Akthctk Hbney Ewing was born at Saltsburg, Indiana County, Pa., October 18th, 1864; received his College preparatory education at Saltsburg and Elder's Ridge Academies; graduated from Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pa., in 1887, and from the Western Theological Seminary, Allegheny City, Pa., in 1890; sailed for India as a missionary in connection with the Presbyterian Church in September, 1890; was stationed at Ludhiana, Punjab, where he remained eight years engaged in educational, literary, and general work; returned to America in February, 1899, and spent two years as a resident graduate student in Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Md. His principal subject, under the guidance of Professor Bloom- field, was Sanskrit. His subsidiary subjects were Philosophy and Arabic, under the guidance of Professors Griffin and Haupt. He returned to India in February, 1901, to be stationed at Allahabad with a view to special educational work.
