CO-OPERATIVE HOUSEKEEPING. (A paper read before the Rhode Island

flANY theories have been advanced in the magazines in the last
twentyfive years, in regard to this fascinating topic of
co-operative housekeeping; but the writers generally so studiously
avoid all reference to actual experiments, as to lead one to
suspect that if any such experiments have been made, they have
failed. So after all, it has been necessary to limit this review of
the subject also to the theoretical side of the question, in spite
of the danger that you may have reason to say at the end--as was
said of an earlier paper by an Englishwoman--" Whatever was true
was not new, and whatever was new was not true." Mary A. Livermore
once said that if a man and a woman be given the same piece of work
to do, the man will immediately sit down to think of some easy way
to do it. And so, perhaps, it has been the less surprising to find
that in recent years, some of the most pertinent suggestions for
organized housekeeping have come from the men, though women
themselves stigmatize the present mode as "primitive" and are quick
to claim the economic advantages that would result from division of
