The right was granted to Paul; for when the Roman captain was informed that Paul was a Roman citizen, and not simply a Jew, he changed his mode of inquiry, did not allow him to be scourged, but required the Jewish council to present their charges face to face with Paul. A dissension among them was the result, and Paul was taken to the castle for safety. When the secret plot to assassinate him came to the ears of the captain, he provided a safe escort for Paul to Cssarea to the Roman governor, and ordered his accusers to plead their case before Felix himself. So they went down to Csesarea, taking a noted advocate or lawyer, Tertullus, with them to prosecute Paul. The lawyer began his accusation with flattering words to Felix, and then accused Paul of three crimes: (1) of stirring up insurrection; (2) of being a ringleader among the turbulent Nazarenes, and (3) of profaning the Jewish temple. Paul then makes his defence. He made two defences. One of his pleas is fully reported. Of the second plea, made several days after the first one, the effect only is recorded (vs. 24-27). SPECIAL WORD STUDIES. Beckoned. The Oriental does this quite the opposite way to ours. He turns his palm outward and downward, and bends his fingers upon the palm, and often his whole hand is bent downward at the wrist, like one pawing the air. The motion would begin with the hand flexed, and be a sudden upward movement in inviting one to speak. Heresy, or " sect" (R. V.). The Greek word designates any " party " or "school" of thought or teaching, and was used in both a good and a bad sense. God of my fathers. This was a classical phrase, common among the Romans also. It would dispose a Roman to hear Paul respectfully....
