In the wig-wag the positions of the flag should be governed by an easy flexible motion of the wrists and arms, using the arms from the shoulders down. The staff should be grasped by the right hand with the lower edge of the palm about three inches from the end of the staff, the left hand above the right and separated from it by about six inches. In making the characters the entire staff should be pivoted around the center of that portion of itself between the two hands and not around either hand. This pivotal portion of the staff should be held opposite a point about midway between the center of the chest and the waist. To prevent the tangling of the flag around the staff a small loop should be described at the completion of each downward stroke so that in going from one side to the other, as in the letter " a," a figure 8 is made. The loops of this figure should not be too much exaggerated but made just large enough to avoid catching the flag on the staff at the beginning of the upward stroke. In windy weather the loops will have to be made somewhat larger than during calmer periods, their size always being restricted to as narrow limits as practicable. Too large loops have the effect from a distance of foreshortening the appear ance of the length of the staff thus rendering the characters vague.
