District No. 4--Wards 3, 4, 5 of Springfield--John F. Marsh, Republican, of Springfield, was born in Hudson, N H., Feb. 1, 1828, of the seventh generation from George Marsh, who camt from England with his family in 1635 and settled in Hingham; educated in public and private schools. In 1847, served under Gen Scott in Mexican War, in 9th U. S. Inft., in battles of Contreras and Cherebuhco Aug 19, 20, Molino del Key Sept. 8, Chapultepec, the Garitas and City of Mexico iept. 12, 13, 14 respectively. In Jan., 1849, organized a company at Galveston, Texas, being captain, and, crossing northern Mexico, camped in California in June. In 1855-6, special agent of P. O department from New York to San Francisco; postmaster four years at Hastings, Minn., and mayor of that city. June 17, 1861, appointed 1st lieut. Co, B, 6th Wis Vols., Army of Potomac; promoted to captain in Oct.; wounded in knee at second Bull Run, Aug. 28, 1862; appointed lieut. col. I2th N. H. Vols Sept. I1, 1862; severely wounded in hip at Chancellorsville, May 3, 1863. In last year of war on Gen. Casty's board for examination of candidates for commissions in military service, and by order of Secretary Stanton on special service, inspecting prisons where Confederate prisoners of war vvere confined. April 20, 1865, commissioned col. of 24th U. S. Colored Inft, but declined; brev. col. March 13, 1865, for "Gal'ant and meritorious service at the battle of Chancellorsville, Va."
