R144 Discovery Miles 1 440 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

1940, London, the Blitz. With the country’s morale at stake, Catrin, an untried screenwriter, and a makeshift cast and crew, work under fire to make a film to lift the nation’s flagging spirits; and inspire America to join the war. Partnered alongside fellow screenwriter, Buckley, the pair set off to make a film that will warm the hearts of the nation and capture the imagination of the American population.

Alongside Gemma Arterton and Sam Claflin, Bill Nighy stars as fading matinee idol Ambrose Hilliard, who reluctantly joins their production in a supporting role.

Based on Lissa Evans' novel, Their Finest Hour And A Half, this is a witty, romantic and moving portrayal of a young woman finding her way, and her voice, in the mayhem of war… and the movies!

R389 Discovery Miles 3 890 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

The Pacific is an epic 10-part miniseries that delivers a realistic portrait of WWII's Pacific Theatre as seen through the intertwined odysseys of three U.S. Marines - Robert Leckie, John Basilone and Eugene Sledge.

The extraordinary experiences of these men and their fellow Marines take them from the first clash with the Japanese in the haunted jungles of Guadalcanal, through the impenetrable rain forests of Cape Gloucester, across the blasted coral strongholds of Peleliu, up the black sand terraces of Iwo Jima, through the killing fields of Okinawa, to the triumphant, yet uneasy, return home after V-J Day.

The viewer will be immersed in combat through the intimate perspective of this diverse, relatable group of men pushed to the limit in battle both physically and psychologically against a relentless enemy unlike any encountered before.

Produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg.

Francis Ford Coppola's multi-million dollar war epic, accompanied by the 1991 documentary which chronicled its making, and the updated 2001 director's cut. In 'Apocalypse Now', US Captain Willard (Martin Sheen) is sent on a mission to assassinate Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando), a renegade American officer who has set up his own kingdom in the heart of the jungle at the height of the Vietnam war. Willard's journey begins with a devastating aerial assault on a small Vietnamese village, the attacking helicopters booming Wagner's 'Ride of the Valkyrie' out of their speakers, and becomes progressively more deranged as it moves up the river. 'Apocalype Now Redux' (2001) is a new cut of the Vietnam epic, with director Francis Ford Coppola adding 55 minutes of deleted scenes. 'Hearts of Darkness' (1991) chronicles the troubled making of Coppola's epic. Filming began in February 1976, but problems on location included illness, clashing egos (Brando turned up on set - to the tune of three million dollars a week - overweight and unwilling to learn his lines) and cast changes (Martin Sheen replaced original choice Harvey Keitel halfway through). By the time shooting was concluded, Coppola had gone $31 million over budget. Fortunately, his wife Eleanor was on hand to capture the chaos on film as a warning to aspiring directors everywhere.

A fictional story inspired by true events, Redacted is a unique cinematic experience that will force viewers to radically reconsider the filters through which we see and accept events in our world, the power of the mediated image and how presentation and composition influence our ideas and beliefs.

A profound meditation on the way information is packaged, distributed and received in an era with infinite channels of communication, Redacted utilizes a variety of created source material - video diaries, produced documentary, surveillance footage, online testimonials, news pieces - to comment on the extreme disconnect between the surface of an image and the reality of ideas and the truth, especially in times of strife.

R167 Discovery Miles 1 670 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Two war dramas directed by Clint Eastwood. 'Flags of Our Fathers' (2006) is based on the book by James Bradley and Ron Powers. In February 1945, even as victory in Europe was finally within reach, the war in the Pacific raged on. One of the most crucial and bloodiest battles of the war was the struggle for the island of Iwo Jima, which culminated with what would become one of the most iconic images in history: five Marines and a Navy corpsman raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi. But the surviving flag raisers had no interest in being held up as symbols and did not consider themselves heroes; they wanted only to stay on the front with their brothers in arms who were fighting and dying without fanfare or glory. 'Letters from Iwo Jima' (2006) is based on the book 'Picture Letters from Commander in Chief' by Tadamichi Kuribayashi. The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi (Ken Watanabe) is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favour the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester among his staff.

The true, dramatic story of Franz von Werra, the only German prisoner-of-war in Britain to escape and return to his homeland.

The Battle of Britain is at its height. Out of the vapour-traced sky a Messerschmitt spins and plunges onto British soil. Even though the pilot is captured, he is extremely confident and an official interrogation does not deter him from his one objective - to escape and return home against all the odds.

His bid for freedom takes him from England to Canada and into the still neutral United States - before making his way back to Germany.

The One That Got Away stars Hardy Kruger - a real-life prisoner of war, who escaped from the Americans on three occasions - as the cocky and charismatic von Werra.
