This book explores the ways in which university presses were
adjusting in the 1990s to such changes as reduced funding, falling
monograph sales, the opening of the mid list niches in trade
publishing, and changing computer and telecommunications
technology. The empirical research attempts to determine the
relationship between resources and the changing strategies
initiated to deal with a changing environment. The questions
regarding why particular strategy decisions for survival were made
and being made by the individual university press directors are
approached from the resource-based view of the firm. This approach,
a part of the model of competitive advantage and found in the
strategic management literature, considers both the unique tangible
and intangible resources of each press, such as financial support,
physical facilities and equipment, back list of titles, reputation
of the university and its press, and knowledge of the director and
staff. The study tests the thesis that university publishers that
are richer in resources will be more likely than university
publishers that are poorer in resources to de-emphasize or depart
from their traditional strategies when confronted by environmental
change.
