At last they came to terms, agreeing that he should neither go out into the street nor remain within the house, but await his master in the garden. As he descended the few steps of the hall door he said in a loud voice--"Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly." CHAPTER XVIII. PASSION, SACRIFICE, DEATH. "Go and lie down," said Dona Serafinita, when they found themselves alone in the niece's bedroom, after Don Buenaventura had gone, and Francisca had retired at the aunt's bidding. "You are fatigued." "Yes, very," said Gloria, languidly, with her head resting on the palm of her hand and her elbow on the couch. "Lie down," repeated Dona Serafinita, divesting her niece of her shawl. "Come, I will undress you." "I have no strength to do anything," said Gloria, dropping her arms after raising herself a little. "Please call Francisca, I feel so exhausted." "I am here," said Serafinita, unbuttoning Gloria's bodice. "No, aunt, no; I will do it," said the young lady, rising. Then Dona Serafinita knelt down to help her off with her shoes. "No... aunt, for heaven's sake " exclaimed Gloria, repelling the service with a blush. ..".
