Joe," I said, warming up at this impeachment of my manhood, "you
acknowledged to me the other day that if it was your case you
wouldn't know how to decide. True, you advised Laura as the best
woman for an honest lawyer's wife, but how do you know that either
of the other two wouldn't be just as good a wife for an honest
lawyer? Both are fine ladies, possessed of every quality that a
good man would desire in a good woman." "Nonsense, man " he
exclaimed, seriously, "if you have a mind of your own--if you have
power of judgment--you can, if you really know what love is, decide
this matter, and the sooner you do it the better. I know you well
enough to know that if you permit a matter of this kind to trouble
you, it will monopolize your best thoughts, and be a serious
obstacle in the way of your professional success, which, at your
time of life, is everything. Decide at once, and let that be the
end--that is, if you are sure the one of your choice loves you, and
