THE JUDICIARY THE SOUL OF A REPUBLIC "Government by the Courts" is a "bogey man" that is held up to the gaze of the public by those who are attempting to destroy our Government, but who, knowing the love of the American for a constitutional and representative form of government, dare not boldly attack the form itself but hope to attain the same end, a Socialistic order, by destroying the power of the judiciary. In this attempt to sovietize this country through the destruction of its courts, these enemies of law and order are unconsciously aided by many well-meaning but thoughtless persons and organizations, who indulge in foolish and destructive criticism and I feel that we, as attorneys and officers of the court, should at all times exert our greatest efforts in maintaining the courts at a high standing and vigorously countering all destructive criticism and unjust attacks. It is not infrequent that we hear someone, generally a rather knowing person, on a railroad train, holding forth on some claimed miscarriage of justice, sowing seeds of distrust of and dissatisfaction with the courts of the land. When such a person speaks in my presence I always ask him about the trial and what facts were actually developed, and I have yet to find one of these traveling orators who had actual knowledge of the case of which he spoke, and of the facts and the law applicable thereto. The foolish and destructive criticism, however, is not confined to the noisy man of the railroad train for the purveyor of this governmental poison ...
