fall, Mark E. Smith was known as much for his mercurial temperament as his exceptional musical talent. Famous for his singular way with words both onstage and off, his road to the music hall of fame was paved with brilliant one-liners, eccentric behaviour, and the dozens of members of The Fall he ejected along the way. Collecting his wit and wisdom for the first time and featuring an introduction from Stuart Maconie, Messing Up the Paintwork is a tribute to a musical icon described as `untouchably cool' (Lauren Laverne), an `uncompromising musical maverick' (Tim Burgess) and `a man shouting from a prison window' (Frank Skinner). And it's a book for the fans who will miss him terribly.

The Rock History Reader is an eclectic compilation of readings that tells the history of rock as it has been received and explained as a social and musical practice throughout its six decade history. The readings range from the vivid autobiographical accounts of such rock icons as Ronnie Spector and David Lee Roth to the writings of noted rock critics like Lester Bangs and Chuck Klosterman. It also includes a variety of selections from media critics, musicologists, fanzine writers, legal experts, sociologists and prominent political figures. Many entries also deal specifically with distinctive styles such as Motown, punk, disco, grunge, rap and indie rock. Each entry includes headnotes, which place it in its historical context.

This second edition includes new readings on the early years of rhythm & blues and rock n roll, as well as entries on payola, mods, the rise of FM rock, progressive rock and the PMRC congressional hearings. In addition, there is a wealth of new material on the 2000s that explores such relatively recent developments as emo, mash ups, the explosion of internet culture and new media, and iconic figures like Radiohead and Lady Gaga.

With numerous readings that delve into the often explosive issues surrounding censorship, copyright, race relations, feminism, youth subcultures, and the meaning of musical value, The Rock History Reader continues to appeal to scholars and students from a variety of disciplines.

LZ-'75 - Across America with LED Zeppelin (Paperback, Edition): Stephen Davis LZ-'75 - Across America with LED Zeppelin (Paperback, Edition)
Stephen Davis 1
R52 Discovery Miles 520 Within 7 - 13 working days

Stephen Davis's brilliantly written personal account of criss-crossing America with Led Zeppelin on their 1975 tour. A warts-and-all snapshot of the world's biggest hard-rock band at their peak. As a young rock writer Stephen Davis landed the ultimate commission - touring America with Led Zeppelin. This is a personal account by Davis of his journey, which saw him crossing the country with the band on board the Starship, their famous Boeing passenger jet, complete with deep shag purple carpet, electric pianos, girlfriends and star-struck hangers-on. This is also the story of one of the hardest-living bands in the world at their peak. For Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, John Paul Jones and John Bonham, the most beautiful women in America tear their spangled jackets from them and riots start outside their gigs. LZ-'75 captures a few perfect months in rock, when Led Zeppelin epitomised the free-living rock dream, but, like Icarus, their wings were already beginning to melt. It wouldn't be long before John Bonham died of a vodka overdose, and punk killed their brand of monumental rock. With it's up-close-and-personal accounts of band members, managers, groupies, fans and drug-dealers, there's a lot of Almost Famous about this book - Led Zep's 1975 tour is in fact the very one on which Cameron Crowe's film was based. Stephen Davis was barely twenty in 1975, but now he is recognised as one of the best rock writers in the world. He is the author of the mega-selling Hammer of the Gods - a biography of Led Zeppelin. He recently unearthed his notebooks of the 1975 tour - which he didn't use for Hammer of the Gods - to write LZ-'75. LZ-'75: Across America with Led Zeppelin is a wonderful and unique thing - a beautifully succinct account of a single moment in rock, when no lyric was too far-fetched, no drink went undrunk and no expense was ever, ever spared. It's a moment that will never be repeated.

In 1978 esteemed concert promoter Harvey Goldsmith put on the single biggest, paid one day concert in UK history at the Blackbushe Aerodrome in Surrey with some estimates putting the audience figure at around 250,000. Goldsmith still considers it the high point of his career: "The best event I've been involved in was a performance from Bob Dylan and Eric Clapton at Blackbushe Aerodrome in 1978. It was amazing to see so many people come out to enjoy The Picnic. I think there was around 200,000 people. Even to this day, there's still a buzz about the event, which is extraordinary." Bob Dylan was experiencing a renewed commercial peak and had embarked upon a year-long world tour. The European leg included six nights at London's 17,000 capacity Earl's Court in early June that sold out in hours. Due to demand Goldsmith quickly organised the outdoor show that was dubbed The Picnic At Blackbushe which concluded the European leg of the tour. The line-up was augmented with Eric Clapton, Joan Armatrading and New Wave artist Graham Parker & The Rumour plus Lake and Merger. Demand was phenomenal and Dylan was reportedly paid a performance fee of one million. The largest for a single artist at that time and a staggering amount for 1978. With Dylan having not played the UK mainland for twelve years, his return to Britain was the event of the year. Anyone who was anyone made the effort to be there including New Wave artists such as John Cooper Clarke and members of the Clash and other musicians such as Ringo Starr and Barbara Dickson. Many other well-known celebrities of the day also made the trip to Blackbushe including comedian Billy Connolly, actress Jenny Agutter and Bianca Jagger. Now you can relive the magic of Blackbushe in this stupendous coffee table style deluxe book. Crammed full of previously unpublished, glorious colour photos of Dylan, Clapton, Armatrading and Parker; the book also covers each performance with memorabilia, stories, reviews, anecdotes and memories from the artists and audience alike.

HOLD TIGHT is the book that kick started the 'Grime Library'. Bursting into bookshops in July 2017 to rave reviews and a sold out event at Rough Trade East, HOLD TIGHT paved the way for Grime-related books such as Wiley's Eskiboy (Penguin 2017), Dan Hancox's Inner City Pressure (4th Estate 2018), and DJ Target's Grime Kids (Trapeze 2018, now being made into a television series). This new edition of HOLD TIGHT features new chapters for 2018, a brand new introduction from Boakye and a brand new cover. Celebrating over sixty key songs that make up Grime's DNA, Jeffrey Boakye explores the meaning of the music and why it has such resonance in the UK. Boakye also examines the representation of masculinity in the music and the media that covers it. Both a love letter to Grime and an investigation into life as a black man in Britain today, HOLD TIGHT is insightful, very funny and stacked with sentences you'll want to pull up and read again and again.

Serge Gainsbourg - View from the Exterior (Paperback): Alan Clayson Serge Gainsbourg - View from the Exterior (Paperback)
Alan Clayson
R61 Discovery Miles 610 Within 7 - 13 working days

Serge Gainsbourg is synonymous with "Je T'Aime...Moi Non Plus" on which he and Jane Birkin simulated the sounds of sexual congress. But this 1969 UK no. 1 was but a sideshow in an impressive career as a composer, novelist, film director and actor. The first full biography in English, Alan Clayson's book reveals the entire sordid story. Gainsbourg was an inlikely pop star and an even less likely lover of icons like Birkin, Brigitte Bardot and Catherine Deneuve. But from humble beginnings he went on to write songs for Dionne Warwick and Sacha Distel. A natural at courting controversy, his outrages included a scandalous arrangement of "La Marseillaise" among songs on female masturbation, incest, Nazism, and, in 1988, a rapping ode to oral sex. He continued to be newsworthy the world over until his body's final rebellion at the age of 61, after a lifetime of violation.

From being transported by the sound of 'True Love' by Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly on the radio, as a small child living in condemned housing in ungentrified West London in the late 1950s, to going out to work as a postman humming 'Watching the Detectives' by Elvis Costello in 1977, Alan Johnson's life has always had a musical soundtrack. In fact music hasn't just accompanied his life, it's been an integral part of it. In the bestselling and award-winning tradition of This Boy, In My Life vividly transports us to a world that is no longer with us - a world of Dansettes and jukeboxes, of heartfelt love songs and heart-broken ballads, of smoky coffee shops and dingy dance halls. From Bob Dylan to David Bowie, from Lonnie Donnegan to Bruce Springsteen, all of Alan's favourites are here. As are, of course, his beloved Beatles, whom he has worshipped with undying admiration since 1963. But this isn't just a book about music. In My Life adds a fourth dimension to the story of Alan Johnson the man.

Popular music has always attracted the kind of morally bankrupt individuals who are too unhinged to hold down a proper job. And that's just as well. After all, if your local fishmonger told you he'd just snorted his father's ashes, you might think twice about doing business with him. But when Keith Richards says it, you think `Nice one, Keef!' and have a flick through your iPod to find `Honky Tonk Women'. From deeply suspect sexual politics to crackpot religions, musicians' elevated position in popular culture allows them to hold forth freely on subjects about which they know precious little. For the first time, Mind The Bollocks collects some of the finest stools of wisdom ever to fall from their foul, ill-educated mouths. Mind The Bollocks also digs beneath the culture of nonsense surrounding popular music and asks: Are the X-Factor auditions all they appear to be? Is there really a musical frequency that can make you soil yourself? And which world-renowned rock guitarist sliced his own penis off? All is revealed herein, with bonus satanic messages included if you read it backwards. Word count: 40,000
