Teresa, My Love - An Imagined Life of the Saint of Avila (Hardcover): Julia Kristeva Teresa, My Love - An Imagined Life of the Saint of Avila (Hardcover)
Julia Kristeva; Translated by Lorna Scott Fox
R719 R559 Discovery Miles 5 590 Save R160 (22%) Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Mixing fiction, history, psychoanalysis, and personal fantasy, Teresa, My Love turns a past world into a modern marvel, following Sylvia Leclercq, a French psychoanalyst, academic, and incurable insomniac, as she falls for the sixteenth-century Saint Teresa of Avila and becomes consumed with charting her life. Traveling to Spain, Leclercq, Julia Kristeva's probing alter ego, visits the sites and embodiments of the famous mystic and awakens to her own desire for faith, connection, and rebellion. One of Kristeva's most passionate and transporting works, Teresa, My Love interchanges biography, autobiography, analysis, dramatic dialogue, musical scores, and images of paintings and sculpture to engage the reader in Leclercq's-and Kristeva's-journey. Born in 1515, Teresa of Avila outwitted the Spanish Inquisition and was a key reformer of the Carmelite Order. Her experience of ecstasy, which she intimately described in her writings, released her from her body and led to a complete realization of her consciousness, a state Kristeva explores in relation to present-day political failures, religious fundamentalism, and cultural malaise. Incorporating notes from her own psychoanalytic practice, as well as literary and philosophical references, Kristeva builds a fascinating dual diagnosis of contemporary society and the individual psyche while sharing unprecedented insights into her own character.

This book hopes that it is as important as any of these questions.

The Catholic Enlightenment - The Forgotten History of a Global Movement (Paperback): Ulrich L. Lehner The Catholic Enlightenment - The Forgotten History of a Global Movement (Paperback)
Ulrich L. Lehner
R350 Discovery Miles 3 500 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

"Whoever needs an act of faith to elucidate an event that can be explained by reason is a fool, and unworthy of reasonable thought." This line, spoken by the notorious 18th-century libertine Giacomo Casanova, illustrates a deeply entrenched perception of religion, as prevalent today as it was hundreds of years ago. It is the sentiment behind the narrative that Catholic beliefs were incompatible with the Enlightenment ideals. Catholics, many claim, are superstitious and traditional, opposed to democracy and gender equality, and hostile to science. It may come as a surprise, then, to learn that Casanova himself was a Catholic. In The Catholic Enlightenment, Ulrich L. Lehner points to such figures as representatives of a long-overlooked thread of a reform-minded Catholicism, which engaged Enlightenment ideals with as much fervor and intellectual gravity as anyone. Their story opens new pathways for understanding how faith and modernity can interact in our own time. Lehner begins two hundred years before the Enlightenment, when the Protestant Reformation destroyed the hegemony Catholicism had enjoyed for centuries. During this time the Catholic Church instituted several reforms, such as better education for pastors, more liberal ideas about the roles of women, and an emphasis on human freedom as a critical feature of theology. These actions formed the foundation of the Enlightenment's belief in individual freedom. While giants like Spinoza, Locke, and Voltaire became some of the most influential voices of the time, Catholic Enlighteners were right alongside them. They denounced fanaticism, superstition, and prejudice as irreconcilable with the Enlightenment agenda. In 1789, the French Revolution dealt a devastating blow to their cause, disillusioning many Catholics against the idea of modernization. Popes accumulated ever more power and the Catholic Enlightenment was snuffed out. It was not until the Second Vatican Council in 1962 that questions of Catholicism's compatibility with modernity would be broached again. Ulrich L. Lehner tells, for the first time, the forgotten story of these reform-minded Catholics. As Pope Francis pushes the boundaries of Catholicism even further, and Catholics once again grapple with these questions, this book will prove to be required reading.

Theologies of Guadalupe - From the Era of Conquest to Pope Francis (Hardcover): Timothy Matovina Theologies of Guadalupe - From the Era of Conquest to Pope Francis (Hardcover)
Timothy Matovina
R452 Discovery Miles 4 520 Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Every Spanish-speaking country in Latin America and the Caribbean has its own national representation of the Virgin Mary who is credited with helping to spread Christianity. None of these is more prominent than the Virgin of Guadalupe, patroness of Mexico. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to a man named Juan Diego on the Hill of Tepeyac, just outside Mexico City, four times in 1531. The local bishop doubted his claim until an image of the Virgin appeared on Juan Diego's cloak. That cloak is now among the most popular religious icons in the Americas, and the Virgin of Guadalupe is among the most widely known of Marian apparitions. Our Lady of Guadalupe is also the only Marian apparition tradition in the Americas- and indeed in all of Roman Catholicism- that has since inspired a sustained series of published theological analyses. In Theologies of Guadalupe, Timothy Matovina explores the way theologians have understood Our Lady of Guadalupe and sought to assess and foster her impact on the lives of her devotees since the seventeenth century. He examines core theological topics in the Guadalupe tradition, developed in response to major events in Mexican history: conquest, attempts to Christianize native peoples, society-building, independence, and the demands for justice for marginalized groups. This book tells how, amidst the plentiful miraculous images of Christ, Mary, and the saints that dotted the sacred landscape of colonial New Spain, the Guadalupe cult rose above all others and was transformed from a local devotion into a regional, national, and then international phenomenon. Matovina traces the development of the theologies of Guadalupe from the colonial era to our own time, revealing how Christian ideas imported from Europe developed in dynamic interaction with the new contexts in which they took root.

The very idea of praying personal petitions aloud in front of others makes many people uncomfortable. Yet, those who have overcome their fears and tried this form of prayer are quick to express how rewarding they find it.

Rosalind Rinker has refined this form of shared-prayer, having practiced, lectured, and written about it for more than twenty-five years. She explains what it is and how, with the help of the Holy Spirit, it can lead to a new and more meaningful prayer life within a group, within your family, or in your own private devotion.

The Lawyer of the Church - Bishop Clemente de Jesus Munguia and the Clerical Response to the Mexican Liberal Reforma... The Lawyer of the Church - Bishop Clemente de Jesus Munguia and the Clerical Response to the Mexican Liberal Reforma (Paperback)
Pablo Mijangos y. Gonzalez
R882 R737 Discovery Miles 7 370 Save R145 (16%) Shipped within 7 - 12 working days

Mexico's Reforma, the mid-nineteenth-century liberal revolution, decisively shaped the country by disestablishing the Catholic Church, secularizing public affairs, and laying the foundations of a truly national economy and culture. The Lawyer of the Church is an examination of the Mexican clergy's response to the Reforma through a study of the life and works of Bishop Clemente de Jesus Munguia (1810-68), one of the most influential yet least-known figures of the period. By analyzing how Munguia responded to changing political and intellectual scenarios in defense of the clergy's legal prerogatives and social role, Pablo Mijangos y Gonzalez argues that the Catholic Church opposed the liberal revolution not because of its supposed attachment to a bygone past but rather because of its efforts to supersede colonial tradition and refashion itself within a liberal yet confessional state. With an eye on the international influences and dimensions of the Mexican church-state conflict, The Lawyer of the Church also explores how Mexican bishops gradually tightened their relationship with the Holy See and simultaneously managed to incorporate the papacy into their local affairs, thus paving the way for the eventual "Romanization" of Mexican Catholicism during the later decades of the century.

A devotional keepsake that focuses on Pope Francis s love for the Virgin Mary. ?This beautifully illustrated book highlights one of the main aspects of Pope Francis s spirituality: his veneration of the Virgin Mary. A valuable source of inspiration, this book includes a collection of quotes from his speeches, prayers, and tweets that directly refer to his worship of the Holy Mary. Jorge Mario Bergoglio s faith has always been marked by his strong devotion to the Mother of God; his first public act as Pope paid tribute to her in the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore. His admiration is reflected in his coat of arms that features a star (according to heraldic tradition, the star symbolizes the Virgin Mary, Mother of Christ and of the Church), and reaches a peak in the devotion to Mary Undoer of Knots, which is spreading worldwide. Pope Francis helps believers to see the Virgin Mary not just as a mother, but also a sister and friend who possesses countless virtues. Accompanied by photographs of the Pope in his daily life, the images offer a glimpse into many personal and public moments that reveal his Marian devotion, seen through visits to various shrines and celebrations dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Across God's Frontiers - Catholic Sisters in the American West, 1850-1920 (Paperback): Anne M. Butler Across God's Frontiers - Catholic Sisters in the American West, 1850-1920 (Paperback)
Anne M. Butler
R651 Discovery Miles 6 510 Shipped within 7 - 11 working days

Roman Catholic sisters first traveled to the American West as providers of social services, education, and medical assistance. In Across God's Frontiers, Anne M. Butler traces the ways in which sisters challenged and reconfigured contemporary ideas about women, work, religion, and the West; moreover, she demonstrates how religious life became a vehicle for increasing women's agency and power. Moving to the West introduced significant changes for these women, including public employment and thoroughly unconventional monastic lives. As nuns and sisters adjusted to new circumstances and immersed themselves in rugged environments, Butler argues, the West shaped them; and through their labors and charities, the sisters in turn shaped the West. These female religious pioneers built institutions, brokered relationships between Indigenous peoples and encroaching settlers, and undertook varied occupations, often without organized funding or direct support from the church hierarchy. A comprehensive history of Roman Catholic nuns and sisters in the American West, Across God's Frontiers reveals Catholic sisters as dynamic and creative architects of civic and religious institutions in western communities.
