Made several years before ZORBA THE GREEK, back when Anthony Quinn was still a fine actor: in this blatant anti-boxing drama he portrays a simple, over the hill fighter who hasnt forgotten that he was once highly ranked on the heavyweight charts. Jackie Gleason is his mercenary manager; dynamic Mickey Rooney plays his sympathetic trainer, while Julie Harris is the social worker assigned to help him. Added bonuses are the shockingly dramatic pre-opening-credits sequence, and Laurence Rosenthals sarcastic musical score.
