Managing God's Higher Learning - U.S.-China Cultural Encounter and Canton Christian College (Lingnan University),... Managing God's Higher Learning - U.S.-China Cultural Encounter and Canton Christian College (Lingnan University), 1888-1952 (Hardcover, New)
Dong Wang
R2,182 Discovery Miles 21 820 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

Managing God's Higher Learning offers a distinct empirical study of Lingnan University and addresses issues of adaptation and integration. Author, Dong Wang, demonstrates that many aspects of Lingnan - governance, links with the local society, financial management, education for women - have either never been made the subject of scholarly discussion or are different from what we think we know about U.S.-China relations in the past. As the first co-educational institution of higher learning in China, Lingnan made monumental strides in the management of programs for women, a fact which confounds the assumptions made by China historians. The author argues that Lingnan's growth, resilience and success can partly be accounted for by entrepreneurial operations. Wang also contends that Lingnan found ways to adapt and "layer" a Christian presence at a time when the nationalization and secularization of higher education was making rapid headway. Based on information from archives located across the Pacific, this book will appeal to scholars of Chinese history as well as those interested in Sino-American relations.

Diary of a Dean (Paperback): Herbert I. London Diary of a Dean (Paperback)
Herbert I. London
R665 Discovery Miles 6 650 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

Diary of a Dean is a memoir of Herbert London's years at New York University. It follows his personal path from professor and ombudsman to dean of a new "experimental" college. The period in question parallels a tumultuous era in higher education. London's experiences placed him in the eye of the academic hurricane. Although there was considerable debate about the content and nature of higher education in this overheated period, London attempted to maintain a balance between a traditional devotion to the canon of western civilization and emerging technologies and innovations that permit a flexible delivery of education. Maintaining this balance, as London's words indicate, was not easy. There were pressures from many quarters including, most significantly, the polarization of the faculty. Serving as a dean in an experimental college and, at the same time, remaining devoted to a Matthew Arnoldian view of the curriculum was not something he anticipated as a youthful professor. But for anyone eager to learn about the evolution of higher education in the last few decades, this book is indispensable reading.

The Associate University Librarian Handbook - A Resource Guide (Hardcover, New): Bradford Lee Eden The Associate University Librarian Handbook - A Resource Guide (Hardcover, New)
Bradford Lee Eden
R2,047 Discovery Miles 20 470 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

The associate university librarian is tasked with running the various services and workflows of academic research libraries, allowing the head university librarian to focus on the acquisition of resources through fundraising and external public relations. Although the positions of assistant or associate university librarians and deans are considered a training ground for upward movement in the profession, there are surprisingly few mentoring experiences available. The Associate University Librarian Handbook: A Resource Guide looks to change that. Bradford Lee Eden has brought together a variety of helpful topics for university librarians. The first section provides a broad overview of the field and what it means to be an associate librarian. A section on managing change, a topic endemic to the academic library in these times, follows. The next section deals with the question of funding the library enterprise and managing resources, with chapters on how best to handle budget reductions, cultivating donors and donor relations, and managing a research function. The fourth section covers career management, and includes chapters on navigating the transition to university librarian. A concluding section deals with leadership and defining the future. Intended for both those in the position of associate university librarian and for those aspiring to get there, The Associate University Librarian Handbook will be a valuable tool and guide.

The Fall of the Faculty (Paperback): Benjamin Ginsberg The Fall of the Faculty (Paperback)
Benjamin Ginsberg
R668 Discovery Miles 6 680 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

Until very recently, American universities were led mainly by their faculties, which viewed intellectual production and pedagogy as the core missions of higher education. Today, as Benjamin Ginsberg warns in this eye-opening, controversial book, "deanlets"-administrators and staffers often without serious academic backgrounds or experience-are setting the educational agenda. The Fall of the Faculty examines the fallout of rampant administrative blight that now plagues the nation's universities. In the past decade, universities have added layers of administrators and staffers to their payrolls every year even while laying off full-time faculty in increasing numbers-ostensibly because of budget cuts. In a further irony, many of the newly minted-and non-academic-administrators are career managers who downplay the importance of teaching and research, as evidenced by their tireless advocacy for a banal "life skills" curriculum. Consequently, students are denied a more enriching educational experience-one defined by intellectual rigor. Ginsberg also reveals how the legitimate grievances of minority groups and liberal activists, which were traditionally championed by faculty members, have, in the hands of administrators, been reduced to chess pieces in a game of power politics. By embracing initiatives such as affirmative action, the administration gained favor with these groups and legitimized a thinly cloaked gambit to bolster their power over the faculty. As troubling as this trend has become, there are ways to reverse it. The Fall of the Faculty outlines how we can revamp the system so that real educators can regain their voice in curriculum policy.

Student Lives in Crisis - Deepening Inequality in Times of Austerity (Paperback): Lorenza Antonucci Student Lives in Crisis - Deepening Inequality in Times of Austerity (Paperback)
Lorenza Antonucci
R563 Discovery Miles 5 630 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

In the greatest social change of the last twenty years about half of Europe's young people now attend university. Their lived experiences are however largely undocumented. Antonucci travelled across six cities and three European countries - England, Italy and Sweden - to provide the first ever comparison of the lives of university students across countries and socio-economic backgrounds. Contrasting students' resources and backgrounds, this original work exposes the profound social effects of austerity and the financial crisis on young people. Questionnaires and first person interviews reveal that, in contrast with what assumed by HE policies, participating in university exacerbates inequalities among young people. This work is a wake-up call for re-thinking the role of higher education in relation to social justice in European societies.

The New Treason of the Intellectuals - Can the University Survive? (Hardcover): Thomas Docherty The New Treason of the Intellectuals - Can the University Survive? (Hardcover)
Thomas Docherty
R507 Discovery Miles 5 070 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

The university is under threat. For forty years this indispensable democratic institution has been systematically betrayed by governments and the political class, who have redirected it from its proper social and cultural functions through a relentless programme of financialisation. Taking his cue from Julien Benda's classic polemical essay of 1927, Thomas Docherty exposes the forces behind modern university 'reform'. He demonstrates that the sector has been politicised and now works explicitly to advance a market-fundamentalist ideology that drives an ever-widening wedge between ordinary citizens and the privileged and wealthy. Against this, the intellectual and the university have an urgent duty to extend democracy and social justice. Looking to the future, Docherty concludes the book with seven hypotheses towards a manifesto and calls on intellectuals everywhere to assist in the survival of the species. -- .

Leaving the Ivory Tower - The Causes and Consequences of Departure from Doctoral Study (Paperback): Barbara E. Lovitts Leaving the Ivory Tower - The Causes and Consequences of Departure from Doctoral Study (Paperback)
Barbara E. Lovitts
R1,164 Discovery Miles 11 640 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

Graduate schools have faced attrition rates of approximately 50 percent for the past 40 years. They have tried to address the problem by focusing on student characteristics and by assuming that if they could make better, more informed admissions decisions, attrition rates would drop. Yet high attrition rates persist and may in fact be increasing. Leaving the Ivory Tower thus turns the issue around and asks what is wrong with the structure and process of graduate education. Based on hard evidence drawn from a survey of 816 completers and noncompleters and on interviews with noncompleters, high- and low-Ph.D productive faculty, and directors of graduate study, this book locates the root cause of attrition in the social structure and cultural organization of graduate education.

The University of Hertfordshire - Sixty Years of Innovation (Paperback): Owen Davies The University of Hertfordshire - Sixty Years of Innovation (Paperback)
Owen Davies
R411 Discovery Miles 4 110 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

1952 saw the opening of a new Technical College in Hatfield, built on land donated by Alan S Butler, Chairman of the de Havilland Aircraft Company. With its roots in Britain's pioneering aeronautical industry, the College was soon established as an innovative force in education. Having been at the forefront of developing new subjects such as Computer Science, it evolved continually, being redesignated as Hatfield Polytechnic in 1969 and becoming the University of Hertfordshire in 1992. The institution has been forged over time out of its Hertfordshire-wide constituent colleges and campuses, which were variously founded to offer training and inspiration in teaching, medicine, the arts, business, science and the humanities. Now the University of Hertfordshire has become an internationally recognised leader in both research and teaching, exemplifying what a university can achieve through embracing a broad curriculum. This is the history of the University of Hertfordshire, relating the challenges and achievements of sixty years in further and higher education. At the same time, through its focus on a single institution, the book illustrates the importance of the post-1992 higher education sector in advancing the knowledge economy and cultural life of the country. The University has both been shaped by and has informed government policy as it has developed and it now takes its place in an international context as part of the global education system. Founded on principles of widening participation in higher education, in its sixtieth year the University celebrates the life-changing experience of education and its great cultural, social and economic value. Through the stories and memories of individual students and members of staff, the book also illuminates the experience of the hundreds of thousands of students who have graduated, and the contribution of academic and professional staff in making the College, Polytechnic and University a success. Over the decades there has been continuous growth and development - and, always, a vibrant culture of learning. Looking forward, the book explores how the University of Hertfordshire is drawing upon its heritage to shape its future.

Research and teaching constitute the core purposes of America's research universities. Significant challenges include effective institutional governance in a context of diffuse power centers; financial solvency; security; housing; risk management; and outsourcing other support and serviced functions. This book is intended to increase understanding while helping our treasured universities surmount the challenges ahead.

Dana G Perry
R4,497 Discovery Miles 44 970 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

The Black College and University Act defined a historically black college and university (HBCU) as one that existed before 1964 with a historic and contemporary mission of educating blacks while being open to all. An HBCU must either have earned accreditation from a nationally recognised accrediting agency or association or be making reasonable progress toward accreditation. The U.S. Commission on Civil Rights conducted a briefing on May 5, 2006, to assess the educational effectiveness of HBCUs. This book discusses HBCUs and examines why minority college students who begin their college studies intending to major in science, technology, engineering or math (STEM) leave these disciplines in disproportionate numbers before graduation.

The Effective Scientist - A Handy Guide to a Successful Academic Career (Hardcover): Corey J. A. Bradshaw The Effective Scientist - A Handy Guide to a Successful Academic Career (Hardcover)
Corey J. A. Bradshaw; Illustrated by Rene Campbell
R1,414 Discovery Miles 14 140 Ships in 7 - 11 work days

What is an effective scientist? One who is successful by quantifiable standards, with many publications, citations, and students supervised? Yes, but there is much more. Truly effective scientists need to have influence beyond academia, usefully applying and marketing their research to non-scientists. This book therefore takes an all-encompassing approach to improving the scientist's career. It begins by focusing on writing and publishing - a scientist's most important weapon in the academic arsenal. Part two covers the numerical and financial aspects of being an effective scientist, and Part three focuses on running a lab effectively. The book concludes by discussing the more entertaining and philosophical aspects of being an effective scientist. Little of this material is taught in university, but developing these skills is vital to maximize the chance of being effective. Written by a scientist for scientists, this practical and entertaining book is a must-read for every early career-scientist, regardless of specialty.

University Engagement and Environmental Sustainability (Paperback): Patricia Inman, Diana Robinson University Engagement and Environmental Sustainability (Paperback)
Patricia Inman, Diana Robinson
R485 Discovery Miles 4 850 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

Universities have a key role to play in contributing to environmental development and combating climate change. The chapters within this volume detail the challenges faced by higher education institutions in considering environmental sustainability, and provide both a broad view of university engagement and a detailed examination of various projects. As part of this series in association with the Place and Social Capital and Learning (PASCAL) International Observatory, the three key PASCAL themes of place management, lifelong learning and the development of social capital are considered throughout the book. While universities have historically generated knowledge outside of specific local contexts, this book argues that it is particularly important for them to engage with the local community and to consider diverse perspectives and assets when looking at issues within an ecological context. The chapters in this volume provide new perspectives and frames of reference for transforming universities by engaging in the development of resilient communities. -- .

To Restore American Democracy - Political Education and the Modern University (Paperback): Robert E. Calvert To Restore American Democracy - Political Education and the Modern University (Paperback)
Robert E. Calvert; Contributions by Benjamin R. Barber, Robert G. Bottoms, Jean Bethke Elshtain, William A. Galston, …
R934 Discovery Miles 9 340 Ships in 12 - 17 work days

At a time when democracy in America suffers from a profound sense of cynicism, lack of trust, and disengagement, especially among young adults, this book is a much needed antidote. Here are original essays by some of the most distinguished and insightful political thinkers of our time. No armchair observers, they have advised presidents, been public servants, testified before Congress, helped other countries draft constitutions, worked as journalists, and won teaching awards. They participate ardently in the polity and civil society they write about here. The main focus of the essays is what role universities might be able to play in reviving a sense of citizenship and civic responsibility in our society. They represent different perspectives and differing opinions, making this a rich stimulus for discussion and action. At stake is nothing less than the future strength of democracy in the United States.
