The Lord has certainly set his seal upon this effort, for, in the schools that have looked to us for help and that we have planted, there have been 2489 conversions; and 79 churches, with regular preaching, at 105 other places are the first fruits. The pressing of all forms of work on the frontier is a good thing, but it should not be forgotten that in the older states many churches are being abandoned. In some sections there are fewer churches than existed 25 years ago. In many of the rural settlements, a new civilization is coming in and possessing the land, and dispossessing the churches. It would be well for those who have to do with organizing churches to consider this fact, viz., that the country settlements of the West are being bought up by foreigners, and the American people are moving either to the towns or cities or farther west. It often looks like progress when the hasty organizing of churches is reported; whereas it is often true that these churches are born to soon die, and the houses of worship, built at a great sacrifice, are many of them to be abandoned in a little while. A town in Illinois of 500 people has 7 churches and one preacher. There was never need of more than one church-building and one minister. A town in Nebraska has a flourishing Union Sunday-school, of 50 scholars, reaching out to all the country round about, but the town has SO people, and two churches and two ministers, who alternate their preaching services.
