The treatment of disease in man by the administration of the normal or abnormal blood serum of other animals, whilst still a problem of great complexity from the purely scientific side, may be considered clinically as consisting of two questions--firstly, has the treatment the good results that are claimed for it? secondly, is it capable of doing harm? The first question I do not propose to discuss. In the case of diphtheria it is already decided by overwhelming evidence; in certain cases of septicaemia it has many times seemed to experienced observers that life has been saved by the use of serum.
